British Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks – now Baron Sacks of Aldgate in the City of London – launched his tenure of office in 1991 with the aim of an inclusivist Decade of Jewish Renewal. Within a few years, fulfilling his installation prediction that ‘I will have failures, but I will try again, another way, another time,’ he was attracting calls, from opponents and supporters, for his resignation and the abolition of his office. Reviewing Sacks’ early writings and pronouncements on the theme of inclusivism, Another Way, Another Time demonstrates how, repeatedly, the Chief Rabbi said ‘irreconcilable things to different audiences’ and how, in the process, he induced his kingmaker and foremost patron, Lord (Stanley) Kalms, to declare of Anglo-Jewry: ‘We are in a time warp, and fast becoming an irrelevance in terms of world Jewry.’ Citing support from a variety of sources, this study contends that the Chief Rabbinate has indeed reached the end of the road and explores other paths to the leadership of a pluralistic – and, ideally, inclusivist – community.

Filling an important gap in design history, Another Modernism examines how domestic space was conceived by the US home economics movement in the first half of the 20th century. In doing so, it tells the story of how home economists—mainly women—developed design that challenged the traditional architecture of American farm communities and countered the approach of modernist architects. Uncovering unacknowledged contributions of women to domestic architecture and design history, it reveals early instances of participation, sustainability, and accommodating the disabled body in domestic design. In contrast to the canonical modernist model of space, which is primarily visual, home economists centered on a user who interacts with the interior in a tactile, bodily way. Although both strove for efficiency, they understood it differently: whereas for many of the mainstream modernists the term ‘efficiency’ meant functionalist aesthetics, for home economists it signified design solutions intended to ease the labor of an average American homemaker. The book argues that the home economists’ focus on tactility, the user’s corporeality, movement, access, preferences, and her engagement in the design process, constituted an alternative model of modern architecture – a popular and largely rural modernism centered on the specificity of the female user and her personal experience of the domestic interior.Based on little-known archival material, and with an emphasis on mostly female researchers, designers, and users/occupants, Another Modernism will appeal to architects, design historians, and anyone interested in gender, women''s and disability studies, as well as non-visual approaches to design.

In a time when our loves feel conscripted and exhausted by what we often do not remember desiring, Another Love: A Politics of the Unrequited explores the form, method, imperatives, and inflections of love in the global post colony, and offers a way to re-apprehend and re-inscribe love in an anticolonial, materialist, and nonfascist politics and aesthetics. The figure of “the unrequited” is invoked as a symptom of a brutally loveless yet effusively sentimentalized era, and also as an ineluctable yet very concrete political location in the face of both the intensifying external realities of war, occupation, apartheid, austerity, and terror, as well as the increasingly normalized internalizations of ordinary imperialism, nationalism, neoliberalism, fascism, and colonialism—all of which seem bent on extinguishing the possibility of relation itself. The book asks that we look at practices of love and other material labors that yield and sustain these realities within complex lifeworlds; indeed, those which sustain entire systems of our subjection, extraction, and disposability—such as colonialism, capitalism, liberalism, and fascism—as lifeworlds, especially when given, dominant, forms of recognition, affection, embrace, and belonging are unacceptable or even repulsive.Distancing itself from shortcuts afforded by love’s abstract forms deployed in ethical and moral discourses that at once elevate it yet wholly reduce it to a timeless, apolitical, essence, Another Love sees love as a material and political relation to time and space, signaling willed and unwilled shifts in historical reality in societies juggling various wars and annihilations. It maintains that love is something in and with which we confess our complicities not only with but also against hegemonic notions of belonging, devotion, martyrdom, hospitality, publicity, collectivity, and solidarity nurtured and harvested under capital and colony. The longing and the love—missed by the pernicious and reactionary politics both of liberal democracy and the incidental fascisms that it claims to set out to fix—can give us clues into past, present, and future, moments of rebellion, resistance, rejection, and redemption that are crucial to a liberatory, anticolonial, and antifascist politic, and to rethinking attachment, desire, and relation itself.

Lewis Island in Lambertville, New Jersey, is the site of the Lewis Fishery, the last haul seine American shad fishery on the nontidal Delaware River. The Lewis family has fished in the same spot since 1888 and operated the fishery through five generations. The extended Lewis family, its fishery's crew, and the Lambertville community connect with people throughout the region, including environmentalists concerned about the river. It was a Lewis who raised the alarm and helped resurrect a polluted river and its biosphere. While this once exclusively masculine activity is central to the tiny island, today men, women, and children fish, living out a sense of place, belonging, and sustainability. In Another Haul: Narrative Stewardship and Cultural Sustainability at the Lewis Family Fishery, author Charlie Groth highlights the traditional, vernacular, and everyday cultural expressions of the family and crew to understand how community, culture, and the environment intersect. Groth argues there is a system of narrative here that combines verbal activities and everyday activities. On the basis of over two decades of participation and observation, interviews, surveys, and a wide variety of published sources, Groth identifies a phenomenon she calls "narrative stewardship." This narrative system, emphasizing place, community, and commitment, in turn, encourages environmental and cultural stewardship, tradition, and community. Intricate and embedded, the system appears invisible, but careful study unpacks and untangles how people, often unconsciously, foster sustainability. Though an ethnography of an occupation, the volume encourages readers to consider what arises as special about all cultures and what needs to be seen and preserved.

On a cold February evening, a group of students at Bowdoin College, an elite and historically white liberal arts college in Maine, gathered to drink tequila at a party referred to as “not not a fiesta.” By noon the next day, Instagram videos of students sporting miniature sombreros had spread like wildfire through campus. Over the next few weeks, national media outlets would broadcast the embarrassing fallout. But the frequency with which similar parties recur on campuses across the United States begs the question: what, if anything, do undergraduates learn about race and racism from these encounters? Drawing on interviews and archival research, Yet Another Costume Party Debacle shows us how colleges both contest and reproduce racialized systems of power. Sociologist Ingrid A. Nelson juxtaposes how students and administrators discuss race with how they behave in the aftermath of racially charged campus controversies. Nelson spoke in-depth with students and other key players in several controversial parties—“Cracksgiving,” a “gangster party,” and the “not not a fiesta” tequila party—at Bowdoin. The college’s administrative response failed to encourage productive dialogue or address larger questions about race on campus. Nelson shows how the underlying campus structures at elite liberal arts colleges foster an environment that is ripe for racially charged incidents; we shouldn’t be surprised when we read about yet another costume party debacle. Nelson advises how we can take charge of diversity on our campuses by changing the systems that bring students together and drive them apart.
