Orienting to Chance - Omar Lizardo - Bog - The University of Chicago Press - Plusbog.dk

Explores the implications of chance and uncertainty in social theory and offers a new interpretation of the sociological canon. Since the founding of the discipline, sociologists have endeavored to understand the structures of groups, organizations, and societies, and how these entities condition our behavior. While some of the foundational theorists saw these processes as largely deterministic, sociological theory has increasingly insisted on the importance of culture in shaping our position in and responses to social groups. In Orienting to Chance, sociologists Michael Strand and Omar Lizardo aim to show that the social order bears an unmistakable link to chance and urge us to think about how it conditions our actions. Strand and Lizardo provide a sweeping overview of a new social theory framework that they call probabilism. Using examples of probabilism in sociology, particularly in the work of Max Weber, W. E. B. Du Bois, and Pierre Bourdieu, they describe probabilism’s place in multiple fields of science. As the authors argue, their effort at redefinition and recovery helps position sociology as a field of the future, while also keeping it grounded in core issues of action, structure, culture, inequality, and inequity. By sharing these groundbreaking insights and revealing wider theoretical claims about mortality, fate, and technology in the contemporary era, Strand and Lizardo demonstrate how probabilism is an essential intervention for understanding the inevitable role of uncertainty in social life.

Artists' Self-Portraits - Omar Calabrese - Bog - Abbeville Press Inc.,U.S. - Plusbog.dk

Artists' Self-Portraits - Omar Calabrese - Bog - Abbeville Press Inc.,U.S. - Plusbog.dk

In his fascinating survey, art historian Omar Calabrese reveals that self-portraits through the ages are both a reflection of the artist and of the period in which the artist lived. Organised thematically, the author first presents a basic definition of the genre of the self-portrait, interpreting the picture to be a manifestation of self-identity, and including examples from an Egyptian tomb painting and pictures on stained glass during the Middle Ages and continuing to modern times. The next chapter focuses on the turning point for the establishment of the genre during the Renaissance when the status of the painter or sculptor was raised from artisan to artist and, as a result, portraits of the artist were considered worthwhile pictures. At first a self-portrait was hidden in a narrative painting: an artist would paint his image as part of a crowd scene, for example, or as a mythological figure. On the other extreme, once the genre was accepted, it was practiced by some artists-Rembrandt, van Gogh, Munch, and Dali, for instance-as almost an obsession. In contemporary art the self-portrait can become a deconstructed genre with the artist hiding or satirising himself until he nearly disappears on the canvas. Among the 300 pictures featured here are examples by such artists as Albrecht Dürer, Velázquez, Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun, Ingres, Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Gainsborough, Matisse, James Ensor, Egon Schiele, Frida Kahlo, Man Ray, Henry Moore, Robert Rauschenberg, Norman Rockwell, and Roy Lichtenstein. This intriguing book is a fresh way to appreciate the history of art and to understand that a self-portrait is far more complex and meaningful than merely a portrait of the artist.

Islamic Jihadism and the Laws of War - Omar ) Mekky - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Islamic Jihadism and the Laws of War - Omar ) Mekky - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

The rapid rise of global Islamic Jihadism in the past few decades and the limited success of the anti-terror campaign in halting its expansion have raised hard-hitting questions about how different political actors might preserve and restore the world''s peace and security. Since the end of the Second World War, international law has often been the chief instrument employed to address global conundrums of this kind. Nevertheless, international law alone cannot solve this problem. Jihadist groups often cite Islamic law argumentations to justify their combat-related actions against states while rejecting traditional international law rules. On the other hand, some states themselves ignore traditional international law rules to apply their so-called "counterterrorism" measures. The internationally recognized laws of war - created to protect those who do not participate in hostilities - are constantly challenged by jihadist groups and responding states in justification of their combat actions. In Islamic Jihadism and the Laws of War , Dr Omar Mekky explores both sides'' legal frameworks, synthesising findings from both English and Arabic sources. Drawing from the author''s field expertise as a legal advisor in the Middle East and North Africa, the book narrates how Islamic Jihadism began and evolved, outlines the laws jihadists apply during combat, addresses how states often react in their fights against jihadist groups, and aims for a pragmatic humanitarian legal formula. An essential resource for legal professionals, policymakers, academics, and students, Mekky''s book initiates a constructive dialogue between international law and Islamic law.

Do International Corruption Metrics Matter? - Omar E. Hawthorne - Bog - Lexington Books - Plusbog.dk

Do International Corruption Metrics Matter? - Omar E. Hawthorne - Bog - Lexington Books - Plusbog.dk

Corruption, often seen as the main hindrance to development and growth in many societies, has led to greater demand for accountability and transparency in how governments conduct their businesses. This text examines the impact of Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index and whether or not the CPI and hence TI matter. It explores three areas: the world’s political and economic responses and Jamaica’s policy responses to the CPI. Jamaica is selected for a case study due to its high CPI rating from TI; Jamaica is a country that has strong anti-corruption laws but, nonetheless, sees its CPI ranking worsen almost yearly. Taking into consideration the importance scholars and policymakers give to corruption’s effect on development, the findings show that the CPI—the most cited corruption index—does not change the behavior of world’s political and economic policymakers. Although the index is published yearly, there is no measured change as it regards political and economic policymakers. Nonetheless, Jamaican policymakers pay significant attention to their performance on TI’s CPI. Transparency International’s CPI is used as the authoritative tool to assess countries’ corruption perceptions scores by both international governments and several international agencies. The use and reference of TI’s CPI does not translate as the main factor in regards to the increase and or decrease of aid flow. Surprisingly, there was no evidence that the CPI affected the credit rating and or investment flow into Jamaica. It did indicate, however, that TI’s CPI is reflective of the global market perceptions of Jamaica’s economy. Research shows that the index does change policy responses in Jamaica as government officials across varying agencies pay attention to the index and the progression and or worsening of the country’s score.
