The Golden Helmet" and "The Green Helmet" - W. B. Yeats - Bog - Cornell University Press - Plusbog.dk

From reviews of The Cornell Yeats series: "For students of Yeats the whole series is bound to become an essential reference source and a stimulus to important critical re-readings of Yeats''s major works. In a wider context, the series will also provide an extraordinary and perhaps unique insight into the creative process of a great artists."—Irish Literary Supplement "I consider the Cornell Yeats one of the most important scholarly projects of our time."—A. Walton Litz, Princeton University, coeditor of The Collected Poems of William Carols Williams and Personae: The Shorter Poems of Ezra Pound "The most ambitious of the many important projects in current studies of Yeats and perhaps of modern poetry generally.... The list of both general and series editors, as well as prospective preparers of individual volumes, reads like a Who''s Who of Yeats textual studies in North America. Further, the project carries the blessing of Yeats''s heirs and bespeaks an ongoing commitment from a major university press.... The series will inevitably engender critical studies based on a more solid footing than those of any other modern poet.... Its volumes will be consulted long after gyres of currently fashionable theory have run on."—Yeats Annual (1983) William Butler Yeats''s Helmet plays (The Green Helmet, in verse, and its earlier prose version The Golden Helmet) are part of the author''s cycle of plays dealing with the life and death of the legendary Irish hero Cuchulain. First conceived in 1907, in the aftermath of the riots at the Abbey Theatre over J. M. Synge''s Playboy of the Western World, the Helmet plays were written at a crucial turning point in Yeats''s early career: politically, his disillusionment with Irish cultural nationalism was growing; professionally, he was beginning to separate himself in bitterness from the day-to-day operation of the Abbey; and aesthetically, he was continuing to incorporate his interest in the Japanese Noh tradition into his own dramatic vision. All of these developments in Yeats''s life and work are visible in the Helmet plays. This Cornell Yeats volume traces the evolution of the Helmet plays from the first versions of The Golden Helmet, published in prose in 1908, to the revision into verse in The Green Helmet, which appeared in 1910. All of the existing manuscript materials for the play—including the author''s autograph manuscripts, revised proofs, and printed editions marked in the author''s hand—are either reproduced photographically or transcribed in this scholarly edition. The edition also includes a census of the manuscripts, editor''s notes, and an introduction outlining the history of the play''s composition, production, and publication. This edition makes visible the complex evolution of these texts during pivotal years in Yeats''s career.

Testing of Body Armor Materials - Board On Army Science And Technology - Bog - National Academies Press - Plusbog.dk

Testing of Body Armor Materials - Board On Army Science And Technology - Bog - National Academies Press - Plusbog.dk

In 2009, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released the report Warfighter Support: Independent Expert Assessment of Army Body Armor Test Results and Procedures Needed Before Fielding, which commented on the conduct of the test procedures governing acceptance of body armor vest-plate inserts worn by military service members. This GAO report, as well as other observations, led the Department of Defense Director, Operational Test & Evaluation, to request that the National Research Council (NRC) Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences conduct a three-phase study to investigate issues related to the testing of body armor materials for use by the U.S. Army and other military departments. Phase I and II resulted in two NRC letter reports: one in 2009 and one in 2010. This report is Phase III in the study. Testing of Body Armor Materials: Phase III provides a roadmap to reduce the variability of clay processes and shows how to migrate from clay to future solutions, as well as considers the use of statistics to permit a more scientific determination of sample sizes to be used in body armor testing. This report also develops ideas for revising or replacing the Prather study methodology, as well as reviews comments on methodologies and technical approaches to military helmet testing. Testing of Body Armor Materials: Phase III also considers the possibility of combining various national body armor testing standards.

Sports and the Law - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Focus on Current Legal Concerns The unprecedented demise of the 1994 baseball season and the long hockey negotiations have focused more attention than ever before on legal issues in sports, ranging from the constitutional rights of college athletes to the liability of football-helmet makers. Through 50 original essays this first-of-its-kind handbook examines liability issues peculiar to sports, discusses disputes involving some of the most famous people and events in sports history, explores the ramifications of antitrust laws as they apply to athletics, and probes the increasingly sensitive and litigious area of sex and race discrimination. Essays discuss influential issues Many of the essays discuss subjects that recently have gained increasing prominence, such as suits alleging misrepresentation and unfair treatment of athletes by coaches. Other essays deal with the action of sports commissioners, or the policies of governing bodies, especially the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Useful for lawyers and fans alike Lawyers unfamiliar with sports law will appreciate the book as a reliable introduction to this rapidly expanding field. For scholars in other fields it serves as a legal primer and a quick survey of cases and issues. The book is especially useful in college libraries as a source of answers to sports questions and a reliable resource for writing term papers. Finally, sports fans familiar with the athletic achievements of Oscar Robertson, John Mackey, Curt Flood, and others, will discover here the details of their participation in the legal arena.

Niki Lauda: His Competition History - Jon Saltinstall - Bog - Evro Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Niki Lauda: His Competition History - Jon Saltinstall - Bog - Evro Publishing - Plusbog.dk

This is the story of Niki Luada's racing career. - Climbing the ladder: starting against his family’s wishes with a Mini in 1968, Niki Lauda drove a Formula Vee Kaimann in 1969 and had a disastrous Formula 3 season with McNamara in 1970 before switching to a Porsche sports car; with progress stalling, he took out a loan to buy a Formula 2 seat at March in 1971. - Faltering in Formula 1: he debuted with March at the 1971 Austrian Grand Prix, then stayed with the team in 1972; he moved to BRM for 1973, still paying his way with further borrowing - and some income from racing touring cars — but in all this time he had only one points-scoring Formula 1 finish. - The Ferrari years: finally Lauda fulfilled his promise after receiving the call to Maranello, winning the World Championship twice in his four years there, in 1975 and 1977, but he left after tensions with the team arose in his final season. - The Brabham years: Lauda famously won the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix in Brabham's 'fan car.' but thereafter the team’s competitiveness declined and he retired at the end of 1979, tired of driving round in circles’ and focused instead on his new airline, Lauda Air. - The McLaren years: tempted by a salary of unprecedented size, Lauda returned in 1982 after a two-year absence, silenced doubters by winning his third race, and in 1984 secured his third World Championship; at the end of 1985, with a career tally of 25 Grand Prix victories, he hung up his helmet for good.

