Semifinalen i kandidatturneringen blev dog endestationen for de danske drømme. I både 1968 og 1971 blev han stoppet af en kommende verdensmester. Først af russeren Boris Spasskij og derefter af amerikaneren Bobby Fischer. Disse to spillede i 1972 en legendarisk match i Reykjavik. Væsentlige begivenheder og episoder fra skakmesterens liv udfoldes også. På og uden for skakbrættet opstod konflikter med Bent Larsen som part.
