Stochastic Modelling and Control - Mark Davis - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Stochastic Modelling and Control - Mark Davis - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

This book aims to provide a unified treatment of input/output modelling and of control for discrete-time dynamical systems subject to random disturbances. The results presented are of wide applica bility in control engineering, operations research, econometric modelling and many other areas. There are two distinct approaches to mathematical modelling of physical systems: a direct analysis of the physical mechanisms that comprise the process, or a ''black box'' approach based on analysis of input/output data. The second approach is adopted here, although of course the properties ofthe models we study, which within the limits of linearity are very general, are also relevant to the behaviour of systems represented by such models, however they are arrived at. The type of system we are interested in is a discrete-time or sampled-data system where the relation between input and output is (at least approximately) linear and where additive random dis turbances are also present, so that the behaviour of the system must be investigated by statistical methods. After a preliminary chapter summarizing elements of probability and linear system theory, we introduce in Chapter 2 some general linear stochastic models, both in input/output and state-space form. Chapter 3 concerns filtering theory: estimation of the state of a dynamical system from noisy observations. As well as being an important topic in its own right, filtering theory provides the link, via the so-called innovations representation, between input/output models (as identified by data analysis) and state-space models, as required for much contemporary control theory.

Eye Movement Disorders - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

There is perhaps no area of neuro-ophthalmology that is advancing more rapidly with respect to an understanding of its anatomy and physiology than the ocular motor system. For this reason, it is difficult not only to keep up with the latest information concerning the basic mechanisms involved in the control of eye movements but also to remain up to date regarding the pathophysiology of specific disorders of eye movement. The material in this book is derived from a two-day course on eye movements held in The Netherlands in 1986. The course was designed as an introduction to the normal ocular motor system and to disorders of eye movements and was aimed toward orthoptists, ophthalmolo gists, optometrists, neurologists, and neurosurgeons. The chapters in this book were compiled by a trio of experts in the field of eye movements and contain discussions of anatomy and physiology of the ocular motor system, techniques of examination of patients with diplopia, and pathophysiology of specific disorders of ocular motility. Many of the authors of these chapters are among the most active investigators of eye movements in the world today, and their comments thus reflect the latest information in the field. This text is both basic and com prehensive and thus has something for everyone, from the student just beginning a study of the ocular motor system to the seasoned ''veteran'' who wishes to know the latest information regarding central ocular motor control mechanisms. Changing Health Care Systems from Ethical, Economic, and Cross Cultural Perspectives - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Changing Health Care Systems from Ethical, Economic, and Cross Cultural Perspectives - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

This volume is the result of a conference sponsored by the Medical Alumni Association of the University of California, Davis and held in Sacramento, California, in January, 2000, The purpose of this conference was to examine the impact ofvarious health care structures on the ability of health care professionals to practice in an ethically acceptable manner. One of the ground assumptions made is that ethical practice in medicine and its related fields is difficult in a setting that pays only lip service to ethical principles. The limits of ethical possibility are created by the system within which health care professionals must practice. When, for example, ethical practice necessitates—as it generally does—that health care professionals spend sufficient time to come to know and understand their patients’ goals and values but the system mandates that only a short time be spent with each patient, ethical practice is made virtually impossible. One of our chief frustrations in teaching health care ethics at medical colleges is that we essentially teach students to do something they are most likely to find impossible to do: that is, get to know and appreciate their patients’ goals and values. There are other ways in which systems alter ethical possibilities. In a system in which patients have a different physician outside the hospital than they will inside, ethical problems have a different shape than if the treating physician is the same person.

Access to Education in Europe - Paul Downes - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

This book identifies key elements of an international framework to develop systems-level change to promote access to education, including higher education, for socio-economically marginalized groups. It is based on interviews with senior government officials and senior management in universities, non formal education and prisons across 12 countries in Europe. The book identifies systemic obstacles to and opportunities for promotion of access to education for socio-economically excluded groups that are issues transferable to other countries'' contexts. It adopts a systemic focus on access across a range of domains of education, both formal higher education and non-formal education, as well as prison education. Through a focus on a more dynamic structuralist systems framework it develops an innovative post-Bronfenbrennerian view of system levels in lifespan developmental and educational psychology. It also develops an international agenda for reform in relation to these various system levels for access to education for socio-economically marginalized groups, through extraction of key structural indicators to evaluate reform progress in a transparent, culturally sensitive manner. The book identifies current gaps and strengths in policy, practice and structures that impact upon access to education, including higher education, across a range of countries. These gaps and strengths are illustrative and are to inform a strategic approach to system level change and development for the promotion of access to education for socio-economically marginalized groups in Europe and beyond. "Too many educational practices entrench social exclusion: it is an urgent priority across Europe that social justice policies are implemented for the inclusion of marginalised groups. Paul Downes'' analysis of these issues is timely. His conclusions are considered and practical: this book is a valuable and constructive resource for practitioners, academics and the policy community." Handbook of Psychiatric Diagnostic Procedures - R.c.w. Hall - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

