Researching Persons with Mental Illness - Rosalind J. Dworkin - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

This volume is a superb resource for teaching or becoming aware of the unique theoretical and methodological issues that must be resolved before successfully researching the mentally ill. The volume abounds with relevant references to the research literature and practical advice that should facilitate the conduct of research projects oriented toward the mentally ill. --Howard B. Kaplan, Texas A&M University Can the mentally ill be interviewed? What kind of reliability can be expected in their responses? What about the ethics of informed consent? Although standard social science methodologies have been used successfully to study mental health, researching the mentally ill introduces unique theoretical and methodological issues. A first of its kind, Researching Persons with Mental Illness focuses on the study of mentally ill adults at the individual level of analysis and explores significant issues: how theories of human behavior that have been developed for a general population may have limited applicability in a population whose defining characteristic is a label of mental pathology; how symptoms are defined and measured; ways to plan and implement research to avoid methodological design problems; uses of alternative data sources, such as clinical charts; and the issues of research in multi-disciplinary settings. Designed for social scientists, this pathbreaking volume will alert researchers in ways to deal with the special problems in researching the mentally ill.

Uncommon Core - Michael W. Smith - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Uncommon Core - Michael W. Smith - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Let’s face it, weak rivets notwithstanding, the Titanic wouldn’t have sunk if the iceberg had been spotted in time. And let’s face it, the CCSS won’t be classroom-worthy unless practitioners chart our course. Depend on Michael Smith, Deborah Appleman, and Jeff Wilhelm to help you navigate through some potentially treacherous waters. Uncommon Core puts us on high-alert about some outright dangerous misunderstandings looming around so-called "standards-aligned" instruction, then shows us how to steer past them—all in service of meeting the real intent of the Common Core. Smith, Appleman, and Wilhelm counter with teaching suggestions that are true to the research and true to our students, including how: - - Reader-based approaches can complement text-based ones - - Prereading activities can help students meet the strategic and conceptual demands texts place on them - - Strategy instruction can result in a careful and critical analysis of individual texts while providing transferable understandings - - Inquiry units around essential questions can generate meaningful conversation and higher-order thinking about those texts - - Selection criteria that consider interpretive complexity can take us so much farther than those that consider textual complexity alone - Given the number of strategies, lesson ideas, and activities in the book, Uncommon Core is really less about the standards and more about timeless, excellent teaching and how to use it like never before to meet the Core ideals. Let’s put instruction where it belongs: back in the hands of the experts. "Finally! A book with more light than heat on the issue of standards and their implications for learning." --GRANT WIGGINS Coauthor of Understanding by Design

Research in Psychotherapy and Counselling - Dr. Laco Timulak - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

"Timulak′s aims, to clarify research and its value for practice, and to alert people to its ′limitations and potential misuse′, have certainly been achieved. This book deserves a place in every professional library and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in understanding more about research" - Therapy Today, May 2009 ′An authoritative text, providing a first-rate outline of the specific methods that counselling and psychotherapy researchers use, and illustrated through a wealth of examples′ - Professor Mick Cooper, Senior Lecturer in Counselling, University of Strathclyde ′The content is comprehensive and covers the full range of knowledge and information that a trainee psychologist/psychotherapy researcher would want to have… It offers a general overview of psychotherapy research methods and their logic which is not duplicated in any book that I know of′ - Georgia Lepper, Senior Lecturer in Psychotherapy, University of Kent Research in Psychotherapy and Counselling is a guide to methods used in studying the outcomes and processes of therapy. Introducing a range of methodologies which are used internationally, the author describes different research designs and illustrates them through examples of actual studies. Interactive Qualitative Analysis - Norvell Northcutt - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Interactive Qualitative Analysis - Norvell Northcutt - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

