This book is a portrait of the period that became known as the era of BR Blue – the 1970s and 1980s. The railway appeared to be caught up in a world of its own. It was still recognisably the one from the steam era, and happy to be living in the past rather than making strides toward the future. As with most of the nationalised industries, labour relations were somewhat fraught. The railway invested in electrification and everything else was standardised to minimise costs. Unsurprisingly, stagnation haunted the network.Some would suggest the railway was doing a particularly fine job given the circumstances. It was fortunate to be blessed with a dedicated workforce and supported by thousands of people who travelled by train. For those of us who remember those days fondly, this is how we would prefer to remember that time.

It had been constructed in a haphazard way in the previous century, when the railway was seen as the future. Despite this, there remained a dedicated community of enthusiasts who considered the railway to be a masterpiece and would capture it on film whenever possible.These photographs, published here for the first time, illustrate perfectly why so many view the BR Blue period with such fondness.

The area covered ranges from northern Derbyshire and northern Cheshire to include the last days of steam in the Peak District, Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cumbria up to the Scottish border. Diesel trains had been introduced even before the announcement of the British Railways modernisation plan in 1955. The first was the BR Derby Lightweight design of 1954, followed by the Metro-Cammell trains in 1955. The Derby units were placed in service in the West Riding of Yorkshire on many services around Leeds and Bradford. They were an instant success, these new cleaner and faster trains increasing traffic levels on all the routes that they were used on.This led to BR introducing similar types of this train all over the BR system. These were built by many different companies and used on services varying from city commuter trains to middle-distance mainline workings.George Woods illustrates the trains in service from Perth down to Cornwall and Workington to Hull between 1966 and 1985 through a fine collection of previously unpublished photographs.
