The book contains stories of many different kinds. Some of them have autobiographic elements, others are totally fictional. One piece is a fairy tale, another begins as a normal story and ends as a farce. A few of the stories have elements of magic realism. One story is about friendship between two university students in the 19th century, another about a nursemaid in Ireland in the 1950s who gets into “difficulties” and is brutally taken care of by nuns. The story that has given name to the collection, begins realistically, changes into magic realism and is from there written in a technique that I would call “double exposure” and then changes again into a dialogue as if from an Elizabethan play. Hvorfor drog så mange danskere vestpå for at søge lykken i det forjættede land Amerika? Det spørgsmål rumsterer den dag i dag stadig i mange familier. Kun spredte brudstykker og anekdoter om disse fjerne slægtninge lever stadig i familiehistorien. Men hvilken skæbne fik de derovre? Det handler denne bog om. Det er en sammenhængende fortælling om fem danske udvandrere i slutningen af 1800-tallet. Husmandsønnen Hans Andersen/Henry Andersen udvandrede 1871 fra Gelsted på Fyn. I løbet af de næste tyve år skabte han sig en enorm formue herovre som fåreavler (20.000 får) og blev en hovedrig mand. Fra et hjemmebesøg I Danmark i 1890 hjembragte han Bartine, der kom fra en nødlidende familie i Vestjylland, som sin husholderske og senere hustru. Sammen bekostede de i de følgende år tre af Bartines mindre søskendes udvandring til Nevada. Handlingen drives frem i et veloplagt og dynamisk sprog, der med humor og lune skildrer sammenholdet og de interne spændinger i familiegruppen og deres mange dramatiske møder med naturkatastrofer, indianere og vilde dyr. Uddrag af bogen Allerede ved lørdagens komsammen i den danske klub, ”Copenhagen Hill”, gik snakken livligt. Det var forlovelsen mellem Henry og Bartine, man snakkede om. Hvor er det dog skønt, at Henry har fået en kone i huset; det var lige det, han trængte til, lød det i fruentimmerflokken. Ja, og så er det sådan en køn pige, og osse dygtig i husgerningen, har jeg hørt sige. Bare hun nu ikke sætter griller i hovedet på vore mænd. Sikke noget sludder at sige, Agnes – i hvert fald ikke hos min Anton. Somme tider tror jeg såmænd, at min den gamle er død, men han lugter bare så mærkeligt, klagede Emma. Henry nærmede sig den lille gruppe for at høre, om de kunne bruge en femtemand. Slå bare røven i sædet, Henry. Det er vel nok et prægtigt kvindfolk, du der har fået tag i. Hende ka’ du da ikke la’ gå frit omkring ret meget længere. Du må se at få hende slæbt til brudeskamlen så hurtigt som muligt. Surely, I vil snart høre nærmere. Om forfatteren Frank Nyboe er født og opvokset i Nr. Nebel i Vestjylland. Han blev student fra Vestjysk Gymnasium i 1965. I 1975 blev han cand.mag. i historie og dansk. Herefter blev han undervisningsassistent på Aarhus Universitet i industrialiseringens gennembrud i USA. Og efter adskillige år som årsvikar ved Skanderborg Amtsgymnasium blev han omsider fastansat ved Aarhus Købmandsskole, hvor han også i en lang årrække bestred hvervet som pædagogisk rådsformand. Ved pensioneringen 2008 besluttede han at virkeliggøre sin livslange drøm at skrive om sine fjerne slægtninge i Nevada. Det kom der denne bog ud af.
