Advances in Non-Linear Modeling for Speech Processing - Raghunath S. Holambe - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Advances in Non-Linear Modeling for Speech Processing includes advanced topics in non-linear estimation and modeling techniques along with their applications to speaker recognition. Non-linear aeroacoustic modeling approach is used to estimate the important fine-structure speech events, which are not revealed by the short time Fourier transform (STFT). This aeroacostic modeling approach provides the impetus for the high resolution Teager energy operator (TEO). This operator is characterized by a time resolution that can track rapid signal energy changes within a glottal cycle. The cepstral features like linear prediction cepstral coefficients (LPCC) and mel frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) are computed from the magnitude spectrum of the speech frame and the phase spectra is neglected. To overcome the problem of neglecting the phase spectra, the speech production system can be represented as an amplitude modulation-frequency modulation (AM-FM) model. To demodulate the speech signal, to estimation the amplitude envelope and instantaneous frequency components, the energy separation algorithm (ESA) and the Hilbert transform demodulation (HTD) algorithm are discussed. Different features derived using above non-linear modeling techniques are used to develop a speaker identification system. Finally, it is shown that, the fusion of speech production and speech perception mechanisms can lead to a robust feature set.

Switching in Semiconductor Diodes - Y. R. Nosov - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Switching in Semiconductor Diodes - Y. R. Nosov - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

It gives me great pleasure to learn that this book, whose ori gin owes much to the work of American scientists and engineers on semiconductor technology, will reach American and other English speaking readers. I am grateful to Plenum Publishing Corporation for arranging the American edition of this book and to Mr. Albin Tybulewicz for his translation, September 5, 1968 Yu. R. Nosov v Preface to the Russian Edition One of the most important applications of semiconductor diodes is their use in electronic pulse circuits. The response of these diodes under switching conditions is governed by the phenomena of accumulation and dispersal of non equlibrium carriers, which are also observed in other p-n junction devices. It was found in the late 1940''s that when point-contact ger manium diodes were used in circuits through which short (several tenths of a microsecond) electrical pulses were being passed, the 1 effective reverse resistance of these diodes decreased considerably below the static value. Further studies showed that when a diode was switched rapidly from the forward to the reverse direction, an anomalously large reverse current flowed for some time. In view of the importance of this phenomenon in the efforts to reduce the response time of pulse circuits, many investigations of the phenomenon were carried out and these investigations pro vided the basis of a theory of transient processes in semiconductor diodes.

Contemporary Methods for Speech Parameterization - Todor Ganchev - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Contemporary Methods for Speech Parameterization - Todor Ganchev - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Contemporary Methods for Speech Parameterization offers a general view of short-time cepstrum-based speech parameterization and provides a common ground for further in-depth studies on the subject. Specifically, it offers a comprehensive description, comparative analysis, and empirical performance evaluation of eleven contemporary speech parameterization methods, which compute short-time cepstrum-based speech features. Among these are five discrete wavelet packet transform (DWPT)-based, six discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-based speech features and some of their variants which have been used on the speech recognition, speaker recognition, and other related speech processing tasks. The main similarities and differences in their computation are discussed and empirical results from performance evaluation in common experimental conditions are presented. The recognition accuracy obtained on the monophone recognition, continuous speech recognition and speaker recognition tasks is contrasted against the one obtained for the well-known and widely used Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC). It is shown that many of these methods lead to speech features that do offer competitive performance on a certain speech processing setup when compared to the venerable MFCC. The last does not target the promotion of certain speech features but instead aims to enhance the common understanding about the advantages and disadvantages of the various speech parameterization techniques available today and to provide the basis for selection of an appropriate speech parameterization in each particular case.

Getting the Most out of Your Mentoring Relationships - Donna J. Dean - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Mentorship practice has been part of the human experience since the Golden Age of Greece. Engaging with a mentor as a way to learn and achieve one''s full potential is an ancient and respected practice. And, it has been the keystone on which the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) has built its program over the past three decades. Trailblazers, such as Dr. Estelle Ramey and Dr. Anne Briscoe, experienced first-hand the isolation of women in the country''s male-dominated scientific establishment and worked to build an organization that would promote women through mentoring relationships. Dr. Ramey, who earned her degree in p- siology and biophysics and taught at Georgetown Medical School, was a we- known feminist speaker and writer. Noted for her great wit, she once quipped, ''''I was startled to learn that ovarian hormones are toxic to brain cells. '''' Throughout her career, Dr. Ramey decried sexist comments and situations that treated women as less than fully human. She felt very strongly about how little, if anything, it took to extend a helping hand to someone else in a way that could really make a huge difference in her life. As she wrote in her book called Letters to our Grandchildren, ''''If I could leave you with any advice, it would be to speak words of caring not only to those closest to you, but to all the hungry ears you encounter on your journey through a cold world.

The Social and Economic Impact of New Technology 1978-84: A Select Bibliography - - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

The Social and Economic Impact of New Technology 1978-84: A Select Bibliography - - Bog - Springer-Verlag New York Inc. - Plusbog.dk

Silicon chip technology; microprocessor technology; information technology; or quite simply new technology. These are some of the names representing the microelectronics revolution depending upon the audience being addressed by speaker or writer. No previous new industrial development has caused such widespread publicity and discussion amongst users and researchers as the new technology. Concern is being expressed about the effects of new technology on employment, job satisfaction, social life, leisure activities and the economics of commerce and industry. The late 70s saw many doom-laden predictions of those effects but by 1983 both management and trade unions were taking a more objective view of the social and economic impacts, and many correspondents now see the new technology as a means of opening up new industries and overcoming the effects of world recessions. The "chip" has involved the factory floor, the office, the supermarket and the home. Electronic funds transfer, electronic shopping, microelectronic domestic appliances, word processors and microprocessor-controlled machinery mean that the new technology has pervaded all aspects of social and economic life, and the developed countries are now coming to accept it as part of society as a whole. Inevitably the flood of literature on the social and economic impacts of new technology has been overwhelming. Unfortunately the quality of information and arguments propagated at conferences, in journal papers and research reports has indicated that there has been little quantifiable evidence available on the effects of these impacts.
