In this book, Omar Dahbour develops the idea of ecosystem sovereignty, calling for a reinterpretation of some essential concepts in political philosophy, including territoriality, self-determination, peoplehood, and sovereignty, in order to make the case for peoples’ rights to protect and maintain their natural environments. In doing so, he theorizes current and historical struggles against resource extractions and land grabs, especially by food sovereignty and indigenous rights movements. The basic idea of ecosovereignty is that peoples living in relation to particular ecosystems have a collective right to ultimate authority over those systems and the resources they contain—provided they manage them sustainably. Dahbour argues that this authority has a legitimacy that overrides that of larger states, at least with regard to matters of environmental management. Ecosovereignty claims may strengthen challenges by peoples to states and corporations seeking to control and transform lands and waters for development, against the wishes of their inhabitants. Dahbour hopes the idea will provide a powerful tool for halting extractivism and ecocide, along with the extreme violence that these processes use against farming, indigenous peoples, and nature. Role Theory and Mexico’s Foreign Policy examines why Mexico has an unusual foreign policy for a middle-power country. Using a series of case studies to show how role conflict has operated in Mexico’s foreign policy, Omar Loera-González studies three specific settings where Mexico could have displayed middle-power behaviour. First, he analyses Mexico’s controversial membership and performance in the Iraq crisis within the Security Council of the United Nations from 2002 to 2003. This book is the first detailed study of the causes of de-radicalization in armed Islamist movements. It is based on frontline research that includes interviews with Jihadist leaders, mid-ranking commanders, and young sympathizers, as well as former security and intelligence officers and state officials. Additionally, it is also the first book to analyze the particular conditions under which successful de-radicalization can take place. The current literature on Islamist movements attempts to explain two principal issues: their support of violence (radicalization) and their changing attitudes towards democracy and democratization (moderation). However, the reasons behind renouncing (behavioural de-radicalization) and de-legitimizing (ideological de-radicalization) violence have not been evaluated to date. The author provides an in-depth analysis of the de-radicalization processes of the Egyptian Muslim Brothers (1951-73), former allies of al-Qa''ida, such as al-Gama''a al-Islammiyya (Islamic Group of Egypt, 1997-2002) and al-Jihad Organization (2007- present), as well as of Algerian Islamist groups (1997-2000). The book also analyzes cases of de-radicalization failure. The two questions that the book highlights and attempts to answer are Why? and How? For example, why do radical Islamist militants revise their ideologies, strategies and objectives and initiate a de-radicalization process; and what are the necessary conditions behind successful de-radicalization? De-radicalization of Jihadists shows how a combination of charismatic leadership, state repression, social interactions and selective inducements can ultimately lead jihadists to abandon ''jihad'' and de-legitimize violence. This interdisciplinary book explores the Northern Ireland conflict through a human rights framework. The book examines the conflict from the creation of the Northern Ireland state in 1921 to 2014. This timeframe allows an analysis of how human rights impacted upon the conflict in its broadest understanding (i.e. the pre-violent conflict, the violent conflict and the post-violent conflict phases). Furthermore, it allows for a better understanding of how the various stages of the conflict impacted upon how human rights are understood in Northern Ireland today. The study’s main findings are that: (i) human rights had a significant impact on the development of the conflict; (ii) human rights violations were both underlying causes and direct causes of the descent into violence; (iii) the conflict coloured the view of human rights held by the main political actors; and (iv) human rights continue to be partially understood through the prism of the conflict. This study details the formation of a populist alliance by the Panamanian military in order to legitimize its leadership and restructure the rules of the political process. Along with the move for popular support, the Torrijos regime introduced an economic strategy based on export-oriented industrialization. The shift toward such policies by General Omar Torrijos Herrera, whose ideologies and political strategies were “neither the left nor the right,” bewildered and confused many in Panama and the United States, especially groups accustomed to having their vested interests coincide with those of the Panamanian military. The lessons drawn from this study illustrate an alternative to exclusionary and repressive military regimes in Central America.