"The authors take a ′user friendly′ systematic approach to qualitative research, something that has long been missing in the field. I consider this to be a groundbreaking work, one that will hit home with students and faculty alike." —Justin M. Laird, SUNY Brockport "This book does an excellent job of integrating design, methods, and analysis. . . . The real beauty of the book is that it overturns many of the age-old assumptions about how ′good′ research should be done. . . . The authors′ pleasant and refreshing style, coupled with subtle irreverence for outmoded or constraining paradigms of inquiry, makes for highly enjoyable reading." —Roger Rennekamp, University of Kentucky Interactive Qualitative Analysis: A Systems Method for Qualitative Research aims to help students unscramble the mysteries of qualitative data collection, coding, and analysis by showing how to use a systematic, qualitative technique: interactive qualitative analysis. The authors synthesize ideas from grounded theory, path and factor analysis, quality management theory, Foucauldian concepts of power and knowledge, and systems theory. A dialectical revision of Guba and Lincoln′s theory of rigor is offered which, combined with systems theory, offers new insights into the meaning of reliability and validity in qualitative research. Unlike many theoretical works, Interactive Qualitative Analysis develops the theory into a complete and transparent set of protocols for research design, observation, analysis, and interpretation. The construction, interpretation, and comparison of recursive systems of meaning, or mindmaps, is articulated in detail. The book is organized so that those not interested in theory can skip to the applied chapters. Case studies illustrate each stage of the research process with an emphasis on interpretation. The combination of theory and practice perfectly suits the book for advanced qualitative research courses across the social sciences, especially those that address epistemology. Professional researchers and evaluators will also find this an invaluable guide to qualitative analysis. Key Features * Advice boxes alert readers to potential pitfalls in qualitative research, and offer the appropriate steps to take in order to avoid such issues* Sidebars provide clear and concise snapshots of the theoretical basis for research decisions* Interactive CD contains sample data and exercises to provide students with effective practice as well as reinforce and clarify principles explained in the book* Provides a "road map" to using interactive qualitative inquiry in dissertation writing

Diving Deep Into Nonfiction, Grades 6-12 - Michael W. Smith - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Diving Deep Into Nonfiction, Grades 6-12 - Michael W. Smith - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

"General reading strategies and teacher-developed questions will only take our students so far—with our approach, students gain astounding independence because they engage directly with the nonfiction author, and with how that author used specific details (moves) and structures to communicate meanings and effects." —Wilhelm and Smith All nonfiction is a conversation between the writer and the reader, an invitation to agree or disagree with compelling and often provocative ideas about some aspect of the world we live in. At the end of the day, it’s our responsibility to decide if the argument is sound. With Diving Deep Into Nonfiction , Jeffrey D. Wilhelm and Michael W. Smith deliver a revolutionary teaching framework that helps students read well by noticing the rules and conventions of this dynamic exchange. The classroom-tested lessons include engaging short excerpts and teach students to be powerful readers who know both how authors signal what’s worth noticing in a text and how readers connect and make meaning of what they have noticed. No matter what they are reading, students learn to be on high alert, and highly curious about how texts work and what they mean, as they learn to notice direct statements of principle, calls to attention, ruptures, and readers’ rules of notice: - - Notice the topics and the textual conversation: Who is speaking and how might he or she be responding to another’s ideas? What is the idea that gives "heat" to this text? - - Notice key details: What attracts my attention? How does the author signal both direct and implicit statements of meaning? How does the author use the unexpected? How can I interpret patterns of key details to see overall meanings? - - Notice varied nonfiction genres: What are the essential features of this kind of text? How does the author employ them? What effects are they designed to have on the reader? - - Notice text structure: How does the author structure the text to connect details and ideas? What patterns of thought does the author use along the way? - With Diving Deep Into Nonfiction , Wilhelm and Smith upend current practices, and it’s high time. Once your students engage with these lessons, you’ll never go back to the same old tired approach— and reading across content areas enters a whole new era.

Families & Time - Kerry J. Daly - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Families & Time - Kerry J. Daly - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

