Doctor Jazz Volume 5 features Eddie Condon’s Band with the legendary cornetist Wild Bill Davison . Dating from between 1950 and 1952, the Doctor Jazz series was a weekly 30 minute radio show, presenting some of the finest Dixieland Jazz of the time, live from New York City. This CD contains some of the very best soundtracks, drawn from eight different shows and edited together in the superlative manner we expect from Storyville Records. Eddie Condon (1905-1973) was a guitarist and bandleader. Originally from Chicago, he moved to New York in 1929 and eventually started the nightclub that bore his name. He famously never took solos himself, letting the rest of his band take the limelight, but nonetheless provided much of the creative impetus behind their music.

Henry Cowell: Ancient Desert Drone (Arr. James Worman)

Ancient Desert Drone was composed for Orchestra in 1940 at the request of Percy Grainger, who encouraged the idea of using a single pitch drone throughout the work (similar to Grainger's own The Immovable Do ), and to whom the piece is dedicated. While the work suggests an Eastern charm with its distinctive mode and primitive rhythms, Cowell himself stated there was no particular programmatic intent. House Of Winter is a setting of four Christmas poems by George Mackay Brown, for AATBBB or SATBBB a cappella choir. The music is continuous, and though scored for unaccompanied voices, it becomes almost orchestra in its evocation of the calm, frozen stillness of an Orkney winter on the one hand, and the wildness of a December storm on the other.The setting is largely homphonic, in Davies?s 'adult' modal style and with a characteristic inventiveness of vocal scoring, as in the storm sequence, with its whistling upper voices and eruptive bass line.The first performance took place during the tenth St. Magnus Festival as part of a concert given by The King's Singers in Kirkwall in June 1986.Vocal score with piano accompaniment for rehearsal purposes.

American composer Philip Glass is widely known as one of the most celebrated, influential and prolific of the modern composers. He is frequently referred to as a minimalist, though he prefers to call himself a composer of ‘music with repetitive structures.’ His operas, among them the renowned Einstein On The Beach, are performed across the globe, and he has created work for small and large ensembles, film and experimental theatre, and founded his own performing group, The Philip Glass Ensemble. The Fall of the House of Usher was given its premiere in 1988.Writer and director Arthur Yorinks has worked in opera, theatre, dance, film and radio as well as writing thirty-five books for children. His goal is to create a new theatre of sound for the 21st century. Yorinks also collaborated with Glass on his opera The Juniper Tree. Both works have been performed internationally.
