Informed Consent to Abortion - Caterina Milo - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Informed Consent to Abortion - Caterina Milo - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Traditionally the abortion debate has focused on the status of the foetus and the decisions available to pregnant women in isolation. In Informed Consent to Abortion, Caterina Milo argues that this politically polarised debate has neglected the crucial component of the decision-making process: Informed Consent (IC). Whereas in other aspects of healthcare law the IC process has received increasing attention and been the subject of much litigation, the abortion law has fallen behind. IC has been often neglected and the process of decision-making has been undermined. Caterina Milo provides a legal and ethical framework of abortion law and professional guidelines by critically analysing the implications of the 2015 UK Supreme Court judgment in Montgomery v Lanarkshire Health Board on Informed Consent. She discusses the key potentials and challenges within three major areas of domestic law in England and Wales: the law on abortion, the tort law of negligence, and relevant professional guidelines on consent. Milo argues that these three areas have neglected the decision-making process and a change in approach is needed. Throughout the book, Milo sheds light on problems that emerge from the intersection between reproductive law and human rights law, discussing each in relation to the health-related ethical and policy debates in the domestic, European and US context. In turn, she addresses difficult questions posed by failure to comply with information disclosure and understanding standards in the abortion context. Milo critically assesses the role of clinicians in the abortion context, challenging the current legal and policy approach.Informed Consent to Abortion contributes not only to philosophical and theoretical issues, but also to practical and applied ethics in medicine and law, both nationally and internationally. Caterina Milo grounds the theoretical debate in the realities of how the law presently responds, and how it should respond, to key ethical values informing contemporary medicine and health.

The Spy and the State - Jeffrey P. Rogg - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Spy and the State - Jeffrey P. Rogg - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

A novel and comprehensive narrative of American intelligence from the Revolutionary War to the present day.Intelligence is all around us. We read about it in the news, wonder who is spying on us through our phones or computers, and want to know what is happening in the shadows. The US Intelligence Community or IC, as insiders call it, is more powerful than ever, but also more vulnerable than it has been in decades. It is facing the threat of rival intelligence services from countries like Russia and China while fighting to keep up with new technology and the private sector. Still, the IC''s greatest struggle is always with the American people, who expect it to keep the country safe but not at the cost of their liberty. Arriving on the fiftieth anniversary of the "Year of Intelligence," The Spy and the State tells the complete history of American intelligence from the Revolutionary War to the present day. Based on original research and a new interpretation of US history, this masterful book by Jeffrey Rogg explores the origins and evolution of intelligence in America, including its overlooked role in some of the key events that shaped the nation. Along the way, Rogg identifies the historical underpinnings of intelligence controversies that have shaken the country to its constitutional foundations and have resurfaced in recent years. Moving beyond institutional histories of the FBI and CIA, he introduces the concept of US civil-intelligence relations to explain the interaction between intelligence and the society it serves. While answering questions from the past, The Spy and the State poses new questions for the future that the United States must confront as intelligence gains ever greater importance in the twenty-first century.

Today, most, if not at all, microelectronic circuit design is carried out with the aid of a computer-aided circuit analysis program such as SPICE. SPICE, an acronym for Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis, is considered by many to be the de-facto industrial standard for computer-aided circuit analysis for microelectronic circuits, mainly because it is used by the majority of IC designers in North America today. It is reasonable to say that to master electronic circuit design, one must also develop a fair amount of expertise in a circuit analysis program such as SPICE. It is therefore our aim in this text to describe how SPICE is used to analyse microelectronic circuits, and more importantly, outline how SPICE is used in the process of design itself. There is a tendency for new designers of electronic circuits to be overwhelmed by the analysis capability of a circuit analysis program such as SPICE, and ignore the thought-process provided by a hand analysis using simple models for the transistors. Experience has shown that this generally leads to poor designs because most of the design effort is spent blindly searching for ways to improve the design using a brute-foce hit-and-miss approach. It is our intention in this book to avoid this pitfall and teach the reader what not to do with SPICE. This is accomplished by keying each example of this text to those presented in Microelectronic Circuits, Third Edition, by Sedra and Smith, where a complete hand analysis is provided. In this way, the insight provided by a hand analysis is readily available to our readers. All examples in this text are also available on-line via the world-wide-web site http://www.macs.ee.mcgill.ca/~roberts/.

