Common Perioperative Problems and the Anaesthetist - G. M. Woerlee - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Dr. G. M. Woerlee is well known in my department both as a clinician and teacher. Years ofexperience have taught him that the problems discussed here have as yet not been treated in this way in any single work. In my opinion there is a real need for such abook, not only for resident and specialist anaesthetists, but also among surgeons and internists, specialist and trainee. Management of a patient in the operating room is a matter of teamwork, and knowledge of the problems encountered is the basis of any mutual understanding! The information which has been assembled and clearly presented in this book should prove to be of great assistance in guiding our patients though an important phase of their lives. Professor Dr. Joh. Spierdijk, Department of Anaesthesia, University Hospital of Leyden, The Netherlands. vii PREFACE Much of the literature being published in the field of anesthesiology today concerns a narrow, in-depth scrutiny of a specific area or anesthetic technique that does not provide the novice with an overview ofthe perioperativeperiod and the commoneveryday problems faced by the anesthetist. Dr G. M. Woerlee of the University of Leiden with his book, "Com mon Perioperative Problems and the Anaesthetist", has filled a void in the current anes thetic literature. Dr Woerlee reviews in a straightforward, no-frills manner problems routinely encountered during the perioperative period. Other anesthesia textbooks do not cover the material in quite the same logical, step-by-step fashion.

Atlas of Two-Dimensional Echocardiography in Congenital Cardiac Defects - G. J. Van Mill - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Atlas of Two-Dimensional Echocardiography in Congenital Cardiac Defects - G. J. Van Mill - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

In a relatively short period of time two-dimensional echo cardiography has become the most important non-invasive diagnostic tool in the daily practice of a pediatric cardiologist who predominantly deals with congenital structural heart disease in neonates and infants. Consequently, one-dimensional M-mode echocardiography has lost most of its importance particularly in this field. Therefore, an atlas showing exclusively two-dimensional echocardiograms of the most common and some less frequently occurring malformations appeared to be a useful addition to the existing literature. The confinement to two dimensional imaging alone allowed an elaborate presentation of the various defects with more than 200 selected still frames and many additional explanatory drawings and diagrams. The material was collected from patients who were referred to the Department of Pediatric Cardiology of the Wilhelmina University Children''s Hospital in Utrecht during a period of about 2 years. The two-dimensional echocardiographic findings were correlated with cardiac catheterization data and/or surgical procedures and/or post mortem investigations. The necessary echocardiographic equipment was aquired with financial aid from the Dutch Heart Foundation. We are indebted to Mrs. J. W. Wetselaar for her outstanding artwork. We also thank P. D. Woltema and F. J. van Waert for the photographic reproductions, Jacomine Bosma for preparing and type-setting the entire manuscript and Dr. N. Middleton for critically reading the English text. G. Outlines of Entomology - R. G. Davies - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Outlines of Entomology - R. G. Davies - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

The present edition may be regarded as a descendant, much changed and greatly enlarged, of the late Dr A. D. Imms'' Outlines of Entomology, first published in 1942. This went through three further editions without much change, but after the death of the original author a fifth, revised edition by Professor o. W. Richards and myself appeared in 1959 and a sixth in 1978. The book now appears in a considerably extended version in which I have tried to provide a more balanced introduction to the whole field of modern entomology by dealing with several aspects of the subject not discussed at all in previous editions. Thus, in addition to innumerable lesser changes in the sections on insect structure, function, development, classification and phylogeny, I have completely recast the earlier chapter on some important modes of life in insects. This now includes a far wider range of biological topic;s well exemplified by the insects and should, I hope, appeal not only to, those already dedicated to entomology but also to others with more general biological interests. A completely new chapter on the biology of insect populations has also been added and may serve to indicate the debt which modern ecological theory owes to work on insect populations. It should hardly be necessary to apologize for introducing a certain amount of elementary mathematics into this account of a subject which is now among the most highly quantitative of biological disciplines.

