Politics, Culture And Identities In East Asia: Integration And Division - - Bog - World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd - Plusbog.dk

This edited book reflects the "yin-yang" of East Asia — the analogy of co-existing "hot and cold" trends in that region. To concentrate only on geopolitical competition and regional "hot spots" will exaggerate, if not misrepresent East Asia as a Hobbesian world. Nevertheless, geopolitical competition cannot be ignored because a failure of the balance of power and deterrence between China and the United States (and its allies) will destabilise the region. There are four "vectors" in the geopolitics of East Asia: China rising, the United States "rebalancing" to this region, Japan "normalising" as a nation-state and ASEAN emerging as a regional community. The interplay of these four "vectors" will set the trajectory of geopolitics in East Asia. Another focus of this volume is on the politics of identity. The distinctiveness, character and flavour of a group, real or imagined, can be "cool". "Cool" as in being charming and appealing transcends national boundaries. Plurality and diversity of identities and cultures in East Asia can be a celebration of life and humanity. However, xenophobic identities, often based on exclusive race, language, religion and hegemony, and its subsequent politicisation can rend a nation apart. Indeed, the affirmation of one's identity may be at the expense or denial of the identity of "the other". Similarly, the assertion and the intricacy of identity and nationalism in East Asia can also be problematic. However, a person or group can have multiple and different scales of identities. Indeed, identities can be fluid and situational.

Modern Physics And Technology For Undergraduates - Gennady P Berman - Bog - World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Modern Physics And Technology For Undergraduates - Gennady P Berman - Bog - World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd - Plusbog.dk

A huge chasm has developed between modern science and undergraduate education. The result of this chasm is that students who are graduating from college are unable to exploit the many opportunities offered by modern science and technology. Modern science and technology widely uses the methods of classical physics, but these modern applications are not reflected in the physics problems often suggested to students. Solving practical problems is a very effective way to inform students about contemporary science, to illustrate the important relationships between modern and classical physics, and to prepare them for future activity in the modern technological environment. The aim of this book is to try to bridge this chasm between modern science and technology and an undergraduate course in physics. The first part of the book gives an overview of "hot" directions in modern physics and technology. The second part includes a brief review of undergraduate physics, followed by problems which are related to those directions. These problems, which are based on some of the latest developments in science and technology, can be solved using the classical physics accessible in a standard undergraduate program. Where necessary, the problems have detailed solutions. The second edition of Modern Physics and Technology for Undergraduates includes six new subsections dealing with the most recent developments in science, and a fully updated and expanded list of problems.

Iter Physics - Sadruddin Benkadda - Bog - World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Iter Physics - Sadruddin Benkadda - Bog - World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The promise of a vast and clean source of thermal power drove physics research for over fifty years and has finally come to collimation with the international consortium led by the European Union and Japan, with an agreement from seven countries to build a definitive test of fusion power in ITER. It happened because scientists since the Manhattan project have envisioned controlled nuclear fusion in obtaining energy with no carbon dioxide emissions and no toxic nuclear waste products. This large toroidal magnetic confinement ITER machine is described from confinement process to advanced physics of plasma-wall interactions, where pulses erupt from core plasma blistering the machine walls. Emissions from the walls reduce the core temperature which must remain ten times hotter than the 15 million degree core solar temperature to maintain ITER fusion power. The huge temperature gradient from core to wall that drives intense plasma turbulence is described in detail. Also explained are the methods designed to limit the growth of small magnetic islands, the growth of edge localized plasma plumes and the solid state physics limits of the stainless steel walls of the confinement vessel from the burning plasma. Designs of the wall coatings and the special "exhaust pipe" for spent hot plasma are provided in two chapters. And the issues associated with high-energy neutrons — about 10 times higher than in fission reactions — and how they are managed in ITER, are detailed.

Dark Matter, Neutrinos, And Our Solar System - Nirmala Prakash - Bog - World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Dark Matter, Neutrinos, And Our Solar System - Nirmala Prakash - Bog - World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Dark Matter, Neutrinos, and Our Solar System is a unique enterprise that should be viewed as an important contribution to our understanding of dark matter, neutrinos and the solar system. It describes these issues in terms of links, between cosmology, particle and nuclear physics, as well as between cosmology, atmospheric and terrestrial physics. It studies the constituents of dark matter (classified as hot warm and cold) first in terms of their individual structures (baryonic and non-baryonic, massive and non-massive, interacting and non-interacting) and second, in terms of facilities available to detect these structures (large and small). Neutrinos (an important component of dark matter) are treated as a separate entity. A detailed study of these elusive (sub-atomic) particles is done, from the year 1913 when they were found as byproducts of beta decay — until the discovery in 2007 which confirmed that neutrino flavors were not more than three (as speculated by some). The last chapter of the book details the real-time stories about the “regions” that were not explored thus far, for lack of advanced technology. Their untold fascinating stories (which span up to 2010) are illustrated here datewise in full. The book concludes with the latest news that the Large Hadron Collider team at CERN has finally succeeded in producing 7 trillion electronic Volts of energy by creating head-on-collisions of protons and more protons (in search of God-particle). The energy produced was three times more than previous records.

