Hydrangea Arborescens Invincibelle Pink Annabelle

Hydrangea Arborescens Invincibelle Pink Annabelle

Hydrangea Arborescens Invincibelle Pink Annabelle, more simply known as Pink Annabelle, is an Arborescens variety of hydrangea with large, show-stopping pink blooms. Pink Annabelle is a pink version of the very popular white Annabelle hydrangea known for its easy growing habits and fabulous blooms. Pink Annabelle is also easy to grow, and has been bred to retain its dramatic pink shade no matter what the soil Ph.Pink Annabelle’s leaves emerge in spring, and they provide an understated backdrop for the pink blooms that reach up to thirty centimetres in diameter. The full rounded heads emerge in early summer as a hot luminous pink before softening to a baby pink. Pink Annabelle flowers throughout the summer and often into autumn sometimes only dropping its pink blooms when frosts arrive.Hydrangea Arborescens Invincibelle Pink Annabelle will reach a height of 1 -1.5 metres if well cared for. How Hardy is Hydrangea Arborescens Invincibelle Pink Annabelle?Pink Annabelle is full hardy in the UK and can be grown in full sun to partial shade although it does prefer morning sun and afternoon shade in very hot summers as sunshine can fade its blooms. Very windy areas may find the flowers are shaken loose or damaged. How To Use Hydrangea Arborescens Invincibelle Pink AnnabellePink Annabelle is a bright addition to the flower border. Its eye-catching colour goes best with white shades, and because the flowers last all summer it’s a great performer. Pink Annabelle can be grown very successfully in deep pots on the patio too, preferring ericaceous compost. Use her as a one off show-stopper or as matching bookends for an archway or door. How To Care For Hydrangea Arborescens Invincibelle Pink AnnabellePink Annabelle prefers a sunny to semi-shade position and good quality soil. Soil does not change her blooms as with other hydrangeas, so dig in lots of well-rotted organic matter before planting out, ensuring it’s well mixed with the surrounding soil. It’s not necessary to feed Pink Annabelle and try to avoid overwatering her because the extra nutrients can make the flowers grow so large that the branches cannot support their weight. A yearly mulch or compost is sufficient. If Pink Annabelle becomes too large or you need to maintain her size, prune back excess branches after flowering has finished. This cultivar blooms on new wood, unlike other hydrangeas that blooms on the previous year so don’t be afraid to prune back hard. Pink Annabelle is high-impact low-effort plant that deserves a space in every garden.  If you’re a lover of pink flowers Pink Annabelle is set to become your new garden favourite.

Pinus Nigra Spielberg Black Pine Spielberg Dwarf Black Pine. Dwarf Conifers

Pinus Nigra Spielberg Black Pine Spielberg Dwarf Black Pine. Dwarf Conifers

Pinus Nigra Spielberg or Black Pine Spielberg. Black Pines sometimes referred to as Austrian pines are evergreen conifers that originate from Turkey, North West Africa and Southern Europe, but they have adapted well to life in the UK. This evergreen is Pinus Nigra Spielberg, a naturally occurring black pine hybrid that is perfect for coastal and rock gardens. A dwarf conifer, this compact black pine grows slowly, reaching a height of just 1.5 metres in ten years. As it grows Black Pine Spielberg produces very long soft needles, which are partially twisted and interesting to touch. These needles are a rich green shade, particularly in winter when the end of summer heralds a rapid push of new growth. This is a soft looking dwarf conifer giving a shaggy effect. If left alone unclipped it will grow into a pyramid shape with a flat top. Black Pine Spielberg is one of the hardiest plants you can buy. Originating from places with extremes of cold and hot weather this black pine will weather all temperatures if it is kept from water-logged conditions. Perfect for rock gardens, Japanese features and coastal designs with its dark brown and black bark, it fits into any scheme that includes stones, small sculptural shrubs, alpines and heath land effects. The year round green needles contrast nicely with white stones and pebbles, and it stands out against a wash washed wall or fence. Pinus Nigra Spielberg fares well in windy conditions so it is a good choice for exposed areas. It prefers sun, and will grow best in a sunny situation, but it will tolerate partial shade too.  Pot grown specimens are versatile as you can move them around your garden in winter months to cover a bare spot. They are showy on either side of your front door in the colder months, and the small size means they remain light and easy to transport. This compact pine will grow in most soils, or in a large pot if it is well watered during hot spells and kept on feet to avoid water logging. No pruning is necessary as Black Pine Spielberg grows in a compact tidy shape, but fertilising with well-rotted manure will boost its growth and brighten the needles. This is an interesting low growing pine with plenty of structure and hardiness for a year-round garden. If you need shape and architectural lines in a rock garden, or want to keep your outside spaces interesting when the perennials have died back, Pinus Nigra Spielberg is an attractive low-maintenance choice.