What is family time and what value do we place on it? How many families today have time to be families? How do families view, use, and seek to control time, and how successful are they at it? Caught between a public world speeding along on information superhighways and their own private desire to preserve the family as a rest stop, family members look for new and efficient ways to protect, control, and manage their time. The concept of time is central to the study of families and is used in several different ways: families have changed through history, families experience the passage of time as they age over the life course, and families negotiate time for being together. Families & Time is the first to synthesize these differing concepts of time into a broad theory of how families understand time. In this important volume, Kerry J. Daly examines time as a pervasive influence in the changing experimental world of families. The book opens with a discussion of the various ways time can be conceptualized, in general, followed by an examination of how families have experienced time throughout history. Subsequent chapters examine the social construction of time in families; as well as such specific topics as time and technology in the home; controlling time; and the societal, gender, and intergenerational politics of family time. Though at its heart a theoretical book, Families & Time consciously focuses on the practical aspects of this theory in understanding the power in the family, the family life cycle, and work/family conflicts. Scholars interested in the development of theory of the family, examining gender and work issues, and exploring various perspectives on time will find this book indispensable. "In this compelling portrayal of the patterns and politics of family time, author Kerry J. Daly has produced a masterpiece. Destined to become a classic, Families & Time will alert scholars across disciplines to the breadth and depth of interdisciplinary family studies. Accessible to everyone, Families & Time can be read for knowledge and pleasure, as a new contribution to family theory construction, a mediation on the pervasiveness and value of time in family experience, and a wellspring of creative ideas for families who want to gain control over their perceived loss of time in an accelerated society. Scrupulously documented in a writing style that combines metaphor, narrative, and empirical findings, Daly succeeds in offering a new consciousness and theory of family time. I will read and recommend this book to others over and over again." --Katherine R. Allen, Ph.D., Family and Child Development, Virginia Tech

Males at Risk - Frank G. Bolton - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Males at Risk - Frank G. Bolton - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

It happens. Male children and adolescents are sexually abused, sexually misused, and involved with adults, peers, and siblings in ways that inhibit the development of normal sexuality. In Males at Risk, the authors examine why sexual abuse occurs, how prevalent the problem is among male populations, and offer suggestions for clinicians working with sexually abused children. The authors examine environmental factors which may contribute to child sexual abuse, explore the long-term impact on child victims, the differences between male and female child victims, the role of perpetrators, and evaluation, assessment, and treatment issues. Finally, the authors provide step-by-step case guidelines for clinicians involved in treating abused male children. "Clinicians will welcome this long overdue resource. . . . Refreshingly, clinicians are encouraged both to evaluate individual differences in determining the meaning of the abuse itself and to attend to the full range of emotional, sexual, and interpersonal spheres of functioning." --Readings: A Journal of Reviews and Commentary in Mental Health "This book is filled with useful information on a subject often left unaddressed. I recommend this book to clinicians who treat males who have been sexually abused and to anyone else concerned with this subject." --Family Violence Bulletin "An excellent sourcebook for those dealing with the rehabilitation of abused male children and, possibly, male abusers. . . . Males at Risk is a sensitive but heavy look at sexual abuse of the male child, following through treatment/therapy to recovery." --Paediatric Nursing "Males at Risk is a welcome addition to the relatively small existing literature which addresses the difficulties faced by abused males. . . . An important early source for those wishing to develop services for adult males abused as children, particularly in respect of addressing potential perpetration dangers." --Community Care "This book is well written and well documented. . . . A book that all practitioners, researchers, and instructors in the area of child sexual abuse will want to have on their shelves. It will prove a valuable addition to their collections." --Journal of Marriage and the Family "[The authors] describe the many possible areas in which persons can be psychologically damaged by abuse, the possible therapeutic techniques available for treatment, the available tests and inventories for assessing the victim′s functioning, prioritization of problem areas, and development of a treatment plan...will certainly be useful for practitioners dealing with sexual abuse victims of either sex. The book is quite good." --Contemporary Sociology "An excellent book. It provides a thoughtful discussion of what is known about sexual abuse of males and gives detailed information about assessment techniques and treatment strategies. I recommend it to anyone who works with male incest victims." --Issues in Child Abuse Accusations "An intelligent and worthwhile effort on the part of the authors to bring together several scarce and often conflicting sources of information. It offers a practical and meaningful source of information for clinicians and researchers who are seeking a comprehensive perspective on sexual molestation as it applies to males. It further serves to identify boys and men as victims in need of special attention in the process of assessment and intervention. For clinicians who treat sexually abused boys and/or adult male survivors of childhood sexual abuse, this book should be an important resource." --Journal of Interpersonal Violence "In this scholarly but readable text geared towards the professional, the emphasis is upon the young male at risk, the manner in which potentially hazardous situations arise, and what to do about it." --Child and Family Behavior Therapy "An important addition to the treating therapist′s library. . .will help therapists help violated children heal." --Contemporary Psychology "I heartily recommend this book, not simply to therapists who specialize in treating ongoing child abuse survivors, but to all clinicians who work with males. This book reminds therapists to stay alert for the signs of abuse, provides a framework to assess for abuse, and offers a complete model to treat when abuse is discovered." --Resource Reviews "Thanks to Bolton, Morris, and MacEacheron for a document that will serve helpers of every stripe well. More important, it will serve the children." --The Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Review "Highly recommended." --Family Violence & Sexual Assault Bulletin Book Club

