Investigation/Design - Nicolas Nova - Bog - Haute ecole d'art et de design - Geneve - Plusbog.dk

While the overhaul of higher education linked to the Bologna process encouraged the development of design research in art schools, this interest pre-existed in design agencies which were quick to produce surveys in various forms. In this essay, Nicolas Nova synthesises the main specificities of this type of approach and demonstrates how it escapes the academic canon. Indeed, design research is an expanding field, which produces knowledge in a wide variety of forms: texts, drawings, prototypes, interfaces, etc. The author analyses the format of the survey as being at the centre of many approaches to design research – a survey that draws on the methods of social sciences and journalism, but is not confined to the disciplinary framework, gathering and re-appropriating notions from a wide range of fields. More than by a single method, it is by questions relating to specifically invented processes, devices and tools that these surveys in design set themselves apart from those in the social sciences. Thus, this research is often based on the creation of material objects, likely to shed light on phenomena, of which the author presents a series of recent and original examples. Nicolas Nova considers that these approaches to design research radiate beyond their chosen field. Indeed, they influence the “creative social sciences”, which seek to broaden their range of research and restitution processes and open the way to research in contemporary art, which is also in a booming phase.

Design as Art - Bruno Munari - Bog - Penguin Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

One of the last surviving members of the futurist generation, Bruno Munari''s Design as Art is an illustrated journey into the artistic possibilities of modern design translated by Patrick Creagh published as part of the ''Penguin on Design'' series in Penguin Modern Classics.''The designer of today re-establishes the long-lost contact between art and the public, between living people and art as a living thing''Bruno Munari was among the most inspirational designers of all time, described by Picasso as ''the new Leonardo''. Munari insisted that design be beautiful, functional and accessible, and this enlightening and highly entertaining book sets out his ideas about visual, graphic and industrial design and the role it plays in the objects we use everyday. Lamps, road signs, typography, posters, children''s books, advertising, cars and chairs - these are just some of the subjects to which he turns his illuminating gaze. How do we see the world around us? The Penguin on Design series includes the works of creative thinkers whose writings on art, design and the media have changed our vision forever.Bruno Munari (1907-1998), born in Milan, was the enfant terrible of Italian art and design for most of the twentieth century, contributing to many fields of both visual (paint, sculpture, film, industrial design, graphics) and non-visual arts (literature, poetry). He was twice awarded the Compasso d''Oro design prize for excellence in his field. If you enjoyed Design as Art , you might like John Berger''s Ways of Seeing , also available in Penguin Modern Classics.''One of the most influential designers of the twentieth century ... Munari has encouraged people to go beyond formal conventions and stereotypes by showing them how to widen their perceptual awareness'' International Herald Tribune

Graphic Design. 1890-Today - Jens Muller - Bog - Taschen GmbH - Plusbog.dk

Through the turbulent events of the last century-and-a-half, graphic design—with its vivid, neat synthesis of image and idea—has distilled the spirit of each age. It surrounds us every minute of the day, from minimalist packaging to colorful adverts, environmental graphics to sleek interfaces: graphic design is as much about reflecting society’s aspirations and values as it is about transmitting information. Now published as part of our popular Basic Art series, this vibrant compendium lays out the evolution of graphic design from its inception in the 1890s up until the present day. Using his sweeping knowledge of the field, author Jens Müller has curated hundreds of examples from across the globe, arranged by decade. Each chapter also includes thumbnails of significant movements and influential publications, plus concise biographies of design masterminds like Massimo Vignelli (New York subway wayfinding), Otl Aicher (Lufthansa identity), Paula Scher (Citibank identity), Milton Glaser (I Love New York), Louise Fili (packaging), and Stefan Sagmeister (handwritten posters). This succinct but authoritative collection reflects on the development of a creative field that is constantly changing and challenging itself. The design classics Müller has curated act as coordinates, helping to trace the incontrovertible influence of graphic design on our daily lives. It’s both a handy primer and an informed exploration of how graphic design shapes our choices, from the products we buy and the media we consume, to how we behave and think of ourselves.