Child Health in the Tropics - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

It is almost twenty years ago since under Nutricia''s auspices the first Nutricia Symposium took place. Professor Jonxis was mainly responsible for the organiza tion of the earlier symposia, whilst Professor Visser organized the fifth Nutricia Symposium in 1978. This book is the commitment to paper of the lectures given during the sixth Nutricia/Cow & Gate Symposium held in Louvain in 1983. Both Professor Eeckels and Professor Ransome-Kuti succeeded in collecting a panel of experts on ''Child Health in the Tropics''. We hope, in fact we are sure, that you will consider the contents of this book a daily stimulation in your medical profession. Be STARS - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

The idea of the symposium came during the XVllth General Assembly of the IAU at Montreal. The Working Group on Be stars adopted both the proposal of holding a meeting, and of having it at the Universitats sternwarte Munich. The meeting was organized under the auspices of IAU Comm. 29 (Stel lar Spectra) and the sponsorship of Comm. 45 (Stellar Classification). The Scientific Organizing Committee was composed of Mercedes Jaschek (chairman), W. Bonsack, C. de Loore, A. Feinstein, H. G. Groth, P. Harmanec, L. Houziaux, A. M. Hubert-De1p1ace, L. S. Luud, A. Slettebak and A. Underhill. The members of this committee are to be thanked for their devotion to the organization of what turned out to be a very successful meeting. The program was organized on an observational approach, comprising sessions on photometry, polarization, spectroscopy, infrared observations, rotation and binarity, X-ray observations, UV observations and mass loss, and atmospheric models. Each session started with an invited summary paper, followed by a number of contributions. The different sessions were chaired by A. Feinstein, R. Sta1io, C. de Loore, Ch. Fehrenbach, J. P. Swings, C. Jaschek, A. Sapar, G. T. Traving, M. de Groot and H. G. Groth. Upon request of the Working Group., a special session was devoted to bibliographic problems and observing campaigns. The Dean of the Faculty for Physics 0.£ the Ludwig-Maximilians-, Universitat welcomed the participants at the beginning of the Symposium. The meeting was closed by a summary talk, delivered by ~. P. Snow.

Hysteroscopy - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Because of increasing worldwide interest in the subject, a decision was made to coordinate the papers presented at the First European Symposium on Hysteroscopy, held in Antwerp, Belgium, in September 1982, into a text on hysteroscopy, including its indications, techniques, and complications. The Organising Committee called on Dr. Louis G. Keith of Northwestern University, Chicago, illinois USA, to edit all of the papers and to prepare them for publication as a multi-author textbook rather than as a haphazard collection of the proceedings of a meeting. Dr. Keith also supervised the many details of preparing the manuscript for publication, including the task of copy editing. The speakers at the Symposium were all eminent European hysteroscopists; the most up-to-date information was presented, assuring the current nature of the scientific data. By way of introduction (Part I), a historical survey of the development of hysteroscopy is presented. The material is then divided into several parts. Part II concerns the technical aspects of hysteroscopy. Part m includes the different clinical applications of hysteroscopy. Part IV concerns special applications of hysteroscopy, and the Conclusion (Part V) contains the remarks of two distinguished American guests. Dr. Alvin M. Siegler presented a special lecture on Jan Palfijn (Chapter 29), and Dr. Louis G. Keith was asked to discuss the relationship between art and medicine at a banquet at the Rubens Mansion in Antwerp (Chapter 30).

Differential Diagnosis - A.d. Gunn - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Differential Diagnosis - A.d. Gunn - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

This book is designed for use by medical students, nurses, young practitioners, internists, family physicians and all those initially involved with the problem of diagnostics. It is struc tured to provide a concise logical approach to the diagnosis of common illness and disorders in adults. The elucidation of an illness cause is not easy for the inexperienced. Although text books and guidance notes can be referred to for clarification of assembled thought - once a medical history has been taken - a system-orientated reference guide has considerable value for aiding and checking the logic of diagnosis. It is hoped that this book will fulfil that purpose. It could not have been written without the help of R. G. Brackenridge''s Essential Medicine (1979, MTP, Lancaster, England), and J. Fry''s Common Diseases (1979, MTP, Lancaster, England), to which the reader is referred and to which generous acknow ledgement is made. The tables of Differential Diagnosis that follow Chapters 3-7 are adapted from some that have appeared in Handbook of Differential Diagnosis, vols 1-3, published by Rocom Press, Hoffman La Roche Inc. , New Jersey, 1968-1974 - an invaluable publication now unfortun ately out of print, and permission to do so is gratefully apprec- 7 8 DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS iated. Finally without the stimulus and encouragement of Mr David Bloomer (MTP) and the particular assistance of Mrs J. C. Robinson, this book would never have been written. ALEXANDER D. G.