Edu-renaissance: Notes From A Globetrotting Higher Educator - Da Hsuan Feng - Bog - World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Born in New Delhi, raised in Singapore, and educated "everywhere", including Asia, the United States, and Europe — Professor Feng Da Hsuan (冯达旋) is the epitome of a man who has worn many hats in both the East and West. From being the Vice President for Research and Economic Development of the University of Texas at Dallas, Advisor to the Vice Chairperson of the United States Congressional Armed Services Committee and Senior Vice President of Global Strategy, Development and Evaluation at National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan, to his current position as the Director of Global Affairs and Special Advisor to Rector, University of Macau, Professor Feng's wealth of experience has complemented his inquisitive mind, foresight, and forward-looking nature on education and its future, evident in his speeches, articles, and reviews from the last decade and a half. Edu-renaissance: Notes from a Globetrotting Higher Educator brings together 50 of these pieces and they cover a wide range of ever-relevant topics such as the value of higher education in society, the role Asian universities have in the world, and hot topics like university ranking. Professor Feng also shares his new ideas and insight on promising young universities and higher education in the 21st century. One example is his emphasis on how the promotion of liberal arts and interdisciplinary approaches are the way forward for higher education institutions in the 21st century. By relating these topics to countries such as Taiwan, Korea, India, China, the United States, Israel, and Russia, this volume is ideal for readers who are part of a global community concerned about one of the most important issues in the world today — education.

Hermes Experiment, The: A Personal Story - Richard Milner - Bog - World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Hermes Experiment, The: A Personal Story - Richard Milner - Bog - World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd - Plusbog.dk

This book describes the story of how a collaboration of several hundred physicists from Europe and North America formed in 1988 to design, construct, install, commission and operate, for the years 1995-2007 the technically innovative HERMES experiment at the DESY laboratory in Hamburg, Germany to study the spin structure of the fundamental structure of matter. The authors begin by introducing the fascinating world of subatomic physics and relate their personal story of how the HERMES experiment came about. Guided by the exciting idea to use a new type of target internal to an electron storage ring, the HERMES collaboration was born to realize this innovative experimental approach at the new HERA accelerator at DESY. The book describes the technical design of HERMES; the successful effort to secure the necessary funds to construct the experiment in different countries; the fabrication of the different components by the different HERMES institutes; and the story of the installation and commissioning of HERMES in the East Hall of HERA in the hot summer of 1995. Until 2007, when the operation of HERA ceased, the collider ran typically about 9 months per year continuously, during which HERMES data taking shifts were manned to ensure that data of the highest quality were acquired. The book describes the HERMES scientific results, their considerable impact, how HERMES shaped an entire generation of young people into scientific leaders, and ends with a description of the twenty-first century picture of the proton that has subsequently been developed. The authors played a leading role within the HERMES collaboration. They describe, using non-technical language, the various phases of the thirteen years of running, the social life in such an international collaboration, and their personal reminiscences over several decades.

Auditory Processing Of Temporal Fine Structure: Effects Of Age And Hearing Loss - Brian C J Moore - Bog - World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd -

Auditory Processing Of Temporal Fine Structure: Effects Of Age And Hearing Loss - Brian C J Moore - Bog - World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd -

The book is concerned with changes in the perception of sound that are associated with hearing loss and aging. Hearing loss affects about 7% of the population in developed countries, and the proportion is increasing as the average age of the population increases. The audiogram is the most widely used diagnostic tool in audiology clinics around the world. The audiogram involves measuring the threshold for detecting sounds of different frequencies. Sometimes the audiogram is the only diagnostic tool that is used. However, hearing problems are not completely characterized by the audiogram. Two individuals with similar audiograms may show very different abilities in the detection and discrimination of sounds at above-threshold levels. Also, a person may have hearing difficulties despite having an audiogram that is within the range conventionally considered as 'normal'. One factor that may influence the discrimination of sounds, especially the ability to understand speech in background sounds, is sensitivity to temporal fine structure (TFS).This monograph reviews the role played by TFS in masking, pitch perception, speech perception, and spatial hearing, and concludes that cues derived from TFS play an important role in all of these. Evidence is reviewed suggesting that cochlear hearing loss reduces the ability to use TFS cues. Also, the ability to use TFS declines with increasing age even when the audiogram remains normal. This provides a new dimension to the changes in hearing associated with aging, a topic that is currently of great interest in view of the increasing proportion of older people in the population. The study of the role of TFS in auditory processing has been a hot topic in recent years. While there have been many research papers on this topic in specialized journals, there has been no overall review that pulls together the different research findings and presents and interprets them within a coherent framework. This monograph fills this gap.