Leucothoe Red Lips. Switch Ivy Evergreen Shrub London, UK

Leucothoe Red Lips. Switch Ivy Evergreen Shrub London, UK

Leucothoe Red Lips also known as the Switch Ivy has evergreen glossy slim leaves with stunning dark pink to red highlights over the autumn months. Leucothoe Red Lips is a relatively compact leafy shrub. It is a low growing evergreen, naturally forming an attractive dome shape shrub. It prefers a moist acidic soil in partial shade or full shade. When planted against a backdrop of green foliage, the reddish hues of Leucothoe Red Lips leaves make a striking visual impact in the garden.  Frequently called Switch Ivy, the Leucothoe Red Lips grows to a height of 30 to 50 centimeters and a width of 30 to 50 centimeters. Over time it forms a compact mound. The shrub grows at a slow rate and may take many years to attain its full growth potential. It does not tolerate pruning well and should never be trimmed. During the late spring and early summer months, Leucothoe Red Lips produces long, arching flower spikes. The blossoms’ white colourations are a stark contrast to the shrub’s reddish leaves. The flowers have a mild, sweet fragrance that most people find pleasing. Choose a partially shady or full shade planting location as Switch Ivy does not tolerate full sun. It grows well in dappled shade beneath trees or as a border plant beside a structure which affords it protection from any sunlight. The petite size of Switch Ivy also makes it an ideal container plant for balconies or patios. Once planted in a container, it rarely requires repotting. The Leucothoe Red Lips shrubs require acidic soil conditions to truly thrive. The soil should be rich in organic material. It cannot sustain periods of drought and prefers evenly moist soil at all times. When first planted, the shrub requires frequent watering until fully established. After the shrub grows adequate roots, it is a hardy plant and needs hardly any care to flourish. In the autumn, the shrub’s foliage takes on striking hues of red and pink. During the drab days of winter, the colourful foliage of the Leucothoe Red Lips shrub stands out. It is a highly frost-tolerant and can flourish throughout the winter months in regions with relatively mild weather. Switch Ivy works well below structural plants such as topiary spirals including these Thuya Spirals or Yew Spirals. As it likes acidic match it up with azaleas such as Azalea Japonica Hot Shot.

Akebia quinata Cream Form. Chocolate Vine Cream Form Climber

Akebia Quinata Cream Form is a hardy semi-evergreen vine also known as Chocolate Vine Cream Form. It has much to recommend it to gardeners, both for its long-lasting foliage and beautiful spring flowers. Native to China, Japan and Korea, Akebia Quinata Cream Form was first grown in the UK in 1845 and has remained popular ever since. The new leaves emerge tinged with bronze in the early spring, followed from March to May with beautiful clusters of white flowers with purple centres which smell deliciously of vanilla, with the fragrance intensifying in the evening. Rarely, the flowers will be followed by edible purple fruit, but it takes a warm spring and hot summer, as well as cross-pollination, to achieve that. Prune back immediately after flowering to allow next year’s buds to form. Akebia quinata Cream Form will grow happily in full sun, or partial or full shade, in a sheltered or exposed position. Avoid an east aspect to prevent the flower buds from being nipped by frost in the early spring. It will tolerate any soil type or ph as long as the soil is moist but well-drained. Cydonia Oblonga Vranja or Quince Vranja, is a beautiful single variety quince that produces sweet-smelling flowers and large showy fragrant fruit, golden-yellow when ripe. The RHS has given Vranja the Award of Garden Merit. A small deciduous fruit tree, Quince Vranja is a popular choice for its strong, upright habit. Its leaves are grey-green with a fluffy texture beneath, and they turn an attractive buttery yellow before falling in autumn. Beautiful pale pink flowers appear in May. They are bowl-shaped and showy measuring up to 5 cm across. These blooms turn into the pale green fruits that gradually sun-ripen into golden-yellow quince in late autumn. They are extremely fragrant and attractive fruits. How Hardy Is Cydonia Oblonga Vranja?Quince are native to south-western Asia and are particularly abundant in Iran and Serbia. This means they are used to harsh, cold winters and hot summers. Although this is a hardy shrub that will tolerate wet and cold conditions of the UK, during early spring the flowers are susceptible to late frosts. How To Use Cydonia Oblonga VranjaThis is the best variety of quince to fan train against a sunny wall, but it can also be grown as a shrub or small tree. Although most gardeners grow quince for the edible fruit, they are decorative and fragrant enough to provide a focal point from spring to late autumn. The versatile Quince Vranja looks stunning as a stand-alone shrub in an ornamental lawn, as part of a deep flower border, or trained against a wall. It will reach a maximum height of four metres and similar spread, but this will take ten to twenty years depending on growing conditions. Cydonia Oblonga Vranja is self fertile, but several quince of a different variety means chances of pollination, and therefore fruit, are even greater. How To Care For Cydonia Oblonga VranjaThis is a tough quince but warm conditions are needed to maximise fruit ripening, so choose a sunny spot for your Quince Vranja. Quince will tolerate most soils preferring moisture tentative, but not water-logged.  A thick layer of well -rotted manure in early spring will help produce fruit and keep it healthy.  Little pruning is required, but if you are fan-training tie back stems and cut out any forward growing or damaged shoots in late winter or early spring.

