Representing 9/11 - - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

As the horrific events of September 11, 2001, slip deeper into the past, the significance of 9/11 remains a global cultural touchstone. Initially, filmmakers, writers, and other artists wrangled with its meaning, often relying on fantastical, ethnic, or exceptionalist themes to address the psychic dread of the terrorist attacks. Over time, however, more nuanced and socio-historical perspectives about 9/11 and its impact on America and the world have emerged. In Representing 9/11: Trauma, Ideology, and Nationalism in Literature, Film, and Television, prominent authors from a variety of disciplines demonstrate how emergent American and international texts expand upon and complicate the initial post-9/11 canon. Editor Paul Petrovic has assembled a collection of essays that broadens our understanding of how popular culture has addressed 9/11, particularly as it has evolved over time. Contributors bring fresh readings to popular novels, such as Jonathan Lethem’s Chronic City and Jonathan Franzen’s Freedom; films like Zero Dark Thirty and This Is the End; and television shows such as 24 and Homeland. Showcasing a diverse range of viewpoints, essays in this collection assess, among other topics, how African American identity is challenged by post-9/11 allegories; how superhero films foretell the inevitability of city-wide destruction by terrorists; and how shows like Breaking Bad problematize ideas of liberalism and masculinity. Though primarily aimed at scholars, Representing 9/11 seeks to engage readers interested in how various forms of media have interpreted the events and aftermath of the terrorist attacks in 2001.

Bush's War - Jim A. Kuypers - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Immediately after the attacks of September 11, 2001, Americans looked to President Bush for words of leadership. In his most formal reply of the day, he said, "Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts. The victims were in airplanes, or in their offices; secretaries, businessmen and women, military and federal workers; moms and dads, friends and neighbors. Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror." The stark tone of Bush''s speech suggested the promise of more words to come from the president, and it is these words that Bush''s War addresses. While many books have offered a take on the attacks of 9/11 and their impact upon American society, one area has been comparatively ignored: presidential justifications for war in the age of terrorism. Specifically, what did President Bush say to justify American military actions in the post–9/11 world? And how did the public hear what he said, especially as it was filtered through the news media? The eloquent and thoughtful Bush''s War shows how public perception of what the president says is shaped by media bias. Jim A. Kuypers compares Bush''s statements with press coverage, arguing that the nature of American public knowledge concerning our role in the world has been changed—not by 9/11, but by the subsequent argumentative back-and-forth between Bush and the press.

Using Literature to Support Skills and Critical Discussion for Struggling Readers: Grades 3-9 - Nancy S. Williams - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield -

Using Literature to Support Skills and Critical Discussion for Struggling Readers: Grades 3-9 - Nancy S. Williams - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield -

Emphasizing the need to develop higher-level thinking skills and critical discussion with intermediate and middle school struggling readers, Williams uses quality children''s literature as a springboard to help readers: understand and use descriptive vocabulary and figurative language, make personal connections with text, create and solve text related mathematical problems, promote an active, engaged discussion and critical analysis of the story and the important issues raised in text, extend meaning through research and writing, art, and drama. To help teachers match student to text, literature selections are categorized according to interest (e.g., mystery, sports, humor, identity/solving problems), genre, and include reading level, interest level, and number of pages. Discussion questions and extension activities_specific to over 100 children''s literature selections_provide opportunities for students to ask questions, discuss and use descriptive language, make predictions and inferences, evaluate story elements, and critically reflect on character perspectives and social issues raised in the text. All questions are appropriate for individual work, special education classrooms, general education and inclusion classrooms, and help teachers facilitate literature discussion groups, book club discussion and response writing, self-regulated reading, guided reading, and whole class discussions.
