Dresden, Carl-Maria von Weber-Museum - Adelheid Luder Zschiesche - Bog - De Gruyter - Plusbog.dk

The life and work of Carl Maria von Weber, the eminent composer and creator of German opera, are inseparable from the city of Dresden. The museum exhibits furniture, artwork, and unique artifacts from the Weber era in original period rooms. In 1818, the "Kapellmeister for life" found refuge in the village of Hosterwitz, near Pillnitz. His retreat was romantically tucked into the hillside vineyards, not far upriver from Dresden. Here, in his "summer paradise" on a vintner's estate, Weber found the peace and quiet that he craved for himself and his family. While the Weber locations of yore have long since disappeared - his apartment in the city, the old court theater, and the Linckesche Bad Theater no longer exist - the Hosterwitz House still vividly commemorates the man and the artist, as well as the artistic circle of Weber's time. The origins of today's museum lie in a sense of civic spirit that motivated a private initiative. Later, the State Association for the Protection of Local Culture in Saxony maintained the estate up to the turmoil of the Second World War. In 1948, a permanent memorial was established in the renovated house. It was considerably expanded in 1957 and has been the Carl-Maria-von-Weber-Museum of the Stadtmuseum Dresden since 1995. The book portrays Weber's life and work, as well as his relationship to Dresden, which the museum's visitors can experience first hand.

The Janus File - David Weber - Bog - Baen Books - Plusbog.dk

The fates of universes aren’t the only things time travel can impact. Sometimes the effect is a lot more mundane and closer to home. And when that happens, it’s up to the cops of Themis Division to make time turn out right. It was supposed to be a routine trip for the members of the Gordian Division, both human and AI: fly out to Saturn, inspect the construction of their latest time machines, then fly back. But when the division’s top scientist and chief engineer are killed in the same freak accident, suspicions of foul play run deep. Detective Isaac Cho is sent in to investigate, but he has more on his mind than just a new case. His superiors have saddled him with an exchange officer from the neighboring Admin—Special Agent Susan Cantrell—whose notion of proper “law enforcement” involves blowing up criminals first and skipping questions entirely. Despite his objections, Cho is stuck with an untested partner on a case that increasingly reeks of murder and conspiracy. The unlikely pair must work together to unravel this mystery, and soon they discover their unique combination of skills might just provide the edge they need. But nothing is ever simple where the Gordian Division is involved. Not even time itself.

A Call to Duty - David Weber - Bog - Baen Books - Plusbog.dk

NEW SERIES FROM NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLING AUTHORS. Book #1 in Manticore Ascendant, a new series set in David Weber's best-selling Honorverse, from multiple New York Times best seller David Weber and #1 New York Times best-selling author Timothy Zahn. FIRST TIME IN PAPERBACK. Growing up, Travis Uriah Long yearned for order in his life . . . some things his neglectful mother couldn’t or wouldn’t provide. So when Travis enlisted in the Royal Manticoran Navy, he thought he’d finally found the structure he’d always wanted so desperately. But life in the RMN isn’t exactly what he expected. Boot camp is rough and frustrating; his first ship assignment lax and disorderly; and with the Star Kingdom of Manticore still recovering from a devastating plague, the Navy is possibly on the edge of budgetary extinction. The Star Kingdom is a minor nation among the worlds of the Diaspora, its closest neighbors weeks or months away, with little in the way of resources. With only modest interstellar trade, no foreign contacts to speak of, a plague-ravaged economy to rebuild, and no enemies looming at the hyper limit, there are factions in Parliament who want nothing more than to scrap the Navy and shift its resources and manpower elsewhere. But those factions are mistaken. The universe is not a safe place. Travis Long is about to find that out. Praise for A Call to Duty : "This exciting book marks the first collaboration of two powerhouses . . . fans of both writers should be quite pleased with the result. Like Robert A. Heinlein and Orson Scott Card, Weber and Zahn are telling a story about a teenage character but writing for readers of all ages."– Booklist "A new series set in the universe of Weber's popular heroine Honor Harrington gets off to a solid start. . . . Cowriters Zahn and Weber do an excellent job alluding to events known to longtime fans. . . . [T]his astronautical adventure is filled with . . . intrigue and political drama."– Publishers Weekly About the Honor Harrington series: “Weber combines realistic, engaging characters with intelligent technological projection and a deep understanding of military bureaucracy in this long-awaited Honor Harrington novel…Fans of this venerable space opera will rejoice to see Honor back in action.”– Publishers Weekly “. . .everything you could want in a heroine …. Brilliant!”–Anne McCaffrey “Compelling combat combined with engaging characters for a great space opera adventure.”– Locus “Weber combines realistic, engaging characters with intelligent technological projection . . . Fans of this venerable space opera will rejoice . . .”– Publishers Weekly About Timothy Zahn: “Zahn keeps the story moving at a breakneck pace, maintaining excitement.”— Publishers Weekly "[Y]ou can count on Timothy Zahn for three things: clean, sparse prose; good pacing; and great action scenes. The first book in the Cobra War series hits all those marks in admirable style and makes for a quick, entertaining sci-fi novel." — Blogcritics “[ Conqueror’s Heritage ] is another finely wrought space adventure . . . [with] social, political and emotional complications, all of which Zahn treats with his usual skill.”— Booklist “Zahn paints every detail [in Angelmass ] with gleamy realism . . . scientific dialogue that streams with starship hardware and military trooper talk . . . immensely appealing.”— Kirkus Review

