Metro Redux is a collective release of two games from the Metro series. Metro 2033 was released in 2010 as an adaptation of the book by Dmitry Głuchowski of the same title and the debut of the Ukrainian studio 4A Games. Metro: Last Light was released three years later and continued the story of its predecessor. Both productions have been refreshed for the eighth generation consoles.
The action of the Metro series takes place in the world after a nuclear disaster that wiped out humanity from the face of the Earth. Only those who managed to hide in underground shelters, as well as in the tunnels of the Moscow metro, survived. The main character of the series is young Artem, who lives in one of the small settlements. Although the inhabitants have plenty of water and food, they have to face the attacks of mutant monsters. Recently, the attacks of these beasts have intensified, significantly thinning the ranks of the defenders. When Artyom's father's friend does not return from another trip, the young man sets out to warn other subway residents and find a way to save his home. We get to know the story of his travels in Metro 2033.
Both productions included in Metro Redux are first-person action games in which shooting is intertwined with stealth. Most of the time, we walk the corridors of the Moscow metro, occasionally interrupted by slightly more open locations. The fun usually comes down to dealing with enemies, be they humans or mutated beasts. However, the whole thing has been sprinkled with elements of survival horror: the levels often build the mood of horror, and resources and ammunition are very rare. Artyom is also not immortal and the charge against groups of armed wicked or more powerful beasts will most likely end in his death. Fortunately, the game often allows you to sneak behind enemies' backs and silently eliminate human opponents. As a result, some levels can be completed in several different ways. Compared to the original releases, the creators have significantly modified both productions. Multiple levels have been combined or enlarged, resulting in wider and more open locations. Shooting has also been improved and a handful of trinkets like reloading. Major changes affected Metro 2033. The title was completely rebuilt on the Metro: Last Light engine, thanks to which both productions operate on the basis of identical gameplay mechanisms.