Research with Hispanic Populations - Gerardo Marin - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Research with Hispanic Populations - Gerardo Marin - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

This well-written book can provide a very useful insight into the issues, problems, difficulties, and realities of conducting market and/or consumer research with Hispanic populations. I strongly recommend it as mandatory reading for researchers who have limited or no experience in research with Hispanic subjects in the U.S. and are interested in doing such studies. Furthermore, even experienced researchers in marketing or consumer behavior would find valuable content that would likely enhance their research activities. . . . This book is also timely. Because of the current interest in investigating the roles of culture and/or ethnicity in marketing strategies as well as consumption behaviors, the contribution of this book could be significant. . . The first of the six chapters in the book is labeled ′Hispanics: Who Are They?′ and is a particularly valuable one, both in its content and in its references to helpful literature. . . . The second chapter, ′Issues in Identifying Hispanics,′ covers three important topics. . . . Chapters 4 and 5 . . . are excellent contributions. . . . Just as important, if not more so, is Chapter 5, ′Translation of Data Collection Instruments.′. . . In my opinion, even fully bilingual researchers would benefit from the discussion and references available in this chapter. The difficulties of appropriate translation of research instruments cannot be overstated. The authors provide very good insight and suggestions on how to minimize problems. . . . This chapter on translation techniques would be of value to researchers considering cross-cultural research in more than one language. . . Research With Hispanic Populations is a well-done, concise, to-the-point, richly referenced book. I strongly recommend that marketing and consumer researchers in this area read it before beginning their next research project. --Journal of Marketing Research "The book represents a valuable first step in fulfilling the indicated need. . . . Research on Hispanics is important not only because of their increasing numbers but also to inform public policy and practice relevant to problems arising from low socioeconomic status and cultural margination. . . . The chapter on translations is succinct, knowledgeable, and appropriately qualified. . . . The book′s recommendations . . . are well worth considering. They represent a first step in what, I hope, will become a continuing effort to improve the cultural sensitivity of the accumulating research on Hispanics." --Contemporary Psychology "This book provides an introduction to many basic concerns in the design of research on human populations. Most of the authors′ suggestions seem as important for research with non-Hispanics as for research with Hispanics. The writing is clear, and the examples, mainly drawn from the authors′ own research, are compelling. The level of presentation seems appropriate for introductory courses in sociology or cross-cultural psychology." --Journal of Official Statistics "Research With Hispanic Populations is an important resource. . . . Written by Gerardo Marín and Barbara VanOss Marín, two of the most experienced and respected researchers of Hispanic behavior, the text covers both basic and more specific information in working with Hispanics." --The COSSMHO Reporter "This volume is excellent. It is clear, the level of presentation is just right, it is interesting, well organized, accurate, and thoroughly covers the topic. I highly recommend it and will use it in my cross-cultural psychology class." --Harry Triandis, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign "Now here′s a useful tool that presents you with a wide variety of information aimed at helping you before you sit down to devise a new report, presentation, or strategy." --Minority Markets Alert "Research with Hispanic Populations is essential reading for anyone who studies diverse populations. Written in a clear and concise style, it is the best treatment of issues related to research with individuals of Hispanic origin that I have ever seen. My colleagues and I have found immediate use in the book′s description of possible response effects such as social desirability bias among Hispanic respondents." --Paul Rosenfeld, Navy Personnel Research and Development Center, San Diego "In six short chapters, Gerardo Marín and Barbara VanOss Marín address several unique problems as well as alleged problems of conducting research with Hispanics. The chapter on translation pitfalls is especially thorough and useful. Valuable guidelines and suggestions are offered at the end of each major section, and numerous research illustrations liven the text. The authors have extensive experience in research with Hispanics, and the bibliography is an excellent listing of studies about Hispanics. Most appropriate for psychology/social science research methods collections in academic libraries. Upper-division undergraduates and above." --Choice "[The authors] have written a concise