The Cultured Cell and Inherited Metabolic Disease - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

The use of cultured cells in the clinical diagnosis of hereditary metabolic dis ease is a rapidly developing subject to which many different disciplines have brought their expertise and knowledge. A number of scientists who have in dividually contributed to the growth of the subject gave invited papers at the Fourteenth Symposium of the Society for the Study of Inborn Errors of Metabolism in the University of Edinburgh on 13-16th July, 1976. These papers form the basis of this monograph which brings together contributions from the basic sciences and from physicians concerned primarily with human disease. The cross-fertilization produced by this interdisciplinary communica tion was invaluable to those trying to understand and overcome diagnostic problems posed by hereditary metabolic disease. Cell culture methods and cell preservation techniques were described by D. G. Harnden and D. E. Pegg; Dr T. Elsdale outlined some of the factors which control in vitro cell growth and division. Cell culture methods and cryopreser vation techniques have allowed the wide distribution of biochemically abnor mal cells and their study over long periods of time. It is also evident that when a defect which produces severe metabolic disorder in man can be studied in the laboratory using isolated cell cultures a wide variety of investigative procedures can be focused on to the cellular defect without distress or discomfort to the patient or relatives.

PVC Technology - M.v. Titow - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

PVC Technology - M.v. Titow - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

This book continues the tradition of the first two editions of the late W. S. Penn''s original PVC Technology, and the extensively revised third (1971) edition prepared by myself and B. J. Lanham. In the present edition the original general format, and the arrange ment of chapters, have been largely preserved, but virtually nothing now remains of Penn''s own text: a part of the contents is based on material from the 1971 TitowlLanham version (revised, updated and mainly rewritten): the rest is new, including, inter alia, several chapters specially contributed by experts from the plastics industry in the UK and Europe. The section listing international (ISO) and national (BS, ASTM and DIN) standards relevant to PVC, which was first intro duced (as Appendix 1) in the 1971 edition, proved a popularfeature: it has now been brought up to date and considerably extended. Two further appendices provide, respectively, comprehensive unit conver sion"tables (with additional information on some ofthe mostfrequently encountered units, and the SI units), and a list of many properties of interest in PVC materials, with definitions, typical numerical values, and references~to relevant standard test methods. For various reasons, work on this edition involved more than the usual quota of problems: I am truly grateful to the Publisher''s Manag ing Editor, Mr G. B. Olley, for his understanding, patience, unfailing courtesy and friendly encouragement.

Current Trends in Lithium and Rubidium Therapy - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Lithium research and therapy needs to be continually re-evaluated on the basis of modern methodological approaches in order to shed new light on the mechanism of action and to improve therapeutic use. This book. based on the proceedings of the "International Meeting on Lithium and Rubidium Therapy" held in Venice from September 30th to October 2nd 1983. is devoted to current trends in the pharmacology and clinical aspects of lithium and of a newly born therapeutic cation. rubidium. The first part of this volume deals with modern trends in behavioural and biochemical approaches to the mechanism of action of lithium. A larger consideration is reserved for lithium therapy from a clinical point of view and includes re-assessment of long-term treatment with regard to serum levels. biological and psychological predictors. side-effects and new therapeutic uses. A smaller section is concerned with some recent clinical studies on rubidium. This volume should be an invaluable aid to all psychiatrists and those who work in the field of research of these pharmacological active metals. G. U. Corsini List of contributors A. ALCIATI L. Saline Lakes - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Limnological research on saline lakes is practiced by a growing cadre of scientists active worldwide in a diversity of disciplines. Every three years since 1979, an international symposium on inland saline waters has served to strengthen and expand the scope of the studies. Promising areas for further research especially well suited to saline lakes include the comparative physiology of adaptation to osmotic stresses, the role of microbial and protozoan communities in nutrient dynamics and biotic interactions in ecosystems with few species. The Third International Symposium on Inland Saline Lakes was held at the University of Nairobi, Nairobi, Kenya, under the auspices of the Societas Internationalis Limnologiae (SIL). The symposium was sponsored by and received financial or other support from the U.S. National Science Foundation (International Program), United Nations Environment Program, University of California, Santa Barbara, and University of Nairobi. The proceedings occurred for three days (28-31 August, 1985) and were attended by 33 scientists from 14 countries (see list of Participants). On the day prior to the first formal session an afternoon trip to Lake Magadi and salt works was held. The tribulations of this excursion served to acquaint the participants with each other and with the realities of exploring the African bush. A three day post-congress expedition to the rift valley included visits to spectacular saline lakes such as Nakuru and Bogoria. Much of the meeting''s and excursion''s success is owed to the efforts of the local organizer, Dr. Stephen G.
