Networks of Influence and Power Business Culture and Identity in Liverpool's Merchant Community c.1800 to 1914 During the nineteenth century Liverpool became the heart of an international maritime network. As the 'second city' of Empire its merchants and shipowners operated within a transnational commercial and financial system while its trading connections stimulated the development of new markets and their integration within an increasingly global economy. This ground-breaking volume brings together ten original contributions that reflect upon the development of the city's business community from the early-nineteenth century to the outbreak of the First World War with an emphasis on the period from 1851 to 1912. It offers the first detailed analysis of Liverpool's merchant community within a conceptual and historiographical framework which focuses on the economic social and cultural role of business elites in the nineteenth century. It explores the extent to which business success was predicated on the maintenance of networks of trust; analyses the importance of business culture in structuring commercial operations; and discusses the role of ethics trust and reputation within the changing framework of the business environment. Particular attention is paid to the role of women and the important contribution of the family to commercial success and the maintenance of social networks. Changes in business practice and social networks are also examined within a spatial context in order to assess the impact of the development of a distinct commercial centre and the clustering of commercial activity on interaction reputation and trust while particular attention is paid to the effect of suburbanization on existing associational networks the social cohesiveness of business culture and the cultural identity of the merchant community as a whole. | Networks of Influence and Power Business Culture and Identity in Liverpool's Merchant Community c. 1800 to 1914 GBP 205.00 1

Vibrations and Waves The M. I. T. Introductory Physics Series is the result of a program of careful study planning and development that began in 1960. The Education Research Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (formerly the Science Teaching Center) was established to study the process of instruction aids thereto and the learning process itself with special reference to science teaching at the university level. Generous support from a number of foundations provided the means for assembling and maintaining an experienced staff to co-operate with members of the Institute's Physics Department in the examination improvement and development of physics curriculum materials for students planning careers in the sciences. After careful analysis of objectives and the problems involved preliminary versions of textbooks were prepared tested through classroom use at M. I. The Routledge Handbook of Second Language Acquisition and Individual Differences The Routledge Handbook of Second Language Acquisition and Individual Differences provides a thorough in-depth discussion of the theory research and pedagogy pertaining to the role individual difference (ID) factors play in second language acquisition (SLA). It goes beyond the traditional repertoire and includes 32 chapters covering a full spectrum of topics on learners’ cognitive conative affective and demographic/sociocultural variation. The volume examines IDs from two perspectives: one is how each ID variable is associated with learning behaviors processes and outcomes; the other is how each domain of SLA such as vocabulary or reading is affected by clusters of ID variables. The volume also includes a section on the common methods used in ID research including data elicitation instruments such as surveys interviews and psychometric testing as well as methods of data analysis such as structural equation modeling. The book is a must-read for any second language researcher or applied linguist interested in investigating the effects of IDs on language learning and for any educator interested in taking account of learners’ individual differences to maximize the effects of second language instruction. The Reflective Practitioner How Professionals Think in Action A leading M. I. T. social scientist and consultant examines five professions - engineering architecture management psychotherapy and town planning - to show how professionals really go about solving problems. The best professionals Donald Schön maintains know more than they can put into words. To meet the challenges of their work they rely less on formulas learned in graduate school than on the kind of improvisation learned in practice. This unarticulated largely unexamined process is the subject of Schön's provocatively original book an effort to show precisely how 'reflection-in-action' works and how this vital creativity might be fostered in future professionals. | The Reflective Practitioner How Professionals Think in Action GBP 180.00 1

Effects Conservation Tillage On Ground Water Quality Nitrates and Pesticides Nowadays the environmental sustainability of the cropping systems is increasingly requested by the consumers. Conventional tillage practices totally turning over the soil between the vineyard rows may cause erosion due to rain as well as structure destruction of the soil in the long term. Conservation tillage is a soil management technique poorly widespread in Sardinia allowing cover cropping between vineyard rows. Furthermore this technique makes the canopy development control of herbage possible by cutting it up during specific phenological phases. Conservation tillage usually involves direct benefits to farmers such as increasing soil fertility as well as reductionof tillage costs soil erosion and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the atmosphere. This long term trial during at least five years aims to assess the conservation tillage impact on chemical-physical soil characteristics in comparison with traditional tillage by evaluating the change of organic matter C. E. C. and availability of major plant nutrients in the soil and to estimate their probable rise. The field plots are located in a 35% slope condition vineyard showing massive erosion problem and organic matter low content. A split/plot design with four replications was set up with the comparison between conservation and traditional tillage apart as main plots. Moreover the effects of two different irrigation levels were evaluated in the subplots of each main plot. At the beginning of the trial (2011) a pedological survey was made. Three soil profiles were described and sampled along the field slope and soil sampling in each plot were made both to characterize the soil and to find the zero point. The soil chemical and physical characteristics were monitored through a second soil sampling made at the end of 2013. Conservation tillage caused increasing organic matter content and C. E. C. values. As for major plant nutrients in soil results were more uncertain. Grapevine yield and quality parameters did not show any negative effect when passing from conventional to conservation tillage techniques. The trial provided a preliminary positive evaluation of conservation tillage. However more years are required to confirm this trend. | Effects Conservation Tillage On Ground Water Quality Nitrates and Pesticides GBP 180.00 1

The Invisible Sex Uncovering the True Roles of Women in Prehistory Shaped by cartoons and museum dioramas our vision of Paleolithic times tends to feature fur-clad male hunters fearlessly attacking mammoths while timid women hover fearfully behind a boulder. Recent archaeological research has shown that this vision bears little relation to reality. J. M. Adovasio and Olga Soffer two of the world's leading experts on perishable artifacts such as basketry cordage and weaving present an exciting new look at prehistory. With science writer Jake Page they argue that women invented all kinds of critical materials including the clothing necessary for life in colder climates the ropes used to make rafts that enabled long-distance travel by water and nets used for communal hunting. Even more important women played a central role in the development of language and social life in short in our becoming human. In this eye-opening book a new story about women in prehistory emerges with provocative implications for our assumptions about gender today. | The Invisible Sex Uncovering the True Roles of Women in Prehistory GBP 180.00 1
