Wall Street and the Fruited Plain delves deep into the parody known today as the "Gilded Age". In the early years of the period, the nation underwent the wrenching challenge of Reconstruction, nominally resolved in the compromise of 1877. In the Gilded Age, America expanded both internally and externally. The frontier moved from Kansas to California. Trappers, miners, cattlemen, and—finally-homesteaders, with the help of a burgeoning railroad network, fanned out across the central plains and the western plateaus. Wall Street dominated not only the economic and social life of the country, but the politics as well. A series of lackluster presidents between Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt facilitated this dominion and by the end of Roosevelt''s first Administration, America had become an adolescent headliner on the world stage.

Church growth in metropolitan communities motivated a short study concerning the pastoral care and counseling of immigrants, specifically Black Caribbean congregants in large/mega congregations. Culture, denomination history, and interpretations of scripture enter into the dynamics of defining not only the pastoral office of leaders but their perception of “care.” The phenomenological “cycle” of care is said to exist as an exchange happens between caregivers and care receivers. Such an exploration of three congregations opened up rare concepts of the psycho-social, and spiritual nature that guide interpersonal relationships of family systems across cultures. Large/mega congregations desire women’s as well as men’s style of nurturing and of fellowship that form the characteristics of a sharing, caring congregation. The study implicated a need for more comprehensive interdisciplinary teaching methods to train church leaders and clergy. It signals for an approach in practical theology to develop curricula for spiritual health of cultural plurality in congregations and community.

The economic recession and the rising healthcare costs experienced by many states in the U.S. is leading us towards the enactment of legislation that will reform the way that healthcare is provided and paid for within the individual states. TennCare was developed in Tennessee as a bold healthcare reform strategy that would simultaneously contain rapidly rising Medicaid costs while expanding insurance for a large, uninsured Tennessee population. The implementation of TennCare in January 1994 instituted the move of Tennessee''s Medicaid patients into managed care health plans. This study describes the design, rationale, implementation strategy, and issues of the reform program, as well as offering in depth insight regarding the effects of the reform strategy on disproportionate share hospitals, i.e. hospitals that serve a large portion of Medicaid and uninsured patients. Data spanning ten years of pre- and post-Tenncare were analyzed to determine the effects of TennCare on the hospitals. Dr. Ogbonna provides a template for dealing with policy, managerial, and administrative issues of rising healthcare costs in Tennessee and the nation in general.

For some time there has been no direct critique of Marx''s ideas from those who value the position he most harshly attacked, bourgeois capitalism. The few who did criticize Marx were economists such as Thomas Sowell, Eugen Böhm-Bawerk, and Ludwig von Mises. Others attacked Marx''s ideas, but did not actually defend the concept of capitalism. In 1987, shortly before the fall of the Soviet Union, David Conway published his Farewell to Marx, which offered a philosophical critique of Marx. This work, however, developed, in part, from a position that uncritically embraces economism, or what the author calls the "homo economicus conception of human life." In Revisting Marxism, Tibor Machan contrasts Marx''s historicist collectivism with a neo-Aristotelian individualism as presented by, among others, David L. Norton and Ayn Rand. It criticizes Marxism based on this position, the one he most directly disparaged. Also included in this volume is an exchange between the author and the late Sidney Hook, perhaps the most sympathetic social democratic champion of Marx''s ideas.