The first volume of this Handbook discussed neuroendocrine diagnostic tests and the diagnostic use of central nervous system amine metabolites. That volume further reviewed the toxicological evaluation of patients and the laboratory evalua tion of treatment outcome. It suggested a system for evaluating newly admitted psychiatric patients and dermed the scope of diagnostic procedures available in the emergency department. Volume II focuses on the use and interpretation of electro physiologic and radiologic diagnostic tests in psychiatry and then explores the laboratory evaluation of special groups of patients. The clinical sections of this volume are designed to assist the physician in in stituting a proper workup for specific patients and defining tests which will assist them in the differential diagnosis of various psychiatric disorders. Such workups are critical to exclude possible organic disorders which can present with psychia tric symptoms. The workup suggested for the various classes of patients will assist the clini cian with differential diagnosis, provide base-line information for long-term follow up, delineate biological perimeters at the beginning of treatment, protect the pa tient from unrecognized cardiac, renal, hepatic, or endocrine disorders which could be adversely affected by the administration of medications, and provide a rational sequencing of workup for particular disorders to insure the most thorough yet cost efficient approach to the patient.

Atlas of Lymphography - T. De Roo - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

, Today the diagnosis of malignant diseases and determination of the causes of lymphoedema are iconce n ivable without lymphography. The radiologist now has a new method of examination at his disposal which offers him broad new diagnostic possibilities; on the other hand however, it also demands of him a thorough knowledge of the topographical anatomy. histology and physiology of the lymphatic system, the effects of contrast fluids and the appearance of com plications, as well as an extensive clinical knowledge of every possible disease of the lymphatic system. The Atlas in question is a survey of this new branch of science. The author is a pioneer in the field of lymphography. He has contributed to its development: the improvement nd a detailed refinement of technique and diag nosis was his special hobby. In particular he compared and evaluated selective supplementary roemgenological examination mth e ods in lymphography in large patient series. With singular intensity he or wked on the possibllities and limitations of the visualization of tumour metastases. This Atlas is based on ten years of experience. Its special value lies in the possibility of rapid orientation as well as a precise representation of lymphography as radiological method of examination. Dr. Tom de Roo has thus attained the objectives he had sct for this book and, within the field of radiological methods of examination, he has accorded lym phography the position and recognition it deserves.

Investigations in Modal and Tense Logics with Applications to Problems in Philosophy and Linguistics - Dov M. Gabbay - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Investigations in Modal and Tense Logics with Applications to Problems in Philosophy and Linguistics - Dov M. Gabbay - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

This book is intended to serve as an advanced text and reference work on modal logic, a subject of growing importance which has applications to philosophy and linguistics. Although it is based mainly on research which I carried out during the years 1969-1973, it also includes some related results obtained by other workers in the field (see the refer ences in Part 7). Parts 0, 1 and 2, can be used as the basis of a one year graduate course in modal logic. The material which they contain has been taught in such courses at Stanford since 1970. The remaining parts of the book contain more than enough material for a second course in modal logic. The exercises supplement the text and are usually difficult. I wish to thank Stanford University and Bar-Han University for making it possible for me to continue and finish this work, and A. Ungar for correcting the typescript. Bar-Ilan University, Israel Dov M. GABBA Y PART 0 AN INTRODUCTION TO GENERAL INTENSIONAL LOGICS CHAPTER 0 CONSEQUENCE RELATIONS Motivation We introduce the notions of a consequence relation (which is a generalization of the notion of a logical system) and of a semantics. We show that every consequence relation is complete for a canonical semantics. We define the notion of one semantics being Dian in another and study the basic properties of this notion. The concepts of this chapter are generalizations of the various notions of logical system and possible world semantics found in the literature.
