The Illusion of Conscious Will - Daniel M. Wegner - Bog - MIT Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The Illusion of Conscious Will - Daniel M. Wegner - Bog - MIT Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

A new edition of Wegner''s classic and controversial work, arguing that conscious will simply reminds of us the authorship of our actions. Do we consciously cause our actions, or do they happen to us? Philosophers, psychologists, neuroscientists, theologians, and lawyers have long debated the existence of free will versus determinism. With the publication of The Illusion of Conscious Will in 2002, Daniel Wegner proposed an innovative and provocative answer: the feeling of conscious will is created by the mind and brain; it helps us to appreciate and remember our authorship of the things our minds and bodies do. Yes, we feel that we consciously will our actions, Wegner says, but at the same time, our actions happen to us. Although conscious will is an illusion (“the most compelling illusion”), it serves as a guide to understanding ourselves and to developing a sense of responsibility and morality. Wegner was unable to undertake a second edition of the book before his death in 2013; this new edition adds a foreword by Wegner''s friend, the prominent psychologist Daniel Gilbert, and an introduction by Wegner''s colleague Thalia Wheatley. Approaching conscious will as a topic of psychological study, Wegner examines cases both when people feel that they are willing an act that they are not doing and when they are not willing an act that they in fact are doing in such phenomena as hypnosis, Ouija board spelling, and dissociative identity disorder. Wegner''s argument was immediately controversial (called “unwarranted impertinence” by one scholar) but also compelling. Engagingly written, with wit and clarity, The Illusion of Conscious Will was, as Daniel Gilbert writes in the foreword to this edition, Wegner''s “magnum opus.”

Life between Two Deaths, 1989-2001 - Philip E. Wegner - Bog - Duke University Press - Plusbog.dk

Through virtuoso readings of significant works of American film, television, and fiction, Phillip E. Wegner demonstrates that the period between the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 fostered a unique consciousness and represented a moment of immense historical possibilities now at risk of being forgotten in the midst of the “war on terror.” Wegner argues that 9/11 should be understood as a form of what Jacques Lacan called the “second death,” an event that repeats an earlier “fall,” in this instance the collapse of the Berlin Wall. By describing 9/11 as a repetition, Wegner does not deny its significance. Rather, he argues that it was only with the fall of the towers that the symbolic universe of the Cold War was finally destroyed and a true “new world order,” in which the United States assumed disturbing new powers, was put into place. Wegner shows how phenomena including the debate on globalization, neoliberal notions of the end of history, the explosive growth of the Internet, the efflorescence of new architectural and urban planning projects, developments in literary and cultural production, new turns in theory and philosophy, and the rapid growth of the antiglobalization movement came to characterize the long nineties. He offers readings of some of the most interesting cultural texts of the era: Don DeLillo’s White Noise ; Joe Haldeman’s Forever trilogy; Octavia Butler’s Parable novels; the Terminator films; the movies Fight Club , Independence Day , Cape Fear , and Ghost Dog ; and the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer . In so doing, he illuminates fundamental issues concerning narrative, such as how beginnings and endings are recognized and how relationships between events are constructed.

Chattel or Person? - Judith Romney Wegner - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Chattel or Person? - Judith Romney Wegner - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Mishnah is a book of legal rules produced by Jewish sages in second-century Palestine and is to a great extent still binding upon Orthodox Jews. In this pioneering work, Judith Wegner scrutinizes the mishnaic laws governing women, in an attempt to determine the image and status of women in the patriarchy the Mishnah portrays. She focuses on a specific question: did the Mishnah''s creators regard women as persons, entities possessing legal rights, powers, and duties, or mere chattels, the property of some person or other?Considering a wide range of issues including women''s ability to give legal testimony and enter into religious vows, the penalties for rape and seduction and the rules pertaining to betrothal, marriage, and divorce, Wegner discovers a curious paradox. In some circumstances the Mishnah clearly regards women as full legal persons, with the same rights and responsibilities as the adult Israelite male. At other times, however, the system treats women as virtual chattels of the men who control their lives.Through close analysis of individual cases, Wegner isolates the factors that generate differences in the treatment of women. She finds that these differences hinge on whether a woman is legally independent, or subject to some man''s jurisdiction. The crucial point, she demonstrates, is the locus of ownership of the woman''s sexual and reproductive function. Whoever owns a woman''s sexuality exercises a degree of control over that function - and hence over the woman in question - that greatly resembles an owner''s control of a chattel. For this reason the personhood of minor daughters, wives, and certain widows is circumscribed, whereas "emancipated" women such as adult daughters, divorcees, and most widows are virtually autonomous.Going beyond any previous study of the status of women in Jewish law, Chattel or Person? sheds new light on the almost indelible marks left by archaic socio-legal systems on attitudes toward women in modern western cultures. By enlarging our understanding of women in antiquity, it serves not only to illuminate the workings of one particular ancient system, but also to highlight some of the problems facing feminism in our time.
