By improving our understanding of how the tangible and intangible dimensions of heritage are correlated, we could develop a relationship with heritage that goes beyond the mere act of conservation. This book argues that we need to recognize the historic monument as a tangible aspect of a holistic expression of culture that is rooted in specific spatio-temporal conditions. However, since the latter are constantly changing, it is vital to identify an implicit contradiction with the goals of conservation. As the intangible dimensions are more dynamic, driven by the transmission, reception, and advancement of knowledge, the reliance of the prevailing treatment of heritage today, conservation, ossifies this relationship. By examining three major heritage monuments - the Pantheon, Teotihuacan''s Sun Pyramid and Alhambra - the book shows how these sites are the product of multiple strategies and unforeseen agents, accumulated through history. It emphasizes how these historical trends need to be better understood in order to attain a more ''organic'' relationship with heritage and offers some recommendations that should be analyzed in participative processes of deliberation: the Pantheon''s continuity could be extended; the Pyramid''s loss, accepted; and Alhambra''s exclusion, reversed. In this way, the book invites people to engage heritage from a historical understanding that is open to critical reassessment, dialogue, and cooperation.

Mesh adaptation methods can have a profound impact on the numerical solution of partial differential equations. If devised and implemented properly, adaptation significantly reduces the size of the algebraic systems resulting from the discretization, while ensuring that applicable error tolerances are met. In this monograph, drawing from many years of experience, the authors give a comprehensive presentation of metric-based anisotropic hp-mesh adaptation methods. A large part of this monograph is devoted to the derivation of computable interpolation error estimates on simplicial meshes, which take into account the geometry of mesh elements as well as the anisotropic features of the interpolated function. These estimates are then used for the optimization of corresponding finite element spaces in a variety of settings. Both steady and time dependent problems are treated, as well as goal-oriented adaptation. Practical aspects of implementation are also explored, including several algorithms. Many numerical experiments using the discontinuous Galerkin method are presented to illustrate the performance of the adaptive techniques. This monograph is intended for scientists and researchers, including doctoral and master-level students. Portions of the text can also be used as study material for advanced university lectures concerning a posteriori error analysis and mesh adaptation.

This is the first book-length study foregrounding Auden’s sense of place as a means for enhancing our grasp of this crucial twentieth-century poet. Proposing that Auden had a remarkable spatial sensibility, this book concentrates on his treatment of his homeland England, as well as the North Pennines and Iceland, both of which served as his ‘good’ places, ‘holy’ grounds and sources of topophilic sentiment. The readings draw on the scholarship of humanistic geography, tracing patterns of mental constructs which emerge from spatial experience. In a scholarly but engaging way, this book argues that focusing on Auden’s poetics of place as it emerged and evolved can be instrumental to our understanding of this influential poet not only in relation to his epoch but also to the Anglophone poetic tradition. Precisely because of his stature, these elaborations on Auden’s preoccupation with places, escapism, borders and local identity promise to enrich our understanding of the cultural and intellectual climate of the interwar period, when established notions of local places and cultures were beginning to be contested by internationalisation. This study will be of interest to both academics and students in the field of Anglophone literary studies while also appealing to those attracted to Auden’s poetry, interwar culture and the literary representation of space.
