Northman: John Hewitt (1907-87) - W. J. Mccormack - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

This, the first ever biography of John Hewitt, is based on archival material, both personal and literary. In many ways it is also a biography of his wife, Roberta (nee Black), whose manuscript journal is also in the public domain. To establish Hewitt''s late arrival as a poet, the book opens with a chapter recounting his negotiations with a London publisher over a long period and the eventual appearance of No Rebel Word (1949). Successive chapters trace his education, courtship, literary apprenticeship, first employment as a junior gallery curator in Belfast, the political conflicts of the 1930s and then the War Years, his rejection for the post of director in Belfast''s Civic Museum and Gallery, and his utopian commitment to regionalism. Appointment to the Herbert Gallery in Coventry in 1956 brought recognition and confidence. His leanings towards socialist realism came to accommodate abstract art, and he defended the sculptor Barbara Hepworth against the penny-pinching ratepayers. Throughout this two-part career, Hewitt maintained his output as poet, culminating in the Collected Poems (1968). His Irish political commitments never wavered, though he became cautious about forms of nationalism which proclaimed themselves left-wing. Roberta Hewitt''s work for the Coventry Labour Party provided an outlet for her energies and her domestic frustrations. Throughout these forty years, the poetry is kept constantly in view, sometime by reference to individual pieces and their origins, and some by means of longer ''breaks for text'' where more detailed criticism is practised. In 1972, the Hewitts returned to Belfast whenthe Troubles reached an ugly peak. Committed to anti-sectarianism, Hewitt withheld support from all parties, though he took an interest in trade union activity. Publishing (perhaps too much) poetry in his last decade-and-a-half, he died very much in harness.

The Victorian Novel On File - Priyanka Anne Jacob - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

The Victorian Novel On File argues that the nineteenth-century information explosion shapes the novel form. In a world teeming with data, the novel is a storage medium, cluttered with detail and accumulating more than it can use. The fictional things that have been read as insignificant should be seen instead as vessels of information, embedding the text with potential. This study weaves together a formal account of the novel with media and information studies as well as new materialist approaches to objects. Information took material form in the nineteenth century: in Victorian literature, data can be located in bric-a-brac, folded-up papers, semi-precious stones, and rubbish heaps. Yet this information may never be transmitted as knowledge. Instead, the novel offers indefinite storage, gesturing toward the future while holding action and accountability in abeyance. Fallen by the wayside of plot are documents left on file, containers left unopened, stock left on the shelf, and secrets left untold-enacting, this study argues, the Victorian novel''s aesthetics of deferral. In readings of works by Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Wilkie Collins, and Rudyard Kipling, this study illustrates the formal effects of cultural questions about value and meaning, longevity and history, abundance and overwhelm, and keeping and discarding. It closes by showing how these same questions animate the twenty-first century''s information culture as well.

Matrices for Statistics - Michael Healy - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Matrices for Statistics - Michael Healy - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Multiple regression, linear modelling, and multivariate analysis are among the most useful statistical methods for the elucidation of complicated data, and all of them are most easily explained in matrix terms. Anyone concerned with the analysis of data needs to be familiar with these methods and a knowledge of matrices is essential in order to understand the literature in which they are described. This knowledge must include some advanced topics, but can do without much of the material covered by general textbooks of matrix algebra. This book is intended to cover the necessary ground as briefly as possible. Only the simplest of basic mathematics is used, and the book should be accessible to engineers, biologists, and social scientists as well as those with a specifically mathematical background. The text of the first edition has been re-written and revised to take account of recent developments in statistical practice. The more difficult topics have been expanded and the mathematical explanations have been simplified. A new chapter has been included, at readers'' request, to cover such topics as vectorising, matrix calculus and complex numbers. From the reviews of the first edition ''...this should be a valuable handbook for a great variety of statistical users.'' Short Book Reviews of the International Statistics Institute ''...a good reference book for the serious student.'' Journal of the American Statistical Association ''...a very worthwhile addition to anyone''s shelf. Teaching Statistics ''I recommend it.'' Technometrics