Catholic Higher Education - John J. Piderit - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Catholic higher education in the United States is undergoing dramatic changes, driven largely by the virtual disappearance of nuns, brothers, and priests from Catholic university campuses. Today, Catholic colleges and universities are dealing with critical questions about what constitutes Catholic collegiate identity. What are appropriate ways to engage the Catholic tradition across all sectors of university life? What constitutes a critical mass of committed and knowledgeable Catholics necessary to maintain religious identity? What is an appropriate level of knowledge and religious commitment for those who lead, govern, and teach at Catholic institutions and how do they acquire it? Many people have strong - and strongly differing - opinions about the current state of Catholic higher education. Melanie M. Morey and John J. Piderit, S.J., wade into these waters with a study of 124 senior administrators at 33 Catholic colleges and universities across the United States. Exceptionally candid appraisals by administrators across a varied landscape attest that a cultural crisis is looming at a number of Catholic institutions.Morey and Piderit offer the first in-depth cultural analysis of the Catholic character of Catholic universities and colleges at a crucial time for these institutions. With new research and practical applications, this book is an invaluable resource for Catholic educators and anyone concerned about the future of Catholic higher education.

Flora of North America: Volume 7: Magnoliophyta: Dilleniidae, Part 2 - - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Flora of North America Volume 7 is the seventh volume of nineteen on dicotyledons to be published in the Flora of North America series. It treats more than 910 species classified among 114 genera in five families in the following two orders of the subclass Dilleniidae: Salicales (Willow order) and Capparales (Caper order). The families covered in Volume 7 include Salicaceae, Capparaceae, Brassicaceae, Moringaceae, and Resedaceae. Each genus has representative species illustrated with a line drawing that, in combination with keys and descriptions, will facilitate identifications of these groups of plants. Even though many genera of mustards (Brassicaceae-nearly 100 genera with c. 750 species) are known in the flora area due to introduced species, many quite species-rich genera-Draba (140 species), Boechera (109 spp.), Physaria (90 spp.), Lepidium (40 spp.), Streptanthus (33 spp.), and Rorippa (23 spp.)-have many endemic species that are known from quite restricted areas within North America. The volume includes identification keys, descriptions, line drawings, and ecological characteristics for each of the species; distribution maps for the native and established species; and a list of the synonyms currently in use for the accepted names. The treatments, each of which has been extensively reviewed, are based on a combination of original observations and critical review of the literature.

Clinical Studies in Medical Biochemistry - - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

This text uses a case-study approach to present the core principles of biochemistry and molecular biology in the context of human disease to students who will be involved in patient care. The 33 cases are carefully selected to cover key concepts and common diseases. Each chapter provides a specific patient report that includes the relevant history, pertinent clinical laboratory data, physical findings, and subsequent diagnosis. This is followed by a comprehensive discussion of the normal biochemical processes and reactions pertaining to the case, along with the pathophysiological mechanisms of the disease. In this third edition of the book, a new co-editor has aided in the substantially revised and more targeted selection of cases. The whole volume is now clearly focussed on intermediary metabolism and other topics central to biochemistry. There are new chapters on topics such as collagen structure, mitochondrial metabolism, and hyperhomocysteinemia and vascular disease. There is also more coverage of nutrional biochemistry, including new chapters on protein-calorie malnutrition, obesity, vitamin A deficiency, and iron metabolism. The best cases were retained from the previous edition, and have been completely rewritten and updated to include recent advances in diagnostic biochemistry and the status of current therapies. Although the first edition was intended primarily for medical students, through the years the book has proven useful for a wide variety of students interested in the health science professions.

