Flagellates in Freshwater Ecosystems - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Flagellates in Freshwater Ecosystems - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

It is not so very long ago that botanical concensus abandoned the distinction that was drawn between Algae and Flagellata, the latter having been regarded by zoologists as a group of the Protozoa. Even today some colourless flagellates may find themselves occupying different locations in contrasting taxonomic schemes. However, modern developments in ecology have placed greater emphasis on functional attributes of organisms, and hydro biologists have certainly been in the forefront of such changes. Thus we find that flagellates are again the subject of controversy, not so much over their taxonomic position as over their functional position - their role in aquatic ecosystems. At the 22nd Congress of the International Association of Theoretical and Applied Limnology in Lyon, France in August 1983, we conceived the idea of a meeting to discuss ''Flagellates in Freshwater Ecosystems''. This idea was approved by the committee of SIL and we arranged for the meeting to take place during June 1986 at Lammi Biological Station (University of Helsinki) in Finland. Participants from nine countries enjoyed outstanding hospitality from the staff at the Station during a week of lectures, excursions and discussion ses sions. On behalf of the participants we express our thanks for the generous sponsorship received from the Maj and Tor Nessling Foundation, the Academy of Finland, the Finnish Ministry of Education, Lammi Biological Station and the Finnish Limnological Society.

International Practice in Cardiothoracic Surgery - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

International Practice in Cardiothoracic Surgery - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

urgery has been impressive during the past two decades. Surgeons from many countries have accumulated outstanding experiences which are both unique and varied. With the aim of promoting international exchange of scientific and technical accomplishments in cardiothoracic surgery, we began in 1982 to consult with a number of leading cardiothoracic surgeons about compiling a book that would permit them to present their expertise. Through the untiring efforts of all the authors and sectional editors during the past three years, International Practice in Cardiothoracic Surgery is now published, both in an English language edition and in a Chinese language edition. There are one hundred and eleven chapters in eight sections, contributed by over a hundred authors from Brazil, Canada, China, England, France, Germany, Finland, Japan, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States of America. This book is not intended to be a textbook but a compilation of current views and tech nics from cardiothoracic surgeons with unique experiences who have made significant con tributions in certain subjects. No uniformity in format was requested. A certain amount f overlapping and even conflicting ideas are purposely collected to express the interna tional character of the book. We appreciate the warm support, cooperation, and hard work of all the authors, trans lators, sectional editors, and secretarial workers in completing the book.

Preparation for MRCP Part II - Paul Siklos - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Preparation for MRCP Part II - Paul Siklos - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

This book is directed towards post-graduates who have passed Part I of the examination for Membership of the Royal College of Physicians and are preparing for Part II. However, it is hoped that physicians at all stages of their careers will find some parts that interest them. Most of the material has appeared in the Hospital Update series, ''Preparation for MRCP'', but this has been modified and expanded; many useful points arising from correspondence relating to the series have been included, and the authors would like to express their thanks to those who have written. It is not intended that this should be used as a work of reference, although there is detailed discussion of some subjects. Only the written part of the examination is dealt with in detail, but the introduction contains hints on tackling the clinical sections which the authors hope the candidates will find valuable. There is, however, no substitute for clinical practice under supervision. The questions in Vll PREFACE the written section of the examination require short answers so that marking may be easy and objective. This book contains questions similar to those that may be encountered in the examination, but the answers have been expanded as a basis for discussion. It is hoped that this will encourage the candidate to read around the subjects covered, and the authors recommend that the questions are used as a basis for group discussion, as answers other than those in the text may be considered.

The Paris Lectures - Edmund Husserl - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

The Paris Lectures - Edmund Husserl - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

The present translation is based on the German original, which has been edited by Professor S. Strasser and published. in Husse1'' liana-Edmund H usserl, Gesammelte We1''ke. A uj Grund des N ach lasses ve1''ojjentlicht vom Husse1''l-Archiv (Louvain) unlet'' Leitung vonH. L. Van Breda, vol. I (The Hague: Martinus Nijhoff, 1950), pages 3-39. Both my translation of the Paris Lectures and the Introductory Essay had been completed before the appearance of two sub stantial scholarly achievements: Dorion Cairns'' faithful trans lation of Husserl''s difficult Cartesianische Meditationen and Herbert Spiegelberg''s detailed and comprehensive two-volume work, The Phenomenological Movement. I have since collated most carefully Professor Cairns'' translation with my own in those passages which are similar in the German of the Carte sianische Meditationen and the Pariser Vorlriige. As a result I was able to make several useful changes. Also, I have incorporated some material which had been unavailable to me prior to the publication of Professor Spiegelberg''s work. However, I did not have the benefit of Dorion Cairns'' Guide /0''1'' Reading Busserl, which, at this writing, is not yet available in print. I would like to express my gratitude to the publishers as well as to Dr. Herman Leo Van Breda, Rudolf Boehm, and to the Husserl Archives for their patience, encouragement, help, and suggestions. The Concept of Probability in Psychological Experiments - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

The Concept of Probability in Psychological Experiments - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

1. BACKGROUND The last twenty-five years have seen a large amount of psychological research in the area of behavioral decision theory. It followed the major breakthrough of decision theory that came with von Neumann and Morgenstern''s Theory of Games and Economic Behavior in 1944. The key concepts are probability as a measure of uncertainty and utility as a measure of value and risk. The theory prescribes, given some behavioral axioms, that alternatives should be ranked in accordance with their expected utilities. Psychologists became interested in studying how people''s decision behavior agreed with what was prescribed by the theory. Three broad areas for research developed, i. e. , research relating to each of the two concepts of probability and utility, and research relating to the interaction of the two in decision stituations. The papers in this book have been selected to illustrate various aspects of how the concept of probability has been used in psychological ex perimentation. The early experiments were generated, as mentioned above, by an interest among psychologists to see how people evaluate uncertainty and quantify it in probabilistic terms. Many of these experiments set out to evaluate subjects'' estimates of relative frequencies; these were situations where one had access to ''objective'' answers. In the 1960''s psychologists changed the focus of their studies to how people revise probabilistic judgments when they receive new information. In recent years there has been a growing interest in the cognitive processes by which people express their judgment in probabilistic terms.
