An essential dimension of why one becomes an immigrant is based on a quest for identities - who one is, whom one wants to be, and how one wants to live. There is much in common between immigrants of the past and immigrants today in terms of what they seek through diasporic life. However, one key difference relates to how they express the processes of searching for their identities. This book illuminates the ways in which Korean immigrants in Australia express their identities through autobiographies, novels, church websites, and popular weekly magazines. Korean Diaspora and Media in Australia also examines the role of the Korean immigrant church in contributing to the formation of transnational identities. Han''s in-depth analysis is informed by the concepts of reflexivity and internal conversation from a tradition of critical realism. Internal conversation is enabled through human reflexivity (the regular application of mental ability) and is the process for individual agents to work out their best reactions to social conditions. Han carefully explains this process and thoughtfully applies it to the Korean community''s search for identities in Australia.

Dancing with the Gods: Essays in Ga Ritual explores cosmological concepts and ritual actions of the Ga people of southeastern Ghana through case studies of calendrical agricultural rites, social status transition rites, and redressive rites. Based on fieldwork in the 1960s, the essays present descriptive analyses of verbal and non-verbal ritual action. While verbal ritual actions specify ideas pertinent to a particular rite, non-verbal ritual actions express more general concepts. Kilson’s analyses show how the same motifs of non-verbal ritual action recur in sacred and secular Ga rites. Whenever and wherever such motifs occur, they convey the same basic underlying Ga concepts, thereby creating a unified conceptual network of belief that is the foundation of the Ga ritual system. This book presents an analysis of female sexuality in the literary texts of two Hispanic feminist writers: Cristina Escofet and Isabel Allende. Both writers create alternative realities and emphasize the use of subconscious knowledge to help us understand sexuality and to enable us to make changes in our unjust hierarchical world. In addition to deconstructing misogynist archetypes of Eve, Escofet and Allende explore the figure of Adam''s sexually active ex-partner Lillith, who has typically been portrayed as the negative Other. For generations the she-devil myth which surrounds her has resurfaced in the media, where she assumes the roles of innumerable evil female characters. Alongside Eve and Lillith, black and indigenous characters express dissent by retelling their stories in words and performance. These stories weave new ways of understanding female sexuality by reclaiming female divinities or heroines.