Opening Bazin - Herve Joubert Laurencin - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Andre Bazin remains one of the most read, most studied, and most engaging figures ever to have written about film. He is indisputably the cinema''s most influential philosopher-critic. Always an important presence within cinema theory, Bazin, who died just over fifty years ago, has seen a massive resurgence of interest among critics, scholars, and students of every persuasion. The journal that he founded in 1951, Cahiers du Cinéma, marked the anniversary year of his death by republishing a dozen of his uncollected essays while Film Comment and Film Quarterly in the US published memorial issues; conferences were held worldwide. Last year also saw the opening of an electronic Bazin archive which consists of his entire output of 2600 pieces on a fascinating array of topics. These events represent an ideal springboard for a major collection about Bazin. The proposed volume will include essays from the best scholars of French cinema in the US and abroad. The contributors represent a pantheon of several generations of the very best film scholars: Gunning, Frodon, Margulies, Conley, MacCabe, Narboni, Vernet, Finally, Fifty years after his death, André Bazin''s full range of articles has been catalogued. Armed with this, 33 scholars from four continents have opened Bazin up in this new century, tracing his lineage, debating his aesthetics, locating him in the rich cultural moment of postwar France, and tracking the effect of his thought around the world. This volume reinforces his preeminence as the most gifted and influential of all writers on film.

Behavioral Health Services with High-Risk Infants and Families - Joanna C.m. (assistant Professor Of Clinical Psychology In Psychiatry Cole - Bog -

There are relatively high rates of complications in the fetal and neonatal periods (1 in 33 fetuses born with birth defects and 1 in 10 preterm births in the US). With advances in maternal-fetal care and growing services and life-extending medical innovations in the neonatal period, more families are presenting to Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) and often for longer lengths of time. The growing recognition of mental health needs of families and providers in fetal care centers, NICUs, and neonatal follow-up programs has led to a quickly increasing presence of behavioral health providers in these settings. Behavioral Health Services with High-Risk Infants & Families is a practical guide for mental health clinicians working in fetal care, NICU, and neonatal follow-up care. The book provides a broad overview of common medical conditions in fetal and NICU settings (e.g., congenital anomalies, premature birth, hypoxic injury in the perinatal period), prevalence, and symptoms of behavioral health challenges, specific considerations for assessment and intervention, and cross-cutting issues to assist the clinician with optimizing behavioral health care integration with mothers, partners, babies, and families. Additionally, information about the provision of psychosocial support and education to staff is also included. The text represents a comprehensive, practical resource for behavioral health clinicians working with pregnant women, partners, infants, families, and providers in perinatal and neonatal intensive care settings. The book features de-identified case examples, trauma-informed care prompts/scripts, specific questions for assessment and intakes, key medical terms, resource guides, and reference lists.

Feast of Excess - George Cotkin - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Feast of Excess - George Cotkin - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Written in a lively and accessible style, Feast of Excess traces in brief chapters the history of the New Sensibility in America. The book opens with John Cage in 1952, experimenting with an excess of minimalism in his musical piece of silence, 4'' 33" and in his chaotic, maximalist work Theater Piece, No. 1. Feast concludes in 1974 with performance artist Chris Burden who, among other things, had himself shot in the arm, crucified to a VW bug, and spent days scrunched up in a locker. Each chapter, devoted to a single year, allows for the moment of creation to be fixed in the biography of the artist(s), the historical moment, and the emerging tradition of the New Sensibility. This New Sensibility was predicated upon excess, pushing things, going too far, whether in the direction of minimalism or maximalism. This excess was, in general, directed at shared concerns, including violence, madness, sexuality, confession, the performative, breaking down barriers between artist and audience, and between high and low culture. It was about liberation. The New Sensibility emerged across varied artistic endeavors in the early 1950s before being named as a specific phenomenon in the mid-1960s by both Susan Sontag and Tom Wolfe. By the middle 1970s, this excess in American culture had become established as the norm. It remains the essence of our culture today, for good and ill. The excess at the center of the New Sensibility can disgust, at times, but when it is leavened with a sense of limits, it can result in cultural products of the highest quality, as well as resist easy consumption and commodification.