A Call to Arms - David Weber - Bog - Baen Books - Plusbog.dk

A Call to Arms - David Weber - Bog - Baen Books - Plusbog.dk

From multiple New York Times best-selling author David Weber and #1 New York Times best-selling author Timothy Zahn. A NEW ENTRY IN A BEST-SELLING SERIES. Book #2 in the Manticore Ascendant series, set in David Weber's Honorverse. This year we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Honor Harrington. Lieutenant Travis Long of the Royal Manticoran Navy is the sort of person who likes an orderly universe. One where people follow the rules. Unfortunately, he lives in the real universe. The good news is that Travis is one of those rare people who may like rules but has a talent for thinking outside them when everything starts coming apart. That talent has stood him—and the Star Kingdom—in good stead in the past, and it’s one reason he’s now a “mustang,” an ex-enlisted man who’s been given a commission as a King’s officer. The bad news is that two of the best ways of making enemies ever invented are insisting on enforcing the rules . . . and thinking outside them when other people don’t. But the one rule Travis Long absolutely can’t break is the one that says an officer in the Royal Navy does his duty, whatever the consequences. At the moment, there are powerful forces in the young Star Kingdom of Manticore’s Parliament which don’t think they need him. For that matter, they’re pretty sure they don’t need the Royal Manticoran Navy, either. After all, what does a sleepy little single-system star nation on the outer edge of the explored galaxy need with a navy? Unhappily for them, the edge of the explored galaxy can be a far more dangerous place than they think it is. They’re about to find out why they need the Navy . . . and how very, very fortunate they are that Travis Long is in it. About A Call to Arms : “The plotting is as solid as ever, with smaller scenes building to an explosive, action-packed crescendo, and the authors strike a nice balance between technical details of space flight and the human cost of war."— Publishers Weekly Praise for prequel A Call to Duty : “This exciting book marks the first collaboration of two powerhouses . . . fans of both writers should be quite pleased with the result. SWORD OF THE SOUTH - David Weber - Bog - Baen Books - Plusbog.dk

