Spain and the Wider World since 2000 - Morten Heiberg - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Spain and the Wider World since 2000 - Morten Heiberg - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

This book offers the first comprehensive study of Spanish foreign policy since 2000. Based on privileged access to some of Spain''s most important foreign policy actors - including Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and Foreign Minister Miguel Ángel Moratinos - the book offers an insider account of how Spanish foreign policy was shaped within the context of international diplomacy. It offers crucial new insights into the foreign policy of the PSOE governments (Spanish Socialist Workers'' Party, 2004 to 2011). The volume considers the changes on the international stage since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, showing how regional conflicts and tensions affected the policy agendas of the West. To increase security and prosperity at home, the 2004 Spanish socialist government reasoned that they could no longer rely exclusively on unilateral measures, old Cold War alliances or a ''Spain-first'' approach. Against the backdrop of this changing world, the book explores the concept of ''effective multilateralism'' put forward by the PSOE, in which Spain abandoned its hitherto unconditional support for the US and instead engaged in a series of multilateral collaborations with regions around the world. Above all, this study seeks to provide a new international history of contemporary Spain, demonstrating how domestic changes intersected with global transformations, and put forward the argument that diplomacy works.

Waveguide Propagation of Nonlinear Waves - Sergey Leble - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Waveguide Propagation of Nonlinear Waves - Sergey Leble - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

This book addresses the peculiarities of nonlinear wave propagation in waveguides and explains how the stratification depends on the waveguide and confinement. An example of this is an optical fibre that does not allow light to pass through a density jump. The book also discusses propagation in the nonlinear regime, which is characterized by a specific waveform and amplitude, to demonstrate so-called solitonic behaviour. In this case, a wave may be strongly localized, and propagates with a weak change in shape. In the waveguide case there are additional contributions of dispersion originating from boundary or asymptotic conditions. Offering concrete guidance on solving application problems, this essentially (more than twice) expanded second edition includes various aspects of guided propagation of nonlinear waves as well as new topics like solitonic behaviour of one-mode and multi-mode excitation and propagation and plasma waveguides, propagation peculiarities of electromagnetic waves in metamaterials, new types of dispersion, dissipation, electromagnetic waveguides, planetary waves and plasma waves interaction. The key feature of the solitonic behaviour is based on Coupled KdV and Coupled NS systems. The systems are derived in this book and solved numerically with the proof of stability and convergence. The domain wall dynamics of ferromagnetic microwaveguides and Bloch waves in nano-waveguides are also included with some problems of magnetic momentum and charge transport.

The Pathway to Publishing: A Guide to Quantitative Writing in the Health Sciences - Stephen Luby - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

The Pathway to Publishing: A Guide to Quantitative Writing in the Health Sciences - Stephen Luby - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Writing manuscripts is central to the advance of scientific knowledge. For an early career aspiring scientist, writing first author manuscripts is an opportunity to develop critical skills and to credential their expertise. Writing manuscripts, however, is difficult, doubly so for scientists who use English as a second language. Many science students intentionally avoid a writing-intensive curriculum. Careful, thorough reviews of draft manuscripts are difficult to secure, and experienced scientific supervisors face more demands on their time than they have time available. Weak draft manuscripts discourage supervising scientists investing the time to coach revisions. It is easier for experienced scientists to ignore the request, or to simply rewrite the article. Early career scientists are motivated to address these barriers but specific advice is difficult to find, and much of this advice is behind a pay wall. This essential, open access text presents writing lessons organized as common errors, providing students and early-career researchers with an efficient way to learn, and mentors with a quick-reference guide to reviewing. Error descriptions include specific examples drawn from real-world experiences of other early-career writers, and suggestions for how to successfully address and avoid these in the future. Versions of this book have been used by Stanford University, UC Davis, Johns Hopkins, and numerous international institutions and organizations for over a decade.

Energy for the Skin - - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Energy for the Skin - - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Energy on the skin has revolutionized medicine: in the last 25 years laser and IPL devices have made completely new medical treatment concepts possible, with considerable therapeutic success. The rapid technical advances in energy-based instruments require continuous training for attending physicians. This book presents all the available energy-based systems for the treatment of cutaneous diseases, including a wide range of laser applications, IPL and energy-based devices such as the lightning lamp-pumped pulsed dye laser, solid state lasers like neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd YAG) laser, quality switched ruby laser, erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser (YAG) and CO2 laser, as well as radio frequency and high-intensity focused ultra sound, photodynamic therapy and more. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com) and a subsequent human revision by original chapter authors, editor andpublisher was perfomed to fine-tune and update the content. After discussing the history of the laser, the first part of the book focuses on laser therapy in dermatology and aesthetic medicine, including side effects, complications and treatment errors. It also examines the qualitative standards and legal aspects, from therapists’ qualifications to patient education and the maintenance of the equipment. In addition, it addresses safe and effective energy applications for hemangiomas, skin cancer precursors and rosacea. The book also features chapters on patient preparation, medical history and photographic follow up, as well as skin analysis, cooling techniques, light protection and the maintenance of laser devices. Further, it discusses cosmetic topics such as tattoo removal, photo hair removal, scars and stretch marks, hair transplant, body contouring, hyperhidrosis, and aesthetic plasma medicine. Written by leading international exerts, each contribution includes suggestions for further reading, making the book a valuable resource for beginners and experts alike. At the same time, its easy-to-follow, didactic style means that it is also suitable for university courses and seminars.

Protest Publics - - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Protest Publics - - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

This book examines the waves of protest that broke out in the 2010s as the collective actions of self-organized publics. Drawing on theories of publics/counter-publics and developing an analytical framework that allows the comparison of different country cases, this volume explores the transformation from spontaneous demonstrations, driven by civic outrage against injustice to more institutionalized forms of protest. Presenting comparative research and case studies on e.g. the Portuguese Generation in Trouble, the Arab Spring in Northern Africa, or Occupy Wall Street in the USA, the authors explore how protest publics emerge and evolve in very different ways - from creating many small citizen groups focused on particular projects to more articulated political agendas for both state and society. These protest publics have provoked and legitimized concrete socio-political changes, altering the balance of power in specific political spaces, and in some cases generating profound moments of instability that can lead both to revolutions and to peaceful transformations of political institutions. The authors argue that this recent wave of protests is driven by a new type of social actor: self-organized publics. In some cases these protest publics can lead to democratic reform and redistributive policies, while in others they can produce destabilization, ethnic and nationalist populism, and authoritarianism. This book will help readers to better understand how seemingly spontaneous public events and protests evolve into meaningful, well-structured collective action and come to shape political processes in diverse regions of the globe.
