This world premiere recording of the Weihnachtsoratorium by Reinhard Keiser makes available one of the few surviving sacred works by a musician who was highly regarded by his contemporaries, primarily as a composer of operas. Well-known Christmas chorales, opulently scored, with rich polyphony, are joined by movements which depict with great delicacy the secene around the crib at Bethlehem. This CD includes, also recorded for the first time, the Magnificat by Christoph Graupner, written in 1772 to support his application for the post of Thomaskantor in Leipzig.

The first two carols of the set are Bennett’s own creations, a study in contrasts. The first is a classic carol in common time with syncopation and a divisi Chorus. The second is the engaging African Crib Carol in 3+3+2/8 time again with divisi Chorus. The third is a lilting arrangement of a traditional Somerset carol. Separately or as a suite, these three carols make a fine addition to seasonal school programming.F Roy Bennett was a respected music educator and author of the 20th century who wrote many books of music theory and history that are highly prized by primary and secondary school music teachers. Christmas Carol : from Christmas Sequence, op. 95

This carol was commissioned in 2002 by King’s College, Cambridge for their famous service of Nine Lessons and Carols. It tells the start of the familiar Christmas story: Gabriel's Annunciation; praise to the Virgin beforeshe too sings 'my soul doth magnify the Lord'; the shepherds a-watching their flocks by night; the angelic chorus in the sky; the fusion of celestial and earthy around the crib holding the baby who is also 'Lord of Time &Space'.   The text is from a variety of sources: anonymous carols of the 15th,16th & 17th centuries, Edmund Bolton (1611, 'Sweet music, sweeter far...'), the Gloria from the Mass, and a couple of linesfromwell-loved Anglican hymns.   Selected for the Royal Philharmonic Society’s ‘Encore’ project, this carol will offer some challenge to intermediate choirs, but will add some originality to acarol service or Christmas concert.

Composed for the Eucharist of Christmas Night 2004, at the Cathedral Church of Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary, Rochester, in the year of the 1400th anniversary of the cathedral's foundation.Missa Carolae was commissioned for Rochester Cathedral, and first performed there on 24 December 2004 by the Rochester Cathedral Choirs directed by Roger Sayer.Missa Carolæ was written for the 1400th anniversary of Rochester Cathedral, the second oldest cathedral in England. Performances there begin with a ceremonial procession that follows the movement of a boy chorister, accompanied by pipe and drum, from the High Altar to a large crib placed in the Nave, gathering the choirs (singing from different parts of the cathedral) and principal clergy in the course of the procession. The work, though not literally for dancing, is intended to invoke a dance-like spirit, which is true to the origin of the carol as a simple dance form. The choir parts should be very well known, so that the singers can sing with the whole of their bodies and not just their voices. It is suitable for liturgical or concert use.
