Social Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprises Nordic Perspectives Migrant women stepping into ethnic catering; homeless men employed to take care of bees producing honey for sale; young people on the edge getting microcredit funding to start social businesses; or former criminals joining forces to create social and economic structures for an honest lifestyle. These initiatives capture the transformative power of social enterprise and might indicate how social enterprises have the potential to make a difference for people and societies. The Nordic countries represent an interesting case. Social enterprises and co-operatives played a significant part in paving the way for the Nordic solicaristic welfare state. As the welfare state grew civil society organizations and co-operatives lost ground to a certain extent. But in recent decades the welfare state has been restructured and simultaneously the concepts social entrepreneurship and social enterprises have gained attention. The Nordic context with extensive public welfare structures and a high degree of citizens’ participation in public affairs might affect the emergence of social entrepreneurship and social enterprises. | Social Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprises Nordic Perspectives GBP 42.99 1

The Nordic Economic Social and Political Model Challenges in the 21st Century The Nordic Model is the 20th-century Scandinavian recipe for combining stable democracies individual freedom economic growth and comprehensive systems for social security. But what happens when Sweden and Finland – two countries topping global indexes for competitiveness productivity growth quality of life prosperity and equality – start doubting themselves and their future? Is the Nordic Model at a crossroads? Historically consensus continuity social cohesion and broad social trust have been hailed as key components for the success and for the self-images of Sweden and Finland. In the contemporary however political debates in both countries are increasingly focused on risks threats and worry. Social disintegration political polarization geopolitical anxieties and threat of terrorism are often dominant themes. This book focuses on what appears to be a paradox: countries with low income differences high faith in social institutions and relatively high cultural homogeneity becoming fixated on the fear of polarization disintegration and diminished social trust. Unpacking the presentist discourse of worry and a sense of interregnum at the face of geopolitical tensions digitalization and globalization as well as challenges to democracy the chapters take steps back in time and explore the current conjecture through the eyes of historians and social scientists addressing key aspects of and challenges to both the contemporary and future Nordic Model. In addition the functioning and efficacy of the participatory democracy and current protocols of decision-making are debated. Color that Matters A Comparative Approach to Mixed Race Identity and Nordic Exceptionalism This book examines the ways in which mixed ethnic identities in Scandinavia are formed along both cultural and embodied lines arguing that while the official discourses in the region refer to a post-racial or color blind era color still matters in the lives of people of mixed ethnic descent. Drawing on research from people of mixed ethnic backgrounds the author offers insights into how color matters and is made to matter and into the ways in which terms such as ethnic and ethnicity remain very much indebted to their older racialized grammar. Color that Matters moves beyond the conventional Anglo-American focus of scholarship in this field showing that while similarities exist between the racial and ethnic discourses of the US and UK and those found in the Nordic region Scandinavia and Norway in particular manifests important differences in part owing to a tendency to view itself as exceptional or outside the colonial heritage of race and imperialism. Presenting both a contextualization of racial discourses since World War II based on documentary analysis and new interview material with people of mixed ethnic backgrounds the book acts as a corrective to the blind spot within Scandinavian research on ethnic minorities offering a new reading of race for the Nordic region that engages with the idea that color has been emptied of legitimate cultural content. | Color that Matters A Comparative Approach to Mixed Race Identity and Nordic Exceptionalism GBP 38.99 1
Bringing the People Back In State Building from Below in the Nordic Countries ca. 1500-1800 The formation of states in early modern Europe has long been an important topic for historical analysis. Traditionally the political and military struggles of kings and rulers were the favoured object of study for academic historians. This book highlights new historical research from Europe’s northern frontier bringing ‘the people’ back into the discussion of state politics presenting alternative views of political and social relations in the Nordic countries before industrialisation. The early modern period was a time that witnessed initiatives from people from many groups formally excluded from political influence operating outside the structures of central government and this book returns to the subject of contentious politics and state building from below. | Bringing the People Back In State Building from Below in the Nordic Countries ca. 1500-1800 GBP 36.99 1

