Heartland Serial Killers - Richard Lindberg - Bog - Cornell University Press - Plusbog.dk

Lindberg, an accomplished local historian and true crime writer, presents a fascinating story of two contemporaneous serial killers, both weaving marriage and murder in and around Chicago during the 1890s and 1900s. Johann Hoch was a debonair bigamist and wife killer who boasted of having perfected a "scientific technique" to romance and seduction. Belle Gunness was a nesting "Black Widow" whose sprawling farm in Northwest Indiana was a fatal lure for lonely bachelors seeking the comforts of middle-age security by answering matrimonial advertisements placed by Gunness. Notorious in his own day, Hoch had faded into the dark background of Chicago crime history. But, in Heartland Serial Killers , Lindberg brings back vividly the horrors of one of Chicago''s first celebrity criminals and uncovers new evidence of a close connection between Hoch and H.H. Holmes, the "Devil in the White City." Unlike Hoch, Belle Gunness, likely the most prolific and infamous female serial killer of the twentiethe century, has remained fascinating to the public. Here, Lindberg presents the most comprehensive and compelling study of the Gunness case to date, including new information regarding ongoing DNA testing of remains found at the site of Gunness'' farm in LaPorte, Indiana, which may serve to resolve once and for all the mystery surrounding Gunness'' death. Told in alternating chapters and rapidly paced, this book is true crime at its best—gripping, pulpy, and full of sharp historical tidbits. True crime fans, history buffs, and those interested in local lore will delight in this chilling tale of two ruthless killers.

The Graceful Exit - Mary C. Lindberg - Bog - Alban Institute, Inc - Plusbog.dk

Pastors say goodbye to congregations. Sometimes their goodbyes are timely and sweet; sometimes they are jarring and painful. But as they leave, they face a unique journey of grief, one shaped by their role. They face both the outward grief of leaving people behind and the inward grief of leaving an identity behind. In The Graceful Exit , Lutheran pastor Mary Lindberg shares insights from her experience of ending her service to a congregation, as well as wisdom from other pastors who have changed their life work. Lindberg invites readers to pull apart the strands of self and role, individual and community; confront regrets, confusion, and dislocation; and figure out where and who God is at this juncture in their lives. She offers the book she wishes someone had handed her about finding a new church home, about getting a life, about relating to the colleagues who stayed. She reflects on how to be a pastor in a non-pastoral role, how to find community, and how to be graceful in the midst of the awkward unknown. Lindberg acknowledges that as pastors leave congregations, they have to discern how to wrap up their ministry and get out the door without regrets. She recognizes that most pastors will struggle with the spiritual themes of fulfillment, surrender, community, legacy, and separation. But she also believes pastors can face these challenges together. The Graceful Exit invites them into a community of healing and shows them that God walks with them to a new place, even as God keeps on loving the place they have left.

Gangland Chicago - Richard C. Lindberg - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

This engrossing tale of gangs and organized criminality begins in the frontier saloons situated in the marshy flats of Chicago, the future world class city of Mid-continent. Gangland Chicago recounts the era of parlor gambling, commercialized vice districts continuing through the bloody Prohibition bootlegging wars; failed reform movements; the rise of post-World War II juvenile criminal gangs and the saga of the Blackstone Rangers in a chaotic, racially divided city. , Gang violence and street crime is endemic in contemporary Chicago. There is much more to the saga of crime, politics, and armed violence than Al Capone and John Dillinger. Gangland Chicago explores the changing patterns of criminal behavior, politics, gangs, youth crime and the failures of reform in its historic totality. Richard Lindberg takes the reader on a journey through decades of a troubled past to delve deep into the evolution of street gangs and organized violence endemic in Chicago. Small ethnic gangs organized in ethnic slum districts of the city expanded into the well-known organized crime syndicates of Chicago’s history. Gangland Chicago is full of stories of unchecked violence, lawlessness, and mayhem. Unlike other standard true crime accounts focused exclusively on the Prohibition era, this historical look-back probes the obscure and forgotten dark corners of city crime history. Lindberg details how both “organized” and “dis-organized” street gangs have paralyzed city neighborhoods and transformed the crimes of the Windy City from street thuggery and common ruffians protected and nurtured by politicians into a protected class is gripping. Gangland Chicago is a revealing look at the Chicago underworld of yesterday and today. This comprehensive volume is sure to entertain and inform any reader interested in the evolution of organized crime and gangs in America’s most representative city of the American Heartland.

Literary Friendship - Brita Lindberg Seyersted - Bog - University of Tennessee Press - Plusbog.dk

Southern novelist Caroline Gordon maintained a friendship with English editor and author Ford Madox Ford that figures prominently in the literary history of the twentieth century. Ford was Gordon’s generous mentor, showing an interest in her work that helped build her confidence as a writer. Gordon, for her part, helped promote Ford to an American audience. The present publication of the close correspondence between them throws a new, important light on their relationship. These letters, all but one of which have never before been published, cover the years 1930–1939—from Gordon's completion of her first novel, Penhally, to Ford's death. Reflecting the period in which they enjoyed their closest contact, the correspondence testifies to the depth and breadth of the mutual esteem in which they held each other. The correspondence touches on many facets of both literary life and life itself, offering unusual glimpses into the unconventional world in which Gordon and Ford moved. The letters reveal much about the economic hardships of writers and artists during the Depression era, and the two authors exchange advice on how to make a decent living from their work. Gordon's letters in particular give vivid and often amusing insights into the life of a struggling writer. Gordon and Ford also comment on a number of well-known authors and editors of their day—including Katherine Anne Porter, Maxwell Perkins, Robert Penn Warren, Ellen Glasgow, and William Faulkner. More important, they discuss each other's work and exchange thoughts on literary technique. On the informal side, they share their passion for raising vegetables and chickens. Brita Lindberg-Seyersted's introduction provides a biographical and historical context for the correspondence, and her annotations to the letters identify the many literary personages and allusions they include. This carefully assembled volume enhances our appreciation of both of these authors and helps illuminate the modernist era of Anglo-American literature. The Editor: Brita Lindberg-Seyersted is professor of American literature at the University of Oslo. Among her other books is Pound/Ford: The Story of a Literary Friendship.

Means to an End - Tod Lindberg - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

" The International Criminal Court remains a sensitive issue in U.S. foreign policy circles. It was agreed to at the tail end of the Clinton administration, but with serious reservations. In 2002 the Bush administration ceremoniously reversed course and ""unsigned"" the Rome Statute that had established the Court. But recent developments in Washington and elsewhere indicate that the United States may be moving toward de facto acceptance of the Court and active cooperation in its mission. In Means to an End , Lee Feinstein and Tod Lindberg reassess the relationship of the United States and the ICC, as well as American policy toward international justice more broadly. Praise for the hardcover edition of Means to an End ""Books of this sort are all too rare. Two experienced policy intellectuals, one liberal, one conservative, have come together to find common ground on a controversial foreign policy issue.... The book is short, but it goes a long way toward clearing the ideological air."" — Foreign Affairs ""A well-researched and timely contribution to the debate over America''s proper relationship to the International Criminal Court. Rigorous in its arguments and humane in its conclusions, the volume is an indispensable guide for scholars and policymakers alike."" —Madeleine K. Albright, former U.S. Secretary of State ""Two of our nation''s leading authorities on preventing atrocities have joined to make a convincing argument that closer cooperation with the International Criminal Court will help promote human rights and the values on which America was founded."" —Angelina Jolie, co-chair, Jolie-Pitt Foundation "
