The Montana State Constitution - Associate Professor Fritz Snyder - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Montana State Constitution - Associate Professor Fritz Snyder - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Montana''s state constitution was created during the early 1970s. Progressive, innovative and pragmatic, it combines a strong concern for individual rights, personal liberty, and individual dignity while seeking to keep government open and responsive to the will of the people of Montana. It also stresses rights to a clean and healthful environment. The Montana State Constitution is the first reference guide to offer an in-depth analysis of the state''s constitutional history. In it, Larry Elison and Fritz Snyder provide the text of the constitution, its meaning, and its legal interpretations. It is an excellent research tool for those interested in Montana''s constitutional history and case law, and it includes a comprehensive bibliographic essay dealing with available primary and secondary research sources. Previously published by Greenwood, this title has been brought back in to circulation by Oxford University Press with new verve. Re-printed with standardization of content organization in order to facilitate research across the series. This title, as with all titles in the series, is set to join the dynamic revision cycle of The Oxford Commentaries on the State Constitutions of the United States. The Oxford Commentaries on the State Constitutions of the United States is an important new series that reflects a renewed international interest in constitutional history and provides expert insight into each of the 50 state constitutions. Each volume in this innovative series contains a historical overview of the state''s constitutional development, a section-by-section analysis of its current constitution, and a comprehensive guide to further research. Under the expert editorship of Professor G. Alan Tarr, Director of the Center on State Constitutional Studies at Rutgers University, this series provides essential reference tools for understanding state constitutional law. Books in the series can be purchased individually or as part of a complete set, giving readers unmatched access to these important political documents.

Exploring the Infinite - Jennifer (university Of Montana) Brooks - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Exploring the Infinite - Jennifer (university Of Montana) Brooks - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Exploring the Infinite addresses the trend toward a combined transition course and introduction to analysis course. It guides the reader through the processes of abstraction and log- ical argumentation, to make the transition from student of mathematics to practitioner of mathematics. This requires more than knowledge of the definitions of mathematical structures, elementary logic, and standard proof techniques. The student focused on only these will develop little more than the ability to identify a number of proof templates and to apply them in predictable ways to standard problems. This book aims to do something more; it aims to help readers learn to explore mathematical situations, to make conjectures, and only then to apply methods of proof. Practitioners of mathematics must do all of these things. The chapters of this text are divided into two parts. Part I serves as an introduction to proof and abstract mathematics and aims to prepare the reader for advanced course work in all areas of mathematics. It thus includes all the standard material from a transition to proof" course. Part II constitutes an introduction to the basic concepts of analysis, including limits of sequences of real numbers and of functions, infinite series, the structure of the real line, and continuous functions. Features - - Two part text for the combined transition and analysis course - - - New approach focuses on exploration and creative thought - - - Emphasizes the limit and sequences - - - Introduces programming skills to explore concepts in analysis - - - Emphasis in on developing mathematical thought - - - Exploration problems expand more traditional exercise sets -

The Last Best Place? - Leah Schmalzbauer - Bog - Stanford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Southwest Montana is beautiful country, evoking mythologies of freedom and escape long associated with the West. Partly because of its burgeoning presence in popular culture, film, and literature, including William Kittredge's anthology The Last Best Place, the scarcely populated region has witnessed an influx of wealthy, white migrants over the last few decades. But another, largely invisible and unstudied type of migration is also present. Though Mexican migrants have worked on Montana's ranches and farms since the 1920s, increasing numbers of migrant families—both documented and undocumented—are moving to the area to support its growing construction and service sectors. The Last Best Place? asks us to consider the multiple racial and class-related barriers that Mexican migrants must negotiate in the unique context of Montana's rural gentrification. These daily life struggles and inter-group power dynamics are deftly examined through extensive interviews and ethnography, as are the ways gender structures inequalities within migrant families and communities. But Leah Schmalzbauer's research extends even farther to highlight the power of place and demonstrate how Montana's geography and rurality intersect with race, class, gender, family, illegality, and transnationalism to affect migrants' well-being and aspirations. Though the New West is just one among many new destinations, it forces us to recognize that the geographic subjectivities and intricacies of these destinations must be taken into account to understand the full complexity of migrant life.

