The Power to Care - Erez Zverling - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

What happens when men and women feel powerful in intimate relationships? When does power corrupt and when does it lead to positive consequences, such as increased sensitivity to others' needs, personal growth, and social responsibility? This book offers anyone interested in such questions a clear and accessible depiction of the effects of social power, based on cutting-edge theory and research. The book starts with a general discussion on the ways power influences individuals. The role of one's personality, goals, and culture seem to play a decisive role in whether power leads to benevolent or malevolent consequences. Some effects of power are more intuitively understood (eg: taking from or contributing to a common resource, or aggressive responses in parents who feel powerless), while other effects regard much more surprising phenomena (eg: self-fulfilling prophecies, stopping an annoying fan, or forgiveness for a transgression). Following the description of this social-psychological mechanism, this book discusses the cultural and developmental circumstances in which power is experienced. Culturally acquired gender-roles, experiencing racism, egoistic vs. altruistic motivations, and defensive tendencies -- all influence what men and women want in intimate relationships, and the way power can motivate them to attain their goals. These circumstances may explain the gender differences found in the results of three experiments, described in Chapter 4. In these experiments, men and women in long-term, intimate relationships reacted differently to a temporary sense of power, in terms of their tendency to self-focus, take the perspective of others, and objectify their relationship partners. The last section discusses the seemingly contradictory beliefs of professionals and laymen alike, that power corrupts, but that the empowerment processes yields positive results. In this section, the role of power and empowerment processes is discussed, mainly in macro-level interventions, in intimate partner violence (for both victims and perpetrators), overcoming addiction, and in policy practice (eg: in court verdicts regarding cases of post-divorce relocation of custodial parents).

Binge Drinking in Adolescents & College Students - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Binge Drinking in Adolescents & College Students - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Binge Drinking has been argued to be the number one public health hazard and the primary source of preventable morbidity and mortality for the the more than 6 million college students in the United States. Binge drinking often begins in adolescence and continues into young adulthood. Recent estimates indicate that 1 in 5 adolescents and 1 in 2 college students binge drink. Binge drinking has resulted in numerous alcohol-related tragedies, including acute alcohol poisonings, falls, and automobile collisions, and is often associated with other high-risk behaviours. This comprehensive resource contains all of the newest information that is now known about binge drinking and how this type of alcohol consumption (drinking to get drunk) differs from social drinking and chronic drinking and alcoholism. All of the recent research on this topic are included, such as the results from recent animal studies that indicate that binge drinking may be more damaging to an adolescent brain compared to an adult brain and how changes in trends in alcohol consumption (such as mixing energy drinks with alcohol) maybe be exacerbating this behaviour. finally, recent successful intervention techniques both on the individual level (eg: motivational interviewing in the emergency room) to the institutional level (e.g., programs to reduce binge drinking on college campuses) are described. This book is an excellent resource for any professional who comes in contact with the problems associated with this type of alcohol consumption.

Hyaluronic Acid - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Hyaluronic Acid - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

This book offers a valuable clinical resource for health professionals and researchers. It gives an overview about the pivotal role played by High Molecular Hyaluronic Acid (HMW-HA) during pregnancy and its applications in the gestational period. Hyaluronic acid is a critical component of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and one of the most interesting, versatile and useful natural molecules in almost all areas of biology. As widely reported, HA has a pivotal role in several phases of pregnancy, from fertilisation to labour and it displays several regulatory activities and functional properties based on its different molecular weight. While low molecular weight hyaluronic acid (LMW-HA) is widely used in gynaecology for menopause-related symptoms or in association with physical treatments (eg: radiation therapy) to counteract the onset of adverse events, HMW-HA has been poorly evaluated as clinical treatment. Its physiological presence in the extracellular matrix of all the main organs and tissues involved in pregnancy (uterus, cervix, placenta, decidua, chorion, amnios, ovarium etc..) suggests the importance of this molecule for a successful gestation. Several papers, in particular, shed light on its importance for blastocyst adhesion and implantation, for an efficient immune tolerance and for the correct development of haemo-lymphatic system. It has been demonstrated that HMW-HA has regulatory activity on the PGRMC1 expression, a specific progesterone receptor expressed in maternal and foetal-maternal interface tissues, involved in uterine quiescence. On these premises, the administration of HMW-HA may represent an interesting treatment opportunity for the prevention of recurrent miscarriage and pre-term birth (PTB) in patients with risk factors. The high safety profile of HMW-HA further supports its administration in pregnancy. All these interesting topics will be discussed and deepened in this book, giving the opportunity to explore in detail every aspect of this effective and attractive molecule, thus helping physicians to assess the state of connective tissues in pregnancy and to evaluate the risk for the onset of gestational complications.

Walking the Ground - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Walking the Ground - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Edwin Cole Bearss, born in 1923, is an American World War II wounded warrior of the Greatest Generation. As a U.S. Marine, he was shot four times by the Japanese in the South Pacific, but despite his wounds rose to become a giant among American historians as Chief Historian of the National Park Service and the leading published Civil War Historian as shown in the Ken Burns Civil War series. Today, at 96, he is an eminent history tour guide. In this first book of his memoir, he traces his ancestors, including a relative who was involved in the underground railroad to save Americans from slavery. We see him grow up on a Montana ranch, survive with his family through the Great Depression, and ride a horse to a one-room schoolhouse in below-zero temperatures. When he was ten years old, he would go to Chicago to see Babe Ruth hit a home run in the first All Star Game in 1933. Early in life, his beloved maternal grandmother Sara played Sacajawea with her two Bearss grandchildren as Lewis and Clark. His father, a Montana rancher and U.S. Marine, read Civil War history to him and his brother. These experiences at an early age seeded Ed's love of history, particularly military history, and he would go on to map the progress of armies in the 1935 Italo-Ethiopian War, the 1937 Spanish Civil War, and then track Hitler's conquests of Austria and Czechoslovakia and finally Hitler's attack on Poland. He joined the U.S. Marines as soon as possible after Pearl Harbor, following the example of his father and third cousin "Hiking Hiram" Bearss, a Medal-of-Honor awardee and noted World War I Colonel. Ed describes his efforts to join the Marines, though underage at 17. We follow his path to a string of Pacific Islands, where he and his comrades are strafed by Japanese warplanes and succumbing to malaria and yellow jaundice. We ride with him in a Higgins boat to the Yellow 1 invasion beach on New Britain Island and move with him on point through the jungle terrain. We are with him as hidden Japanese pillboxes open fire on him and his buddies, as he sees them get hit one by one. We hear his thoughts and actions as he saved himself from certain death, and the moment when a few inches of dirt saved his life, his first lesson about the importance of terrain in battle. He describes his buddy's silent deaths, whose voices were forever stilled, that would motivate him to speak for them in later life. We experience his recovery in several hospitals, his return to Montana as a fishing tour guide, college, first jobs and taking his first Civil War tours. Finally, we walk the ground with him at the Shiloh Battlefield, launching his devotion to walking the ground in the National Park Service. He is an example for all Wounded Warriors to never give up.
