Fulk examines the evidence for chronological and regional variation in the meter of Old English verse, studying such linguistic variables as the treatment of West Germanic parasite vowels, contracted vowels, and short syllables under secondary and tertiary stress, as well as a variety of supposed dialect features. Fulk''s study of such variables points the way to a revised understanding of the role of syllable length in the construction of early Germanic meters and furnishes criteria for distinguishing dialectal from poetic features in the language of the major Old English poetic codices. On this basis, it is possible to draw conclusions about the probable dialect origins of much verse, to delineate the characteristics of at least four discrete periods in the development of Old English meter, and with some probability to assign to them many of the longer poems, such as Genesis A, Beowulf , and the works of Cynewulf. Catullus (by a slender thread) has survived, but later contemporaries valued his friend Calvus just as highly; comparison of the two reveals an extraordinarily close relationship. Horace mentions Varius Rufus in the same breath as Virgil. Adrian Hollis prints fragments of up to thirty poets, with an individual introduction and a translation for each. Almost every genre of ancient poetry is represented, from heroic epic to scurrilous lampoon. Hollis''s commentary, fuller and richer than any yet published, contains many new ideas. In some cases (such as Varius Rufus) the fragments illumine the history of this period, which saw the collapse of the Roman Republic and establishment of the Augustan Empire. Taken together, these fragmentary texts enable us better to appreciate surviving great poets such as Catullus and Virgil.

Recent research work in the Gbps data rates around 60 GHz band has focused on short-range indoor applications, such as uncompressed video transfer, high-speed file transfer between electronic devices, and communication to and from kiosk. Many of these applications are limited to 10 m or less, because of the huge free space path loss and oxygen absorption for 60 GHz band MMW signal. This book introduces new knowledge and novel circuit techniques to design low-power MMW circuits and systems. It also focuses on unlocking the potential applications of the 60 GHz band for high-speed outdoor applications. The innovative design application significantly improves and enables high-data-rate low-cost communication links between two access points seamlessly. The 60 GHz transceiver system-on-chip provides an alternative solution to upgrade existing networks without introducing any building renovation or external network laying works.