Hate Crimes - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

Hate Crimes - - Bog - SAGE Publications Inc - Plusbog.dk

"The book is an eminently useful collection of social-scientific articles, journalistic essays and interviews, and first-person stories of violence. It makes a start at documenting the endemic hate and violence against gay men and lesbians in the United States and the need to do something about it. Beyond documenting the extent of the assaults, Hate Crimes explores their social context, the various motivations of the perpetrators and the organizations formed to support victims and help stop the violence." --The Women′s Review of Books "A first-rate interdisciplinary collection: beautifully organized, highly readable, informative, multicultural, and attentive to feminist concerns. A major source on recent U.S. developments. . . . This volume is a ′must read′ for anyone in law enforcement, health care, or social services, as well as for educators, social scientists, and lesbians and gay men everywhere. All levels." --Choice "Violence against lesbians and gay men is shamefully pervasive and in dire need of remedy. This pioneering book takes a broad and deep look at this much overlooked problem and points the way for future study and action. I recommend Hate Crimes to anyone who cares about this alarming injustice." --Urvashi Vaid, Former Executive Director, National Gay & Lesbian Task Force "This book lays an incontrovertible foundation for the reality, seriousness and adverse effects of anti-lesbian and gay violence and does so within a rich context of social-psychological understandings. . . . Empirical research, theoretical discussions, clinical material, personal accounts and public policy implications are all focused, deftly handled and managed into a coherent whole. . . . Whether one is specifically interested in the topic, or simply interested in seeing the level of sophistication and integration gay and lesbian perspectives are capable of, this volume is highly recommended." --John C. Gonsiorek, APA Division 44 Newsletter "A very up-to-the-minute account. . . . Herek and Berrill have compiled a series of essays by women and men who are literally creating a new philosophy of the etymology of anti-lesbian/anti-gay crime. There is provocative new material on the psychological effects of continued harassment and how the fear of violence can lead to violence itself." --Lambda Book Report "Anti-gay and -lesbian violence is increasingly coming to the attention of police in cities across the nation. We have a responsibility to the gay citizens in our communities to understand the nature of these insidious crimes and use this understanding to develop model responses to the problem. I recommend this book to all in the police community who are interested in learning more about the problem of antigay and lesbian violence." --Darrel W. Stephens, Executive Director, Police Executive Research Forum "The papers collected here represent an important milestone, the first anthology devoted exclusively to serious discussion of what is known about antigay prejudice and violence. It is a most thorough and thoughtful book, one that should be read by all Americans who wish to understand the specific dimensions of antigay violence and the general problem of hate crimes in our society. It will be especially useful to law enforcement personnel, legislators, and policymakers. . . . Whether based on sexual orientation, race, religion, or ethnicity, bigotry and the violence it inspires pose a grave threat to the peace and harmony of our communities. The need to alert Americans to this threat is great. We need especially to educate our youth about tolerance and about appreciating the benefits that we enjoy as a result of our culture′s rich diversity of peoples, beliefs, and ways of living. This ground-breaking book sounds an alarm and provides tools for understanding the dimensions of hate violence. It deserves your careful study." --from the Foreword by The Honorable John Conyers Jr., U.S. House of Representatives "This collection clearly describes the process and aftermath of victimization in crimes where the victim has been targeted because of her or his sexual orientation. This book is particularly important in the aftermath of the antigay sentiment expressed during the recent 1992 Republican National Convention and in the national campaign. . . . These papers clearly and compellingly describe the victims′ fears of antigay violence. The final papers contain an important discussion of strategies that communities and public officials should take to support victims of antigay violence and to deter future antigay hate crimes. . . . It should be read by all those who want to understand the fear of violence that is the constant companion of many gay men and lesbians in our society." --Contemporary Sociology Thousands of antigay crimes have been reported. Many thousands more go unacknowledged every year, the survivors fearing further victimization from a ho