A Law Book for the Diaspora - John Van Seters - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

A Law Book for the Diaspora - John Van Seters - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

The foundation for all scholarly study in biblical law is the shared assumption that the Covenant Code, as contained in Exodus 20:23-22:33 is the oldest code of laws in the Hebrew Bible, and that all other laws are later revisions of that code. In A Law Book for the Diaspora, John Van Seters strikes at that foundation. He argues that those laws in the Covenant Code that are similar to Deuteronomy and the Holiness Code are in fact later than both of these, dependent on them as sources, and therefore cannot be taken as the foundation of Hebrew Law. After setting forth his radical hypothesis, Van Seters proceeds to offer a vigorous defense of it by means of a detailed and systematic comparison of the Covenant Code and the other biblical legal codes. He shows that his chronology provides an entirely new understanding of the laws. Instead of fundamental laws for Israelite society, he argues, the Covenant Code must be placed in the context of the Babylonian exile. In this context they become diaspora laws with minimal cultic requirements, strong humanitarian concerns that include social contact with those outside the Jewish community, and little in the way of independent political structures. They are not village laws or primitive religious laws but laws for a semi-autonomous community within the larger imperial rule. The effect of this reading is to challenge not only the traditional dating of law codes in the Hebrew Bible, but also the conventional understanding of the history of ancient Israel. A persuasive presentation of a controversial thesis, A Law Book for the Diaspora will have a dramatic and far-reaching impact on the study of Hebrew Law. No student of the Hebrew Bible can afford to ignore it.

The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri - Dante Alighieri - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri - Dante Alighieri - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

In the early 1300s, Dante Alighieri set out to write the three volumes which make the up The Divine Comedy. Purgatorio is the second volume in this set and opens with Dante the poet picturing Dante the pilgrim coming out of the pit of hell. Similar to the Inferno (34 cantos), this volume is divided into 33 cantos, written in tercets (groups of 3 lines). The English prose is arranged in tercets to facilitate easy correspondence to the verse form of the Italian on the facing page, enabling the reader to follow both languages line by line. In an effort to capture the peculiarities of Dante''s original language, this translation strives toward the literal and sheds new light on the shape of the poem. Again the text of Purgatorio follows Petrocchi''s La Commedia secondo l''antica vulgata, but the editor has departed from Petrocchi''s readings in a number of cases, somewhat larger than in the previous Inferno, not without consideration of recent critical readings of the Comedy by scholars such as Lanza (1995, 1997) and Sanguineti (2001). As before, Petrocchi''s punctuation has been lightened and American norms have been followed. However, without any pretensions to being "critical", the text presented here is electic and being not persuaded of the exclusive authority of any manuscript, the editor has felt free to adopt readings from various branches of the stemma. One major addition to this second volume is in the notes, where is found the Intercantica - a section for each canto that discusses its relation to the Inferno and which will make it easier for the reader to relate the different parts of the Comedy as a whole.

Adolescence - Joy G. Dryfoos - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Of the 33 million adolescents in the United States, almost 10 million are at risk of failing to become responsible adults. They attend schools that do not serve their needs, lack the support of caring adults, and, as a result, are alienated from mainstream society. African-American and Hispanic children, increasingly segregated in disadvantaged neighbourhoods, are particularly vulnerable. In Adolescence: Growing Up in America Today, a follow-up to Joy Dryfoos''s landmark volume, Adolescents at Risk (OUP, 1991), Joy Dryfoos and Carol Barkin take a close look at the lives of young people, identify some of their problems, and present solutions based on state-of-the-art prevention and treatment strategies. They examine important issues in adolescents'' lives - sex, violence, drugs, health, mental health, and education. Reviewing successful prevention programs and policy studies, Dryfoos and Barkin demonstrate that we know what to do to prevent high-risk behaviours: young people need to establish relationships with adults; parents need to be involved in their children''s lives; and programs need to be comprehensive, sensitive to cultural differences, and staffed by highly trained personnel.Dryfoos and Barkin argue that turning our backs on adolescents will lead to disturbing consequences: the achievement gap will grow, outcomes will worsen, school systems will struggle with the growing disparities, and we as a nation will fall behind the rest of the world in our capacity to educate our youth. If, however, we decide that we want a better quality of life for our children, we will ensure that every young person has access to an excellent education. Schools, youth workers, and parents cannot alone provide a better quality of life for our adolescents, but each must play a major role, and all must work together. Providing a roadmap for the development and implementation of sound policies for American teenagers in the twenty-first century, this volume is a must-read for anyone interested in the future of our nation''s youth.