Elaeagnus Angustifolia, also known as Oleaster or Russian olive, is an incredibly tough tree which will survive almost any type of growing conditions, and will be especially successful in the most challenging climates in the UK!  Whether grown as a specimen plant in a sheltered city garden or as windbreak by the sea, Elaeagnus Angustifolia will come through with flying colours!Native to Russia and Iran, Elaeagnus Angustifolia has been grown in the UK since the 1500s. The thorny stems bear silver, fragrant leaves, and produce small white flowers with a honey scent in June, which are a valuable pollen source for bees. Silver-orange berries later appear in the autumn which, while edible, are mostly of value for attracting birds. Oleaster will tolerate considerable pruning, and can even be cut right back to the ground. If planting Elaeagnus Angustifolia as a hedge, space plants 35-75 cm apart. It will thrive in a hot, dry spot such as a patch of gravel where little else will grow. On a larger property, Elaeagnus Angustifolia makes an effective security hedge, as its thorns will deter intruders, either animal or human, and can be employed as a windbreak to provide shelter for other, more delicate plants.  Elaeagnus Angustifolia is a great choice for gardens across the UK because of its resilience in difficult conditions, as well as its beautiful foliage and flowers. Calycanthus Venus Carolina Allspice Sweetshrub Venus

Calycanthus Venus Carolina Allspice Sweetshrub Venus

Calycanthus Venus or Sweetshrub VenusCalycanthus Venus, also referred to as Sweetshrub Venus or Carolina Allspice, is a deciduous shrub that grows to a height of 2.5 to 4 meters and a width of 2.5 to 4 meters. The foliage is truly large and eye-catching. Each oblong leaf measures up to 15 centimetres in length. During the autumn, the leaves turn a brilliant hue of yellow. The foliage and flowers are somewhat deer and rabbit resistant. When the spring weather starts to warm up the atmosphere, Sweetshrub Venus develops a bevy of buds. The buds are plump and light green in colour. From late spring well into summer, Calycanthus Venus produces a virtually non-stop display of flowers. The flowers are reminiscent of the blooms found on a magnolia tree. Each large, cup-shaped flower is highly fragrant. Many people say that the blooms smell like a combination of watermelon and strawberry. The blooms are white with yellow and purple centres. The petals are strap like, large, and appear warlike. For best growth, plant Sweetshrub Venus in a location that offers full sun or partial shade. However, in areas with very hot summers it is preferable to plant the shrub in partial shade to prevent the leaves from developing a brown margin from too much sun exposure. Avoid planting the shrub in full shade or it tends to grow in a vine like fashion and bear very few, if any, flowers. In windy areas, pick a sheltered location to protect the shrub from cold or drying winds. Choose a planting site for the Calycanthus Venus that is well-draining with ample organic material. Unlike many shrubs, it will survive in clay. It grows well in acidic or neutral soil. During the first year, keep the soil moist but not overly saturated to encourage ample root growth. After the first year, Carolina Allspice is relatively drought tolerant but the foliage will dry out and turn brown around the margins if exposed to the parched soil for very long. Sweetshrub Venus can be pruned to maintain its overall size and shape. Old shoots may be cut to the ground to encourage new growth. Pruning the ends of new shoots promotes branching growth. It features a moderate growth rate. Carolina Allspice typically takes five to ten years to reach its full growth potential. Plant Sweetshrub Venus in an area of the landscape where its foliage and blooms can be appreciated. It makes an ideal specimen shrub or can be grouped to create a large display. Calycanthus Venus looks fantastic in a cottage garden or formal landscape.
