Requiem Op. 148 : Arrangement for Chamber Orchestra

These words were written by Robert Schumann in January 1851 – even though, up to that point in time, his compositional output had been almost entirely secular. The following year, however, he composed his Missa sacra, op. 147, and the Requiem, op. 148. In these works he sought new forms of expression for the liturgical texts, to which end he repeatedly deviated from the precise wording of the originals. Both in terms of the text and the overall musical conception, his Requiem is certainly suitable for concert performances alongside its traditional use in church.

Per Nørgård: String Quartet No.6 'Tintinnabulary' - Score

Programme note The spectrum of sound, the gesticulation – in short, the very nature of the strings – has always had a central place in my output, demonstrated by the numbers of string quartets, concertos with string soloist, chamber and solo works. The interest dates back to my school years, when I was fortunate to be able to compose for a cello-playing schoolmate and to accompany him on the piano. I discovered then the innumerable nuances of sound and playing varieties offered by just one bow, four strings and five fingers.. The bell-like association if the title reflects the special texture of the work. Like the continously changing overtones of a struck, resonating bell the four parts are unified through one single basic line, broken up in a multitude of changing dynamics, of a multifacetted rhythm and resulting in an ever transforming harmony. Charles Gounod: Roméo Et Juliette - 2013 Edition (Vocal Score)

A lifelong resident of Paris, Gounod can hold a claim to being the most important figure in late 19th century French music on account of his influence on later composers. Studying at the Paris Conservatoire, Gounod left in 1839 to travel through Europe, initially to Rome but then on through Austria and Germany. He was profoundly struck by the music he heard at the Sistine Chapel and by the German musical tradition, and upon his return was uniquely cosmopolitan in his influences among Parisian musical society. His early works consisted largely of liturgical settings that earned him some praise, but his work in the area in which he is most remembered, namely opera, took time to be recognised. His first two operas, Sapho (1851) and La Nonne sanglante (1854), drawing heavily on Gluck and Meyerbeer respectively, did not attract great attention. However, his subsequent works, including seven staged operas between 1855 and 1865, were increasingly well-received, none more so than his masterpiece Faust (1859). Two further successes, Mireille (1864) and Roméo et Juliette (1867) were premiered at the Théâtre Lyrique and inspired by the voice of Marie Miolan-Carvalho, the singer who had created Marguerite in Faust. Roméo et Juliette, with a libretto faithful to Shakespeare, by Barbier and Carré, who had provided texts for some of Gounod’s earlier works, is inescapably full of love music, but is by turns as wistful and cheerful as any in Gounod’s operatic output. Based upon the 1876 published version of the opera, the edition includes: • Original version of N° 1 Introduction, including Si mon coeur encore sommeille • Ariette N° 3 (Je veux vivre) in both F and G majors. • Three possible endings for Act 1, including Il nous échappe! • Cavatine N° 7 (L’amour! Duke Ellington: The Duke Box 2

The Duke Box 2 picks up the story of the great Duke Ellington band in the early 1950s and spans the next twenty years or so of a remarkable output. This collection is to some extent shaped by the advent of the LP and the longer tracks it enabled and encouraged. That technological shift came in a period when Ellington would lose the three of his stellar sidemen: Johnny Hodges, Lawrence Brown and Sonny Greer. As it turned out, their replacements (Willie Smith, Britt Woodman and Louie Bellson) and other new blood only served to re-energise the band as it approached the 25th anniversary of its initial engagement at The Cotton Club. The box set includes a high-quality 27-page booklet including a large selection of never before seen photos of The Duke and his band members in their prime time. Spanning the years in which Ellington regularly toured Europe and Scandinavia, The Duke Box 2 offers a rich selection of performances illustrating a tirelessly inventive musical spirit on tour with changing personnel and occasional guest artists. CD3 features never before released live recordings from a 1963 concert in Gröna Lund, Stockholm—a veritable treasure for the committed Ellington fan. The box also includes the well-renowned Jaywalker (CD5) and Piano Player (CD4) albums whose music always deserves a re-visiting. Among other gems are late 1970s recordings from New York, some of the last music Ellington ever put out. The bonus DVD combines a series of short films of the Ellington band in action and despite the sound being recorded first and the performances showing the band miming, this curiosum offers a fascinating glimpse of The Duke in action, and the audio is of course technically excellent. The achievement of Duke Ellington exists on a variety of levels. The closer you examine it, the more complex and multi-faceted it appears to be. The first great composer of jazz, the most popular African-American bandleader, the influential pianist, who made light of his piano contribution, the magician who assisted the musical formation of several key individual contributors but who nevertheless retained the identity of his band over a 50-year period. As a portrait of a sublime and inexhaustible musician thriving in the second half of a long and distinguished career, The Duke Box 2 is surely a must-have collection for all true admirers of the inimitable Duke Ellington !