Fostering Resilience and Well-Being in Children and Families in Poverty - Valerie Maholmes - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

Fostering Resilience and Well-Being in Children and Families in Poverty - Valerie Maholmes - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

The number of children living in families with incomes below the federal poverty level increased by 33 percent between 2000 and 2009, resulting in over 15 million children living in poverty. Some of these children are able to overcome this dark statistic and break the intergenerational transmission of poverty, offering hope to an otherwise bleak outlook, but this raises the question--how?In Fostering Resilience and Well-Being in Children and Families in Poverty, Dr. Valerie Maholmes sheds light on the mechanisms and processes that enable children and families to manage and overcome adversity. She explains that research findings on children and poverty often unite around three critical factors related to risk for poverty-related adversity: family structure, the presence of buffers that can protect children from negative influences, and the association between poverty and negative academic outcomes, and social and behavioral problems. She discusses how the research on resilience can inform better interventions for these children, as poverty does not necessarily preclude children from having strengths that may protect against its effects. Importantly, Maholmes introduces the concept of "hope" as a primary construct for understanding how the effects of poverty can be ameliorated. At the heart of the book are interviews with family members who have experienced adversity but managed to overcome it through the support of targeted programs and evidence-based interventions. Student leaders provide unique perspectives on the important role that parents and teachers play in motivating youth to succeed. Finally, professionals who work with children and families share their observations on effective interventions and the roles of culture and spirituality in fostering positive outcomes. Excerpts from these interviews bring research to life and help call attention to processes that promote hope and resilience. This book will be invaluable for policymakers, educators, and community and advocacy groups, as well as scholars and students in family studies, human development, and social work.

The Invaded - Alan Mcpherson - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Invaded - Alan Mcpherson - Bog - Oxford University Press Inc - Plusbog.dk

In his 1933 inaugural address, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt stated: "In the field of world policy I would dedicate this nation to the policy of the good neighbor--the neighbor who resolutely respects himself and, because he does so, respects the rights of others." Later that year, he declared, "The definite policy of the United States from now on is one opposed to armed intervention." Why was there a need for Roosevelt to institute the Good Neighbor policy in the Western hemisphere?McPherson answers this question by looking at the United States'' military interventions in Latin America, the longest ever US occupations in the Western hemisphere. In his first book, Alan McPherson examined the roots of anti-Americanism in Latin America during the Cuban Revolution, Panama riots, and US intervention in the Dominican Republic from 1958 to 1966 and delving deeply into the impact of the love-hate ambivalence on US foreign relations. In this new book, he moves backwards in time to explore American occupations of Nicaragua (1912-33), Haiti (1915-34), and the Dominican Republic (1916-24). McPherson proposes not only that opposition to U.S. intervention was more widespread than commonly acknowledged but that anti-imperial movements in the Caribbean basin were primarily responsible for bringing about the end of U.S. occupation, rather than domestic concerns such as the Great Depression or the American public''s lack of stamina for overseas imperial ventures. Studying the qualities of the resisters-urban and rural, female and male, peasants and caudillos (local strongmen)-and the US Marines who occupied their countries, McPherson forms nuanced understandings of the movements, as well as the support they received from Mexico, Cuba, France, and the United States-and posits that the strength of the resistance led to the about-face in US foreign policy. He also looks at the massive movements of opposition to occupations within the US, especially after the First World War, highlighting the divisions between expansionists, including the US military and Wall Street, and those who wished to respect the autonomy of small nations, including the NAACP and the State Department. This broad and nuanced work serves as a much-needed contribution to transnational history, US history, and Latin American history, while shedding historical light on the resistance to US occupations.