Nordic Latin Manuscript Fragments The Destruction and Reconstruction of Medieval Books Much of what is known about the past often rests upon the chance survival of objects and texts. Nowhere is this better illustrated than in the fragments of medieval manuscripts re-used as bookbindings in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Such fragments provide a tantalizing yet often problematic glimpse into the manuscript culture of the Middle Ages. Exploring the opportunities and difficulties such documents provide this volume concentrates on the c. 50 000 fragments of medieval Latin manuscripts stored in archives across the five Nordic countries of Denmark Finland Iceland Norway and Sweden. This large collection of fragments (mostly from liturgical works) provides rich evidence about European Latin book culture both in general and in specific relation to the far north of Europe one of the last areas of Europe to be converted to Christianity. As the essays in this volume reveal individual and groups of fragments can play a key role in increasing and advancing knowledge about the acquisition and production of medieval books and in helping to distinguish locally made books from imported ones. Taking an imaginative approach to the source material the volume goes beyond a strictly medieval context to integrate early modern perspectives that help illuminate the pattern of survival and loss of Latin manuscripts through post-Reformation practices concerning reuse of parchment. In so doing it demonstrates how the use of what might at first appear to be unpromising source material can offer unexpected and rewarding insights into diverse areas of European history and the history of the medieval book. | Nordic Latin Manuscript Fragments The Destruction and Reconstruction of Medieval Books GBP 39.99 1

Military Strategy of Small States Responding to External Shocks of the 21st Century The book explores how small states adjust their military strategies in response to external shocks. Using primary sources from four Nordic countries (Denmark Finland Norway and Sweden) this volume explores how small states have adjusted their military strategies in response to external shocks of the 21st century. The 9/11 terrorist attacks the Russian interventions in Georgia and Ukraine and the rise of the Islamic State have all forced the Nordic states to adopt new strategies. While the responses have not been uniform their differing relations to the EU and NATO have not prevented these countries from behaving similarly in military affairs. Limitations in military capacity has led all four countries to pursue strategies that include cooperation with more resourceful partners. It is necessary for them to cooperate with others to protect and promote their national interests. Moreover the Nordic cosmopolitan outlook expresses milieu-shaping ambitions that we generally would not expect small states to pursue against a potential great power aggressor. Economies that Mimic Life From Biomimicry to Sustainable Prosperity The world economy today is at an historical inflection point. The neoclassical (industrial) model of economics is self-destructing while a new life-mimicking model based on radically different assumptions is emerging. Although rarely acknowledged in economic journals Nordic countries which pioneered the life-mimicking model have become world leaders in prosperity and productivity while those operating on the older neoclassical/industrial model are trapped in downward spirals. By approaching economies as sub-systems of life rather than super-systems that transcend life we gain transformative insights. Such thinking led to the first circular economy experiments in Kalundborg (Denmark) during the 1970s then quickly spread to the rest of the Nordic world. By placing a higher value on living assets (people and Nature) than on non-living capital assets this approach generates harmony rather than exploitation and conflict. Because Nordic people feel vested in the system and responsible for its success they are extraordinarily innovative and productive. That is why Nordic companies are regularly rated among the world’s most sustainable and profitable in their fields – even though their region holds less than half of one percent of the world’s population. Written in an accessible way for non-economists the book is ideal for readers interested in the benefits of biomimicry and methods of guiding democratic countries along a proven path of self-renewal. Economies That Mimic Life will also provide useful background for corporate leaders in scenario planning and strategic thinking. Knowing which way the political-economic wind is blowing will become increasingly important to corporate survival. | Economies that Mimic Life From Biomimicry to Sustainable Prosperity GBP 34.99 1
The Aesthetics and Politics of Linguistic Borders Multilingualism in Northern European Literature This collection showcases a multivalent approach to the study of literary multilingualism embodied in contemporary Nordic literature.
