This paper studies the economic consequences of immigration for public finances in Denmark. Using new figures for the period 2004-2008, net transfers are calculated, and presented as an extension to the figures that already existed for the period 1991-2001. The net transfers are calculated from a marginal perspective, which means that the included public expenditures and incomes can be traced to each individual person in our sample. The study is therefore suited for analyzing the economic consequences if more/less people immigrate. A consistent pattern to emerge throughout is that net transfers from Western first- and second-generation immigrants to state funds are positive, while those from non-Western first- and second-generation immigrants are negative. The new calculations show that net transfers from non-Western first- and second-generation immigrants fell from DKK -12.8 billion in 2004 to DKK -9.1 billion in 2008, largely due to the improved employment situation in Denmark. The results also show, however, that the composition chosen of the group of non-Western immigrants has a significant effect on the calculation of net transfers, in that these transfers are reduced to DKK -2.2 billion if refugees are excluded from this group.

In cross-country poverty studies Denmark, like the other Nordic countries, stands out with low rates of poverty incidence and duration. The purpose in the present paper is to show that this is the net outcome of very different poverty profiles between natives and immigrants. We describe and analyse the annual incidence of poverty 1984-2007 separately for natives and for immigrants from Western and non-Western countries using panel data for the whole population. We further describe entry and exit rates relative to poverty and persistence of poverty for these three population groups. Finally, we calculate a set of indicators of income mobility and inequality for immigrant and native population groups.

Indefra rummer en rækker essays eller portrætter, bl.a. af 3 socialdemokratiske statsministre, Kampmann, Krag og Anker Jørgensen. Et par år før Anker Jørgensen døde, mødtes han og Ole Hyltoft ved et arrangement på Danmarks Radio. Bagefter hjalp Hyltoft den gangbesværede Anker Jørgensen ud på perronen. Da de tog afsked, vendte Anker sig om og sagde: - Jeg ved godt, du har meldt dig ud. Man skal blive i sit parti. Men det vil jeg ikke snakke mere om. Det ville være imidlertid mærkeligt, hvis ikke en række af bogens portrætter bærer præg af, at Hyltoft for snart mange år siden tog et opgør med socialdemokratiet og meldte sig ind i Dansk Folkeparti. Det har det toneangivende kultur-Danmark aldrig tilgivet ham. Det mest spændende portræt i bogen er nok af Danmarks kommunistiske partis første formand, Ernst Christiansen, der endte som radiorådsbureaukrat i DR. Uden sorte streger eller satire er bl.a. portrætterne af faderen, af modstandsmanden og af vennen Siegfried Lenz, og endelig rummer bogen et hyldestportræt af Danmarks første kulturminister Julius Bomholt. Ole Hyltoft, var ministersekretær for Julius Bomholt, en årrække journalist og kulturredaktør på det socialdemokratiske blad Aktuelt, i fire år næstformand for DR’s bestyrelse. Han er fortsat en af en af Danmarks flittigste kronikører.
