Operating in all weathers, invariably at night, often at low level and usually without fighter escort, Allied ‘Special Duties’ (SD) squadrons and units played a vital role in the Second World War. By their very nature, these operations went unreported in wartime and for considerable time thereafter, but their importance in prosecuting the war of resistance in Occupied Europe was immense. Emerging from a time of rudimentary communications and transport, dedicated air units had been established by 1939 to fly agents into enemy territory, but their aircraft were hand-me-downs and the SD was considered a poor third to fighter and bomber operations. However, the tasks undertaken by these men and their aircraft were often more hazardous and demanding than any other type of wartime flying: for every SOS, SIS or OSS agent who lost their life in the field, at least one RAF or USAAF airman was killed while flying SD operations. Here, David Oliver examines the exploits of British, Commonwealth, American, Free European, Soviet, German, Italian and Japanese airmen and units, supported by first-hand accounts and archive photographs.

The River Calder rises in the Pennines north of Todmorden and flows to Sowerby Bridge and Salterhebble, where it receives the Hebble Brook. The river then flows through Elland, Brighouse, Mirfield and Dewsbury before reaching the Aire Calder Navigation at Wakefield. The river was made navigable in the 1770s and soon after, with the construction of the Rochdale, Huddersfield and Huddersfield Narrow canals, became part of the Mersey-Humber trade routes. Trade was brisk for many years but by the 1940s the canal was in decline; the Halifax branch was closed and surrounding canals abandoned. However, commecial traffic on the navigation soldiered on till 1981, when shipments to Thornhill Power Station ceased. Illustrated within the pages of the Calder Hebble Navigation are over 200 images of canal boats (both horse-drawn and motor-powered), items of canal furniture and activity on the navigation''s many wharfs.

When Jack the Ripper first prowled the streets of London, an evening newspaper commented that his crimes were as ghastly as those committed by Eliza Grimwood’s murderer fifty years earlier. Hers is arguably the most infamous and brutal of all nineteenth-century London killings. Eliza was a high-class prostitute, and on 26 May 1838, following an evening at the theatre, she brought a ‘client’ back to her home in Waterloo Road. The morning after, she was found with her throat cut and her abdomen viciously ‘ripped’. The client was nowhere to be seen. The ensuing murder investigation was convoluted, with suspects ranging from an alcoholic bricklayer to a royal duke. Londoners from all walks of life followed the story with a horror and fascination – among them Charles Dickens, who took inspiration from Eliza’s death when he wrote the murder of Nancy in Oliver Twist. Despite this feverish interest, the case was left unsolved, becoming the subject of ‘penny dreadfuls’ and urban legend. Unusually for a crime of this early period, the diary of the police officer leading the investigation has been preserved for posterity, and Jan Bondeson takes full advantage of this unique access to a Victorian murder inquiry. Skilfully dissecting what evidence remains, he links this murder with a series of other opportunist early Victorian slayings, and, in putting forward a credible new suspect, concludes that the Ripper of Waterloo Road was, in fact, a serial killer claiming as many as four victims.