Imperial Bodies - E. M. Collingham - Bog - John Wiley and Sons Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Imperial Bodies - E. M. Collingham - Bog - John Wiley and Sons Ltd - Plusbog.dk

This innovative volume demonstrates that the body was central to the construction and maintenance of British authority in India. Imperial Bodies explores ways in which the transformation of the British presence in India between 1800 and 1947 involved and relied upon changes in the way the British in India managed, disciplined and displayed their bodies. The move from commerce to control, and then to imperialism and Empire corresponded to a shift in bodily norms. As the nineteenth century progressed, an openness and interest in India gave way to a ban on things Indian. The British rejected curries for tinned ham, cool white clothing for black broadcloth and Indian mistresses for English wives. By the twentieth century, the British official had been transformed into an upright, decent representative of British virtues whose task was to bring civilization to India. By the late nineteenth century, racial theory focused attention on the physique to such an extent that the body became a distinct category within official discourse, regarded as an instrument of rule. The body was used symbolically during Raj ceremonial, and even the pith helmet worn by officials was turned from a reminder of British vulnerability in the tropics into a symbol of British power. Through an in-depth discussion of texts and practices, the body is introduced into the historical account as an active social principle: a force in the construction of social inequalities along lines of race and class. Drawing on a wide range of sources including government records, newspapers, private letters, medical handbooks and cookery books, E.M. Collingham paints a vivid picture of the life and manners of the British in India. This important contribution to both British and imperial history will appeal to students and scholars of cultural and colonial history.

Changing Health Behaviour - Jill Rutter - Bog - Open University Press - Plusbog.dk

Changing Health Behaviour - Jill Rutter - Bog - Open University Press - Plusbog.dk

*Can theory-driven interventions using social cognition models change health behaviour?* How should theoretical models be adapted for intervention?* What are the implications for policy and practice? For many years, social cognition models have been at the forefront of research into predicting and explaining health behaviours. Until recently, there have been few attempts to go beyond prediction and understanding to intervention - but now the position has changed, and a number of excellent interventions have been set up. The purpose of this book is to bring them together in one volume. After an introductory chapter on the models and interventions to be included, there are nine chapters that each address a particular behaviour or set of behaviours, written by the authors of the interventions themselves. Chapters 2 to 4 examine risk-related behaviours (safer-sex; smoking; exposure to radon gas); Chapters 5 to 7 turn to health-enhancing behaviours and screening (reducing fat intake; uptake of vitamin C; breast self-examination; participation in cervical and colorectal cancer screening); and Chapters 8 to 10 explore road safety (speeding by drivers; pedestrian behaviour; and cycle helmet use). The chapters follow a common structure: a presentation of the ''epidemiological facts'' about the behaviour and why an intervention was needed; an outline of the way in which the theoretical model being used was adapted for the intervention; a presentation of the experimental results; and a discussion of their theoretical and practical implications. The book ends with a chapter of commentary on the challenges of devising theory-based interventions.Following on from the highly successful Predicting Health Behaviour edited by Mark Conner and Paul Norman, this book will be recognised as a ground-breaking text in the psychology of health, for students, researchers and practitioners alike.

Turquoise Mosaics from Mexico - Andrew Middleton - Bog - Duke University Press - Plusbog.dk

Turquoise Mosaics from Mexico - Andrew Middleton - Bog - Duke University Press - Plusbog.dk

The nine turquoise mosaics from Mexico are some the most striking pieces in the collections of the British Museum. Among the few surviving such artifacts, these exquisite objects include two masks, a shield, a knife, a helmet, a double-headed serpent, a mosaic on a human skull, a jaguar, and an animal head. They all originate from the Mixtec and Aztec civilizations first encountered by Europeans during the Spanish conquest in the early sixteenth century. The mosaics have long excited admiration for their masterful blend of technical skill and artistry and fascination regarding their association with ritual and ceremony. Only recently though, have scientific investigations undertaken by the British Museum dramatically advanced knowledge of the mosaics by characterizing, for the first time, the variety of natural materials that were used to create them. Illustrated with more than 160 color images, this book describes the recent scientific findings about the mosaics in detail, revealing them to be rich repositories of information about ancient Mexico. The materials used to construct the mosaics demonstrate their makers’ deep knowledge of the natural world and its resources. The effort that would have been involved in procuring the materials testifies to the mosaics’ value and significance in a society imbued with myths and religious beliefs. The British Museum’s analyses have provided evidence of the way that the materials were prepared and assembled, the tools used, and the choices that were made by artisans. In addition, by drawing on historical accounts including early codices, as well as recent archaeological discoveries, specialists have learned more about the place of the mosaics in ancient Mexican culture. Filled with information about the religion, art, and natural and cultural history as well as the extraordinary ability of modern science to enable detailed insight into past eras, Turquoise Mosaics from Mexico offers an overview of the production, utilization, and eventual fate of these beautiful and mysterious objects.
