Edward FitzGerald’s Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám Revisited: The Wine, the Vine, and the Rose examines an overlooked masterpiece which was a phenomenon in its day. Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, translated by Edward FitzGerald (1809-1883), sold millions of copies between its first publication in 1859 and World War II, becoming one of the best-selling books of all time, only to disappear from the public eye until the age of the Internet revived interest in the work. Russell Brickey synthesizes scholarship and close reading in the first monograph dedicated to the Rubáiyát, taking into account the original poetry of Omar Khayyám (1038-1141), a polyglot who lived in medieval Persia, and the western poetic tradition that informed FitzGerald’s creative palimpsest. These include the Song of Solomon, 17th century Cavalier Poetry, the Sonnet Sequence, and the poems of Alfred Tennyson, William Wordsworth, and others. This book looks at the offshoots of Omar Khayyám and Edward FitzGerald’s poetic brotherhood, the pulp-novels, movies, and poems their poem inspired.

This book suggests that Khiḍr’s Qur''anic story symbolizes these truths by providing a perspective on the tension between materiality and spirituality, the ẓāhir (exoteric) and the bāṭin (esoteric), and human and divine forms of knowledge. Additionally, in this work the Khiḍr narrative is viewed as a source of nourishment for theories that speak to the intersectionality between Islam and other religious traditions.

Corruption, often seen as the main hindrance to development and growth in many societies, has led to greater demand for accountability and transparency in how governments conduct their businesses. This text examines the impact of Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index and whether or not the CPI and hence TI matter. It explores three areas: the world’s political and economic responses and Jamaica’s policy responses to the CPI. Jamaica is selected for a case study due to its high CPI rating from TI; Jamaica is a country that has strong anti-corruption laws but, nonetheless, sees its CPI ranking worsen almost yearly. Taking into consideration the importance scholars and policymakers give to corruption’s effect on development, the findings show that the CPI—the most cited corruption index—does not change the behavior of world’s political and economic policymakers. Although the index is published yearly, there is no measured change as it regards political and economic policymakers. Nonetheless, Jamaican policymakers pay significant attention to their performance on TI’s CPI. Transparency International’s CPI is used as the authoritative tool to assess countries’ corruption perceptions scores by both international governments and several international agencies. The use and reference of TI’s CPI does not translate as the main factor in regards to the increase and or decrease of aid flow. Surprisingly, there was no evidence that the CPI affected the credit rating and or investment flow into Jamaica. It did indicate, however, that TI’s CPI is reflective of the global market perceptions of Jamaica’s economy. Research shows that the index does change policy responses in Jamaica as government officials across varying agencies pay attention to the index and the progression and or worsening of the country’s score.

In the last decades, the Latin American middle class is growing in size while becoming more heterogeneous. Sustained economic growth explains its increasing size, but behind its heterogeneity there is not only the diversification of lifestyles, but also the crystallization of a large process of upward social mobility of second and third generation migrants to capital cities and their incorporation into middle-class positions. In the last decades, these individuals are now part of the different spheres of socialization formerly occupied by the traditional middle class: private schools, college and universities, middle-class jobs and occupations, and traditional middle-class neighborhoods. To explore the genesis of this phenomenon and its consequences, the author studies Residential San Felipe, a quintessential traditional middle-class neighborhood in Lima, Peru, which is currently receiving an important influx of upwardly mobile families. The case of San Felipe shows that inside the contemporary middle class a strong boundary between the “traditional middle class” and the “new middle class” permeates the everyday life of the neighborhood. However, though this difference between the “traditional” and “new middle class” is recognized by all residents of San Felipe, its relevance as well as the elements at the basis of this distinction varies.

They find that identity, spirituality, emotions, and experiences with AIDS knowledge all influence the ways in which these activists approached their community activism work. The authors analyze womanism in detail and propose ways in which this framework can be applied more broadly in examinations of community engagement among women of color, and specifically Black women.
