The Roots and Philosophy of Dynamic Manual Interface is a personal account of the development and evolution of Frank Lowen’s hands-on therapy. A former program director and popular instructor at the Upledger Institute, Lowen begins with his own history and an account of the unique events that have shaped his career. Originally schooled as an artist, Lowen developed an interest in alternative medicine and bodywork. He describes his training at the Upledger Institute (which led to teaching positions and directing the institute’s visceral manipulation program) as well as his work with Jean-Pierre Barral, described by Time magazine as a top healing innovator in the new millennium. Lowen goes on to describe the emergence of his own techniques and new findings that have become the basis for his Dynamic Manual Interface (DMI) method. Implementing light touch, DMI works with tissue movements, rhythms, and relationships not addressed in other manual therapies such as craniosacral therapy and visceral manipulation. DMI also incorporates new techniques for feeling and resolving tension patterns based on Lowen’s discovery of correlations between the hands and different bodily systems. Results of this approach, explored in the book, include restored balance, accelerated healing, decreased pain, and improved mental clarity.

Syntax-Semantics Interface is a collection of papers written by leading Czech linguist Eva Hajicová between 1973 and 2014 that draw on the theoretical framework of the functional generative description proposed by Petr Sgall in the early 1960s and developed since. The book reflects Hajicová’s research contributions to four main domains: the specification of underlying (deep) sentence structure (analyzed in terms of dependency relations); the information structure of the sentence (topic-focus articulation) and its relation to the specification of presupposition and negation and to other related phenomena; the building of a scheme for an annotated corpus of Czech to serve, among other things, in the verification of theoretical linguistic claims; and some fundamental aspects of discourse structure, namely the concept of the hierarchy of elements in the stock of knowledge shared by speaker and hearer. Through new introductory statements, Hajicová also compares her original findings with current state-of-the-art of linguistic theory at home and abroad.

This book is an account of how I addressed the need for a smartphone app that would allow someone with Type 1 diabetes to self-manage their condition. Its presentation highlights the major features of the app''s interface design. They include the selection of metaphors appropriate to a user''s need to form a mental model of the app; the importance of visible context; the benefits of consistency; and considerations of a user''s cognitive and perceptual abilities. The latter is a key feature of the book. But the book is also about the design process, and especially about the valuable contributions made by the many focus group meetings in which design ideas were first presented to people with Type 1 diabetes. Their critique, and sometimes their rejection, of interface ideas were crucial to the development of the app. I hope this book will prove useful for teaching and design guidance.
