Huie’s camera captures ABCs (American-born Chinese), FOAs (Fresh Off the Airplane), and a self-described “redneck” Chinese restaurant owner near the Okefenokee Swamp. Taken together the photographs reveal a complex portrait of the U.S. cultural landscape, and their dignified elegance invites a closer, deeper look. Accompanied by the personal reflections of both Wing and Tara Huie, the nearly one hundred spectacular photos tell a story that both mirrors and contradicts stereotypes of Asian Americans, ultimately questioning what it means to be ethnic and American in the twenty-first century. Wing Young Huie has received widespread acclaim for his works, including Lake Street USA, documenting the cultural landscape of his native Minnesota. The Collected letters of Sir Arthur Pinero was first published in 1974. Sir Arthur Pinero's letters, in the collection published in this volume, present a vivid, behind-the-scenes look at the theater in England in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Sir Arthur was one of the most important and influential playwrights of the English stage during his lifetime. These letters, 337 in number, most of which have not been published before, span a period of sixty years, from 1873, when Pinero began his career as an actor at the age of eighteen, to 1933, the year before his death. Pinero was totally absorbed with the theater, and his correspondence provides a record of his ideas about his own work and the contemporary theatrical climate. From his earlier years he gives us impressions of the famous actors and actresses of the period—Henry Irving, Ellen Terry, and the Bancrofts, who were his favorites—and he later acted with them, too. The letters trace well the growth of Pinero's work as a dramatist, and are especially valuable because he wrote little publicly on dramatic theory in general or on his own work in particular. They reveal a dramatist who knew exactly what he wanted in the theater and how he felt it ought to be realized on the stage. He devoted much time and discussion to the careful choosing of a cast and other aspects of production. The letters tell, with as well as reporting on the critical and public reception of his plays. The correspondence also demonstrates his involvement with the development of the native English drama in its own right, and includes forthright comments on Ibsen and on continental drama generally. Many of the letters are addressed to such notables as Henry James, Edmund Gosse, George Bernard Shaw, Henry Irving, and Sir George Alexander, all major theatrical figures at the turn of the century.

Maurice Blanchot emerged after World War II as a key figure in the literary world, though he was known by some of his contemporaries in France for his prior involvement in far-rightist politics. How did this happen? Why have literary critics, as in the cases of Martin Heidegger and Paul de Man, chosen to ignore or suppress Blanchot's right-wing interwar and wartime writings, focusing instead on his postwar production? Scandal and Aftereffect provides an enlightening and provocative examination of these questions, as Steven Ungar looks at 100 articles published under Blanchot's signature between 1932 and 1937 in such right-wing publications as Combat, Le Rempart, and l'Insurgé. Using the concept of the "aftereffect" (developed in psychoanalysis to link the shock of disclosure to problems of repression), Ungar expands his study of Blanchot's writings into a broader analyses of cultural, political, and historical amnesia in an attempt to resolve the following questions: How and when does critical understanding of the past develop when control over the memory of a specific period is contested among those who lived it and those whose access to it depends on the accounts of others? Rediscovering the Ku Klux Klan as a national movement in the 1920sIn 1915, forty years after the original Ku Klux Klan disbanded, a former farmer, circuit preacher, and university lecturer named Colonel William Joseph Simmons revived the secret society. By the early 1920s the KKK had been transformed into a national movement with millions of dues-paying members and chapters in all of the nation’s forty-eight states. And unlike the Reconstruction-era society, the Klan in the 1920s exerted its influence far beyond the South. In The Rise of the Ku Klux Klan, Rory McVeigh provides a revealing analysis of the broad social agenda of 1920s-era KKK, showing that although the organization continued to promote white supremacy, it also addressed a surprisingly wide range of social and economic issues, targeting immigrants and, particularly, Catholics, as well as African Americans, as dangers to American society. In sharp contrast to earlier studies of the KKK, which focus on the local or regional level, McVeigh treats the Klan as it saw itself—as a national organization concerned with national issues. Drawing on extensive research into the Klan’s national publication, the Imperial Night-Hawk, he traces the ways in which Klan leaders interpreted national issues and how they attempted—and finally failed—to influence national politics. In Everyone Had Cameras, Richard Steven Street provides a comprehensive history of the significant presence of California farmworkers in the visual culture of America. Street’s account spans 150 years and sheds a new perspective on some of America’s photographic masters, such as Carleton E. Watkins, Ansel Adams, and Dorothea Lange, and brings to light heretofore unknown and unheralded work by perceptive amateurs, socially committed journeymen, digital documentarians, commercial propagandists, and left-wing critics. Through their artistry, these figures powerfully revealed—and at times obscured—the human cost of industrial agriculture and cheap food.