Captured in the Middle - Sidner Larson - Bog - University of Washington Press - Plusbog.dk

Captured in the Middle - Sidner Larson - Bog - University of Washington Press - Plusbog.dk

Sidner Larson’s Captured in the Middle embodies the very nature of Indian storytelling, which is circular, drawing upon the personal experiences of the narrator at every turn. Larson teaches about contemporary American Indian literature by describing his own experiences as a child on the Fort Belknap Reservation in Montana and as a professor at the University of Oregon. Larson argues that contemporary Native American literary criticism is stalled. On one hand are the scholars who portray Indians stereotypically, assuming that the experiences of all tribal groups have largely been the same. On the other hand are those scholars who focus on the “authenticity” of the writer. In contrast, Larson considers the scholarship of Vine Deloria, Jr., who has a genuine understanding of the balance required in dealing with these issues. Two writers who have successfully redescribed many of the contemporary romantic stereotypes are James Welch and Louise Erdrich, both northern Plains Indians whose works are markedly different, their writing highlighting the disparate ways tribal groups have responded to colonization. Larson describes Indians today as postapocalyptic peoples who have already lived through the worst imaginable suffering. By confronting the issues of fear, suppression, and lost identity through literature, Indians may finally move forward to imagine and create for themselves a better future, serving as models for the similarly fractured cultures found throughout the world today.

Dignity as a Human Right? - George P. Smith - Bog - Lexington Books - Plusbog.dk

Dignity as a Human Right? - George P. Smith - Bog - Lexington Books - Plusbog.dk

Dignity is seen, commonly, as an ethical obligation owed to human persons. The dimensions of this obligation are subject to wide discussion and defy universal agreement. Dignity is seen, commonly, as an ethical obligation owed to human persons. Dignity as a Human Right? examines dignity within the prism of death, and more particularly, its humane and dignified management. Although there is no domestic or international right to die with dignity, within the right to life should, arguably, be a right to dignity and self-determination especially at its end-stage; for, a powerful interface exists between the right to human dignity and the very right to life, to love and humanity as well as compassion at its conclusion. Legislative efforts--nationally and internationally--have begun to recognize a right to die with dignity when a condition of medical futility exists. There are presently five states and the District of Columbia, together with a judicial interpretation from the Montana Supreme Court, which recognize death assistance for the terminally ill. Internationally, Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Switzerland are seen as leaders in this recognition. The United Nations has played a significant role in framing end-of-life decision making within the ambit of human rights protection. The UN Charter states unequivocally that the dignity and worth of the human person must be protected and safeguarded. Similarly, among other instruments, the Universal Declaration on Human Rights acknowledges that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.

Mining Morality - William P. George - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Mining Morality - William P. George - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Employing “self-sharpening tools” found in the work of theologian and philosopher Bernard Lonergan, Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato si’, and international law, William P. George brings mining to personal and collective moral awareness by “prospecting for ethics” at selected sites: (1) Butte, Montana, “the Richest Hill on Earth,” once bound to Chuquicamata, Chile, by a company that spanned two continents and nearly owned a state; (2) the tiny island nation of Nauru, called Pleasant Island until it was devastated by phosphate mining and the breaking of a sacred trust by foreign powers; (3) the deep seabed, governed by the United Nations Law of the Sea, a “constitution for the oceans” that regards much of the resource-rich seabed as humankind’s “common heritage”; (4) Africa, with its uranium mines but also its conflicts over what “being nuclear” means in the wake of colonialism, apartheid, and Hiroshima; and (5) mineral-rich asteroids, speeding through space, where mining rights are contested, even as space entrepreneurs look to become the world’s first trillionaires. George introduces readers to remarkable moral miners––the women of Butte and Chuquicamata, a World Court judge from Sri Lanka, the Rocket Boys of Coalwood, West Virginia, to name a few––and leads them to consider not only the morality of mining––what’s good and not so good about resource extraction––but also the mining of morality, a venture that Socrates called “the examined life.”

The Making of Hmong America - Kou Yang - Bog - Lexington Books - Plusbog.dk

The Making of Hmong America - Kou Yang - Bog - Lexington Books - Plusbog.dk

This study documents Hmong’s involvement in the Secret War in Laos, their refugee exodus from Laos to the refugee camps in Thailand, and the challenges to find third countries to take Hmong refugees. At the time, Hmong and other highlander refugees from Laos were considered unsuitable to be resettled into the United States. He provides detailed research on the adaptation of Hmong Americans to their new lives in the United States, facing discrimination and prejudice, and the advancement of Hmong Americans over the past 40 years. He presents the Hmong American community as an uprooted refugee community that grew from a small population in 1975 to more than 300,000 by the year 2015; spreading to all 50 states while becoming a diverse and complex American ethnic community. To get better insight into their diversity, complexity, and adaptation to different localities, Kou Yang uses the Hmong communities in Montana, Fresno and Denver as case studies. The progress of Hmong Americans over the past 4 decades is highlighted with a list of many achievements in education, high-tech, academia, political participation, the military and other fields. Readers of this book will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges, complex and diverse experience of the Hmong American community. They will also obtain insight into the overall experience of the Hmong, an ethnic people of Diaspora, found in Asia, the Americas, Africa, Australia, and Europe. They are like bristle-cone pines on the rock that have been exposed to all types of weather, climate and conditions, but they won''t die.
