Through the window of multicultural literature, we are allowed to enter worlds not physically open to us—to view, to empathize, and to participate emotionally in ways that may ultimately change the way we see ourselves and the society in which we live. Introducing students to the historical contexts of racism and prejudice through the use of literature promotes active discussions and leads students to think about racial diversity. This book provides a mechanism for teachers—pre-service to veteran—to develop an understanding of multicultural literature and the criteria used to evaluate it. It promotes multicultural education in schools and helps to develop teaching strategies and resources that will benefit all students. Through its discussion of picture books, folklore, fairytales, myth, legends, fantasy, historical fiction, realistic fiction, and nonfiction works appropriate for grades K-8, students are enabled to see the strengths and weaknesses within each literature genre as well as within each culture. Prospective and experienced teachers will gain a deeper understanding of how to use multicultural literature throughout the entire curriculum and not just during designated months or time periods. Examples of unit plans and an extensive annotated bibliography are also included. Cultural Journeys will help teachers and other readers to deepen their knowledge, appreciation, and pedagogical understandings of multicultural literature.

The Essentials of Beautiful Singing - Karen Tillotson Bauer - Bog - Scarecrow Press - Plusbog.dk

The Essentials of Beautiful Singing - Karen Tillotson Bauer - Bog - Scarecrow Press - Plusbog.dk

Voice research has revealed much about the singing voice, but science without practical application may fall short of fine singing. In The Essentials of Beautiful Singing: A Three Step Kinesthetic Approach, performer and scholar Karen Tillotson Bauer bridges the gap between science and singing. It reframes the complexities of voice science with a cultivated simplicity of style and terminology that speaks directly to the singer’s experience of singing, a kinesthetic one. Although well grounded in science, Bauer’s book does not linger in scientific terminology, but rather focuses on an action-based pedagogical approach that speaks to the kinesthetic nature of singing. The skillful use of the body as a musical instrument is the source of fine singing and only through heightened kinesthetic awareness can vocal skills be achieved and refined. Fact-based explanations of kinesthetic singing processes are remarkably clear and replace vague notions about good breath management, rich resonance, and clear enunciation. Guided exercises inform both the body and the mind as a kinesthetic unit. The Essentials of Beautiful Singing has received praise in the Journal of Singing, Choice Reviews for Academic Music Libraries, and the International Choral Bulletin, among others. Its practical perspective reflects the efforts and goals of singer, voice teacher, and choral director. Paired with a science focused text in a voice pedagogy class, it provides a needed balance between science and singing.

Balkan Refrain - Dimitrije O. Golemovic - Bog - Scarecrow Press - Plusbog.dk

Balkan Refrain - Dimitrije O. Golemovic - Bog - Scarecrow Press - Plusbog.dk

While the refrain is a frequent and important feature of folk singing, little has been written on it and what it can achieve. Balkan Refrain: Form and Tradition in European Folk Song attempts to establish what refrain actually is and how it can be defined in folk and scholarly practice based on musical examples from Serbia, Montenegro, and the Republic of Srpska, with the aim of finding general rules applicable to refrains in the songs of other nations. The refrain is observed from musical and linguistic perspectives, as well as its religious, social, and economical uses. As refrain is so important in songs, special attention is devoted to its role in the development of singing. Dimitrije O. Golemovic examines various forms of refrains and their constructive role in singing, and he establishes a terminology based on several characteristics of refrains, such as their role in the song and its place within the melopoetic unit. Golemovic also takes the view that refrain can be a specific "code" in the song that marks its melody, and he supports this with a number of examples, both ancient and more recent. Also discussed is the relationship between refrain and movement in songs accompanying dance and the role of refrain in commercializing newly-composed folk music. The book includes notes, a bibliography, 190 musical examples, and an audio CD of traditional folk songs as well as some examples of newly composed folk songs.

The Library-Classroom Partnership - Rosann Jweid - Bog - Scarecrow Press - Plusbog.dk

The Library-Classroom Partnership - Rosann Jweid - Bog - Scarecrow Press - Plusbog.dk

The purpose of The Library-Classroom Partnership is to assist library teachers and classroom teachers to effectively use the library and its resources as an extension of the classroom. As in the earlier edition, the lessons included in this book stress the library media skills needed by individuals for lifelong learning. Long after adults have forgotten a particular fact of history or the techniques of balancing an equation, they continue to use library skills to answer their questions and to meet the demands of an ever-changing society. It has been well documented that the skills taught in a library are most effectively learned within the context of classroom work. To this end, the librarian and the teacher must form a working team to take each other''s ideas and develop them into effective learning experiences for students. The authors have incorporated the teaching of those library media skills with every discipline taught in the school. Through these lessons, students will realize that research and reference are a vital part of the learning process, complementing and enriching every subject. The eleven disciplines (English, mathematics, social studies, science, art, music, home and careers, technology, physical education, health, and foreign language) normally taught in the junior high and middle schools are addressed in this work. To be included, a lesson must be a learning experience in both the library skills and the subject areas. Each unit has been cooperatively developed using the expertise of the school library media specialist and the subject teacher. All lessons have been implemented successfully in the junior high and middle school environment. This revised and expanded edition of The Library Classroom- Partnership also deals with technology and the changing economic and social conditions affecting public schools. It includes a new section on reading enrichment as well as instruction in accessing information electronically.

Wife of the Life of the Party - Lita Grey Chaplin - Bog - Scarecrow Press - Plusbog.dk

Wife of the Life of the Party - Lita Grey Chaplin - Bog - Scarecrow Press - Plusbog.dk

Wife of the Life of the Party is the memoir of the late Lita Grey Chaplin (1908-1995), the only one of Chaplin''s wives to have written an account of life with Chaplin. Her memoir is an extraordinary Hollywood story of someone who was there from the very beginning. Born Lillita Louise MacMurray in Hollywood, she began her career at twelve with the Charlie Chaplin Film Company, when Chaplin selected her to appear with him as the flirting angel in The Kid. When she was fifteen, Chaplin signed her as the leading lady in The Gold Rush and changed her name to Lita Grey. She was forced to leave the production when, at the age of sixteen, she became pregnant with Chaplin''s child. She married Chaplin in Empalme, Mexico in November 1924. The Chaplins stayed together for two years. Lita bore Chaplin two sons: Charles Chaplin, Jr. and Sydney Chaplin. In November 1926, after Lita discovered that Chaplin was having an affair with Merna Kennedy (Lita''s best friend, whom she had persuaded Chaplin to hire as the leading lady in The Circus), Lita left Chaplin and filed for divorce. It was one of the first divorce cases to receive a public airing. The divorce complaint ran a staggering 42 pages and fed scandal with its revelations about the private life of Charles Chaplin. Lita''s divorce settlement of $825,000 was the largest in American history at the time. Lita authorized the publication of another biography, My Life with Chaplin, in 1966. The book was mainly the creation of her co-author, Morton Cooper, who re-wrote her manuscript. Lita was never happy with the many inaccuracies and distortions of that book. Wife of the Life of the Party is not to be seen as a supplement to her early book, but rather Lita''s own version of her life, told for the first time.