SWORD OF THE SOUTH - David Weber - Bog - Baen Books - Plusbog.dk

A NEW ENTRY IN THE NORFRESSA SERIES AND THE BIRTH OF A NEW HERO! Epic fantasy by 30-time New York Times and international best-selling author, David Weber, set within his Bahzell Bahnakson/War God universe. A swordsman who has been robbed of his past must confront an evil wizard with a world at stake. Know thyself. It's always good to know who you are, but sometimes that's a little difficult. Kenhodan has no last name, because he has no past . . . or not one he remembers, anyway. What he does have are a lot of scars and a lot of skills, some exhilarating and some terrifying, and a purpose. Now if he only knew where he'd gotten them and what that purpose was . . . Wencit of Rum, the most powerful wizard in the world, knows the answers to Kenhodan's questions, but he can't or won't share them with him. Except to inform him that he's a critical part of Wencit's millennium-long battle to protect Norfressa from conquest by dark sorcery. Bahzell Bahnakson, champion of Tomanak, doesn't know those answers and the War God isn't sharing them with him. Except to inform Bahzell that the final confrontation with the Dark Lords of fallen Kontovar is about to begin, and that somehow Kenhodan is one of the keys to its final outcome. Wulfra of Torfo doesn't know those answers, either, but she does know Wencit of Rum is her implacable foe and that Kenhodan is one of the weapons he intends to use against her . . . assuming she can't kill both of them first. But in the far northern port city of Belhadan, an eleven-year-old girl knows the answers to all of Kenhodan's questions. . . and dares not share them with anyone, even the ancient wild wizard who loves her more dearly than life itself. It's not easy to face the future when you can't even remember your own past, but if saving an entire world from evil sorcerers, demons, devils, and dark gods was easy, anyone could do it. About The Sword of the South : "Weber returns to his epic fantasy world last depicted in War Maid’s Choice . . . With the full pantheon of gods, wizards, elves, dwarves, and dark sorcery, this title is guaranteed to win the favor of Robert Jordan and Michael Sullivan enthusiasts. Designed as an entry point for first-time readers, it also is a great option for teens and adults." —Library Journal About David Weber's War Bahzell Bahnak series: "Irresistibly entertaining."– Publishers Weekly "Fun adventure full of noble steeds, fierce female fighters, dark sorcerers, serious swordplay, and plenty of tongue-in-cheek humor."– Locus About David Weber and the Honor Harrington series: “Weber combines realistic, engaging characters with intelligent technological projection and a deep understanding of military bureaucracy in this long-awaited Honor Harrington novel…Fans of this venerable space opera will rejoice to see Honor back in action.”–Publishers Weekly “. . .everything you could want in a heroine …. The Memory of All That - Katharine Weber - Bog - Random House USA Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Memory of All That - Katharine Weber - Bog - Random House USA Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Memory of All That is Katharine Weber’s memoir of her extraordinary family. Her maternal grandmother, Kay Swift, was known both for her own music (she was the first woman to compose the score to a hit Broadway show, Fine and Dandy ) and for her ten-year romance with George Gershwin. Their love affair began during Swift’s marriage to James Paul Warburg, the multitalented banker and economist who advised (and feuded with) FDR. Weber creates an intriguing and intimate group portrait of the renowned Warburg family, from her great-great-uncle, the eccentric art historian Aby Warburg, whose madness inspired modern theories of iconography, to her great-grandfather Paul M. Warburg, the architect of the Federal Reserve System whose unheeded warnings about the stock-market crash of 1929 made him “the Cassandra of Wall Street.” As she throws new light on her beloved grandmother’s life and many amours, Weber also considers the role the psychoanalyst Gregory Zilboorg played in her family history, along with the ways the Warburg family has been as celebrated for its accomplishments as it has been vilified over the years by countless conspiracy theorists (from Henry Ford to Louis Farrakhan), who labeled Paul Warburg the ringleader of the so-called international Jewish banking conspiracy. Her mother, Andrea Swift Warburg, married Sidney Kaufman, but their unlikely union, Weber believes, was a direct consequence of George Gershwin’s looming presence in the Warburg family. A notorious womanizer, Weber’s father was a peripatetic filmmaker who made propaganda and training films for the OSS during World War II before producing the first movie with smells, the regrettable flop that was AromaRama. He was as much an enigma to his daughter as he was to the FBI, which had him under surveillance for more than forty years, and even noted Katharine’s birth in a memo to J. Edgar Hoover.Colorful, evocative, insightful, and very funny, The Memory of All That is an enthralling look at a tremendously influential—and highly eccentric—family, as well as a consideration of how their stories, with their myriad layers of truth and fiction, have both provoked and influenced one of our most prodigiously gifted writers.
