American Furniture Designers - Oscar P. Fitzgerald - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

The 20 th century furniture is hot. American Furniture Designers: 1900 to the Present highlights the furniture produced by the 20 most important American furniture designers of the 20 th and early 21 st centuries plus a selection of the best-known European designers whose work is sold by Knoll International and Herman Miller. The designers are organized into five chapters. Introductions to each section summarize the evolution of furniture design as it evolved through the 20 th and early 21 st centuries. The book begins with the Arts and Crafts era before World War I; moves into the interwar period when Modernism gained a foothold in America; continues through the Postwar heyday of Mid-century Modern; highlights the furniture from the 1970s and into the 21st century with a focus on the foremost promoters of modern furniture, Knoll International and Herman Miller; and concludes with a selection of the top Studio Furniture makers and their innovative creations. The book focuses on the leading American designers from each of these periods including Gustav Stickley and Charles Rohlfs during the Arts and Crafts movement, Paul Frankl and Gilbert Rohde in the interwar period, Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson for Mid- century Modern, and Wendell Castle and George Nakashima for Studio Furniture to name just a few. All their furniture is explained and profusely illustrated with 280 color photos. For anyone curious about the modern material culture that surrounds them, the book will explain everything about American furniture from 1900 into the 21 st century: when it was made, where it was made, who made it, what it was made of, how it was designed, how long it was in production, and how the furniture related to its contemporaries.

Deconstructing Undecidability - Michael Oliver - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Deconstructing Undecidability - Michael Oliver - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

In Deconstructing Undecidability, Michael Oliver explores the problematic nature of decision, including the inherent exclusivity that accompanies any decision, and the ways in which we attempt to avoid recognizing this exclusivity. Advancing current readings of the deconstructive work of Jacques Derrida, Oliver critically examines the perennial problem of inescapable decision by focusing on two particular scenarios. In discourses where a pursuit of justice or liberation from systemic oppression is a primary concern, Oliver argues for an appreciation of the inescapability of making limited, difficult decisions for particular forms of justice. He highlights a similarly precarious predicament in the context of theological understandings and negotiations of divine decision, pointing to the impossibility of safely navigating this issue. In so doing, Oliver offers a renewed sense of undecidability that urges continued vigilance with regard to complex, difficult decisions. While wholeheartedly affirming the problem of exclusivity that inevitably accompanies decision, Oliver argues for the necessity of reckoning with difficult decisions and highlights how one only ever mistakenly inhabits the illusory position of “indecision,” i.e. standing outside the decision point, as a reflection of power and privilege. Ultimately, this book aims to gain a greater appreciation for the complexity of the problem of decision—in the contexts of justice work and theological understandings of divine decision—in order to be more rigorous and transparent in our continued engagement with it.

Formal Revolution in the Work of Baudelaire and Flaubert - Kathryn Oliver Mills - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Formal Revolution in the Work of Baudelaire and Flaubert - Kathryn Oliver Mills - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

In Formal Revolution in the Work of Baudelaire and Flaubert, Kathryn Oliver Mills argues that despite the enduring celebrity of Baudelaire and Flaubert, their significance to modern art has been miscast and misunderstood. To date, literary criticism has paid insufficient attention to these authors'' literary form and their socio-cultural context. In addition, critical literature has not always adequately integrated individual works to each author’s broader oeuvre: on the one hand critics do not often maintain rigorous distinctions among texts when discussing Baudelaire and Flaubert, and on the other hand scholars of Baudelaire and Flaubert have not consistently considered the relationship of individual texts to either writer’s corpus. Furthermore, critical focus has been on the modernity of Les Fleurs du mal, Madame Bovary, and L''Education Sentimentale. Addressing these lacunae in scholarship, Mills puts forth the argument that Baudelaire''s collection of prose poems, Le Spleen de Paris, and Flaubert''s short, poetic tales, Trois contes, best embody the modern aesthetic that Baudelaire develops in Le Peintre de la vie moderne and that Flaubert elaborates in his correspondence. Formal Revolution places these relatively less well-known but last published works in relationship with the artistic goals of their authors, showing that Baudelaire and Flaubert were both acutely aware of the need to launch a new form of literature in order to literally “come to terms with” the dramatic changes transforming the nineteenth-century into the Modern Age. More specifically, Formal Revolution demonstrates that for Baudelaire and Flaubert the formal project of fusing prose with poetry—as poetic prose in the case of Flaubert, as poetry in prose in the case of Baudelaire—was crucial to their mission of “painting modern life.” This work concludes that experimentation with literary form represents these two seminal writers’ major legacy to modernity; suggests that the twentieth-century might have gone too far down that road; and speculates about the future direction of literature. The modernity of Baudelaire and Flaubert, still relevant today but often taken for granted, needs to be reexamined in light of the cultural, formal, and contextual considerations that inform Formal Revolution in the Work of Baudelaire and Flaubert.

