Lectures on Kahler Groups - Professor Pierre Py - Bog - Princeton University Press - Plusbog.dk

An introduction to the state-of-the-art in the study of Kähler groups This book gives an authoritative and up-to-date introduction to the study of fundamental groups of compact Kähler manifolds, known as Kähler groups. Approaching the subject from the perspective of a geometric group theorist, Pierre Py equips readers with the necessary background in both geometric group theory and Kähler geometry, covering topics such as the actions of Kähler groups on spaces of nonpositive curvature, the large-scale geometry of infinite covering spaces of compact Kähler manifolds, and the topology of level sets of pluriharmonic functions.Presenting the most important results from the past three decades, the book provides graduate students and researchers with detailed original proofs of several central theorems, including Gromov and Schoen’s description of Kähler group actions on trees; the study of solvable quotients of Kähler groups following the works of Arapura, Beauville, Campana, Delzant, and Nori; and Napier and Ramachandran’s work characterizing covering spaces of compact Kähler manifolds having many ends. It also describes without proof many of the recent breakthroughs in the field. Lectures on Kähler Groups also gives, in eight appendixes, detailed introductions to such topics as the study of ends of groups and spaces, groups acting on trees and Hilbert spaces, potential theory, and L 2 cohomology on Riemannian manifolds.

The Hidden History of Women's Ordination - Gary (p John Nobili Macy - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Hidden History of Women's Ordination - Gary (p John Nobili Macy - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Roman Catholic leadership still refuses to ordain women officially or even to recognize that women are capable of ordination. But is the widely held assumption that women have always been excluded from such roles historically accurate? How might the current debate change if our view of the history of women''s ordination were to change? In The Hidden History of Women''s Ordination, Gary Macy offers illuminating and surprising answers to these questions. Macy argues that for the first twelve hundred years of Christianity, women were in fact ordained into various roles in the church. He uncovers references to the ordination of women in papal, episcopal and theological documents of the time, and the rites for these ordinations have survived. The insistence among scholars that women were not ordained, Macy shows, is based on a later definition of ordination, one that would have been unknown in the early Middle Ages. In the early centuries of Christianity, ordination was understood as the process and the ceremony by which one moved to any new ministry in the community. In the early Middle Ages, women served in at least four central ministries: episcopa (woman bishop), presbytera (woman priest), deaconess and abbess. The ordinations of women continued until the Gregorian reforms of the eleventh and twelfth centuries radically altered the definition of ordination. These reforms not only removed women from the ordained ministry, but also attempted to eradicate any memory of women''s ordination in the past. With profound implications for how women are viewed in Christian history, and for current debates about the role of women in the church, The Hidden History of Women''s Ordination offers new answers to an old question and overturns a long-held erroneous belief.

Smooth Homogeneous Structures in Operator Theory - Daniel Beltita - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Geometric ideas and techniques play an important role in operator theory and the theory of operator algebras. Smooth Homogeneous Structures in Operator Theory builds the background needed to understand this circle of ideas and reports on recent developments in this fruitful field of research. Requiring only a moderate familiarity with functional analysis and general topology, the author begins with an introduction to infinite dimensional Lie theory with emphasis on the relationship between Lie groups and Lie algebras. A detailed examination of smooth homogeneous spaces follows. This study is illustrated by familiar examples from operator theory and develops methods that allow endowing such spaces with structures of complex manifolds. The final section of the book explores equivariant monotone operators and Kähler structures. It examines certain symmetry properties of abstract reproducing kernels and arrives at a very general version of the construction of restricted Grassmann manifolds from the theory of loop groups. The author provides complete arguments for nearly every result. An extensive list of references and bibliographic notes provide a clear picture of the applicability of geometric methods in functional analysis, and the open questions presented throughout the text highlight interesting new research opportunities. Daniel Beltitâ is a Principal Researcher at the Institute of Mathematics "Simion Stoilow" of the Romanian Academy, Bucharest, Romania.