Moser - Donna Mcneil - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers has set the standard for fine woodworking and meticulously hand-crafted furniture for more than forty years. In this modern age of inexpensive mass production, Moser furniture stands out because every piece is hand-made by a master craftsman (or woman). Generally minimalist in style, the pieces are highly sophisticated in their construction. And though Moser has been influenced by Shaker and Japanese furniture makers, the elegant and graceful lines give each piece an aesthetic all its own.In Legacy in Wood, Thomas Moser reflects on his long career and offers his thoughts on creativity, inspiration, and his design aesthetic. It gives an intimate look into the life and work of a pioneering craftsman, whose example shows that you can build a career working with your hands the old-fashioned way.Thos. Moser remains an iconic Maine company and holds to its traditional Yankee origins. The shop remains a family-run and oriented company. All of Moser’s sons have worked in the shop, and all but one are still there as master craftsmen and designers. The other employees have been with the company an average of 20 years—a clear reflection of the value Moser puts on his workers and the respect and love for their work they give in return. Yet the timeless appeal of the furniture has given Moser nationwide recognition and allowed the company to open galleries and show rooms in Boston, Greenwich, New York, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.

A Storied Past: Collections of the Historic Odessa - Philip Zimmerman - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

A Storied Past: Collections of the Historic Odessa captures the historical character and significance of two important late-18 th -century houses, each of which retains a high percentage of original furnishings and locally made objects. Over the past several years, the collections have undergone careful examination and interpretation. One hundred are published along with four interpretive chapters. Relatively few historic sites have received this level of investigative treatment. Additionally, several of the hitherto-unpublished objects relate to others already in the decorative and fine arts lexicon. Using rich archival and genealogical sources, Philip D. Zimmerman brings to light here for the first time an extraordinary array of decorative and fine arts from the collections at the Historic Odessa Foundation. This well-documented group of family objects provides an intimate glimpse into the daily life of members of the Corbit and Wilson families in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and also sheds light on the history of Odessa, Delaware, and the larger region. Particularly strong holdings of furniture made by John Janvier and his talented sons and nephew allow informative contrasts with products made in Delaware, Philadelphia, and elsewhere. Needlework and other textiles made by Corbit and Wilson women characterize their handiwork. Other objects tell other stories. Some, labeled by their nineteenth-century owners for posterity, document evolving trends in early collecting and historic preservation. The richly illustrated book includes more than 200 photographs, including many details and historic images, along with careful physical descriptions and historical documentation. Meticulously researched and elegantly written, A Storied Past illuminates a wealth of furnishings, works of art, and artifacts with common provenances and interlocking histories and places them into the artistic, social, and historical contexts of their time. The collections documented here furnish the Corbit-Sharp (1774) and Wilson-Warner (1769) houses, built on adjoining lots by a tanner and a merchant and now maintained by the Historic Odessa Foundation. Subsequent generations valued and preserved the two houses and many furnishings. The Wilson house opened in 1923 as the first historic house museum in Delaware. The Corbit house remained in family hands until H. Rodney Sharp bought it in 1938 to preserve it. Furniture owned in the family of John Janvier, the noted cabinetmaker in Odessa, was added in the 1970s, and the Foundation has continued to acquire Corbit and Wilson family furnishings as well as locally made furniture in the years since. Those interested in historic houses and late 18 th and early 19 th century life, American antique collectors (especially of furniture), and those with local interests will find this book interesting.

Old Philadelphia Houses on Society Hill, 1750–1840 - Elizabeth B. Mccall - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Old Philadelphia Houses on Society Hill, 1750–1840 - Elizabeth B. Mccall - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Officially known as Washington Square Park, Philadelphia’s Society Hill district contains an impressive number of eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century houses—perhaps as many as any other comparable area in the United States. This book presents, in text and pictures, the stories of its outstanding Colonial and Early American mansions and dwellings and simple row houses; its churches and other exceptional historic buildings. Old Philadelphia Houses on Society Hill contains both notes and illustrations on the design and architectural details of early Philadelphia row houses. There are also enlightening chapters devoted to such famous places as Bell’s Court, the Drinker House and Drinker’s Court, the Head House and Old Market, the Hill-Physick-Keith House and the Latta House, Old Pine Street Church and the Pennsylvania Hospital, the Man Full of Trouble Inn and many others, all complemented by photos. Featured are the uses of brick and the traditional design and decoration of the period’s interiors, showing antique furniture and prevailing modes of interior decoration. The 150 photographs strike a nice balance of exteriors and interiors, showing characteristic basics and details of structure and charming furniture pieces and accessories of old-time daily living. Tidbits of information concerning such personages as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Dr. Benjamin Rush and other eminent Americans are scattered throughout the book.
