What Form of Government for the European Union and the Eurozone? - - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

What is the form of government of the European Union (EU)? And how is the institutional governance of the Eurozone evolving? These questions have become pressing during the last few years. On the one hand, the Euro-crisis and the legal and institutional responses to it have had major implications on the constitutional architecture of the EU and the Eurozone. On the other hand, the May 2014 elections for the European Parliament and the ensuing struggle to form the European Commission have brought to the fore new tensions in the EU political system. The purpose of this book, which brings together the contributions of EU lawyers, comparative constitutional lawyers and political scientists, from all over Europe and the United States, is to offer a new look at the form of government of the EU and the Eurozone and consider its potential for future development. While offering a plurality of perspectives on the form of government of the EU and the Eurozone, this book emphasises how the Euro-crisis represents a watershed in the process of European integration, makes the case for a more legitimate and effective form of government for the EU and the Eurozone, and identifies possible windows of opportunity for future treaty reforms. The volume will provide food for thought for scholars, policy-makers and the public at large as they continue debating the most apt form of government for the EU and the Eurozone.

Tragedy as a Travelling Form - - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Tragedy as a Travelling Form - - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Covering a broad historical spectrum from Greek Antiquity to the 21st century, this open access book asks how tragedy''s formal features have impacted its travels, and how these travels have shaped its forms. Bringing together an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars of classics, English, German and French literature, postcolonial literature, musicology and theatre and performance studies, it provides a multifaceted overview of form processes related to travelling. It presents tragedy as a dynamic figuration that emerges, stabilizes and transforms through relocation and adaptation. The collection begins with the tragedies of Antiquity and then investigates the 17th and 18th centuries, from Shakespeare to Voltaire, as a laboratory for the formal transformation of tragedy, inextricably linked to the social and political changes of that time. The volume concludes with travelling tragedies in the 20th and 21st centuries. This section focuses on two former colonies on the African continent (Nigeria and South Africa) as an exemplary field for exploring form travel in the postcolonial, globalized present, in which tragic forms have become transcultural and are circulating so fast that they can no longer be easily related to concepts of locality, nation or continent. Arguing that the strategies that made tragedy portable also expanded its formal potential, this book also discusses the migration of tragedy as a process of form itself. While adaptation studies frequently focuses on the political dimensions of transcultural modifications of tragic plots, this book suggests that formal concerns are also political and social matters. Science Fiction and Narrative Form - Professor David Roberts - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Science Fiction and Narrative Form - Professor David Roberts - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Establishing science fiction as its own distinct and increasingly important narrative form, this book explores how the genre challenges pervasive perceptions of society as they appear in the conventional modern novel. Inspired by, and building upon, Georg Lukács’s criticism of the orthodox novel for its depiction of life as alienating and disjointed, Milner, Murphy and Roberts demonstrate that science fiction steps beyond this contemporary form to be a more constructive form of literature, one able to conceive of society as complete, integrated and well-rounded. Taking stock of three kinds of science fiction which lie outside the scope of the modern novel – theological/ ontological science fiction, the science fiction of future history and epic science fiction – this book demonstrates the genre’s unique capacity to encapsulate the whole world, persons and events, things and objects in a glance, and address the motive behind the longing for meaningful totality. With reference to a vast array of works by authors such as Michel Houellebecq, Elias Canetti, Isaac Asimov, Jules Verne, H. G. Wells, Aldous Huxley, Marge Piercy, Iain M. Banks, Margaret Atwood, Ursula K. Le Guin, William Gibson, Dirk C. Fleck, Philip K. Dick, George Orwell and Kazuo Ishiguro, this book offers a compelling argument for rethinking the position and potential of the science fiction novel and to challenge the way we perceive our culture.

_________________ ''A harrowing - and, in this era of drones, absolutely pertinent - look at the rapacious reaches of man''s murderous imagination.'' - starred review, Kirkus ''A fascinating and chilling chronicle of weapons of mass destruction . . . Preston''s eloquent and objective history of war is immensely exciting.'' - Library Journal ''Well-detailed, shattering . . . This is Preston at the top of her analytical form, offering fascinating modern parables on war, mortality and civilization.'' - starred review, Publishers Weekly _________________ Poison gas, the torpedo, the zeppelin - Diana Preston offers a startling new window onto World War I with her chronicle of the birth of weapons of mass destruction. Between April 22 and May 31, 1915, Western civilization was shocked. World War I was already appalling in its brutality, but until then it had been fought on the battlefield and by rules long agreed by international convention. Suddenly, those rules were abandoned. On April 22, at Ypres, German canisters spewed poison gas over French and Canadian soldiers in their trenches; on May 7, the German submarine U-20, without warning, torpedoed the passenger liner Lusitania ; and on May 31, a German zeppelin began the first aerial bombardment of London. Each of these actions violated rules of war carefully agreed to at the Hague Conventions of 1898 and 1907 which were deliberately breached by the German authorities in an attempt to spread terror and force the Allies to surrender. While that failed, the psychological damage these attacks caused far outweighed the physical casualties.Celebrated historian Diana Preston links these events for the first time, revealing the dramatic stories behind them through the eyes of those who were there. Placing the attacks in the context of the centuries-old debate over what constitutes "just war" and "civilized warfare," Preston shows how subsequently the other combatants felt the necessity to develop and use similar weapons. Now, when such weapons of mass destruction are once again deployed and threatened, and terrorist atrocities abound in very different kinds of conflicts, the vivid story of their birth is of great relevance.

Foundations of Systematic Theology - Thomas G. Guarino - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Foundations of Systematic Theology - Thomas G. Guarino - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing PLC - Plusbog.dk

Guarino argues in this book that the doctrinal form of the Christian faith, in its essential characteristics, calls for certain theoretical exigencies. This is to say that the proportion and beauty of the form is not served or illuminated by simply any presuppositions. Rather, a determinate understanding of first philosophy, of the nature of truth, of hermeneutical theory, of the predication of language and mutual correlation is required if Christian faith and doctrine are to maintain a recognizable and suitably meditative form. Failing to adduce specific principles will lead either to a simple assertion of Christian truth, in which case the form of Christianity becomes less intelligible and attractive - or one will substitute a radically changed form, which is itself inappropriate for displaying the fundamental revelatory narrative of faith. The house of Christian faith possesses a certain proportion of structure; the form will sag badly if one removes an undergirding item, or if one beam is replaced with another of variable shape or size. The form's beauty will either be obscured, no longer clearly visible, or the form will become something quite different, no longer architectonically related to what was originally the case. The intention of this book is to discuss those doctrinal characteristics considered fundamental to the Christian faith, as protective of its revelatory form and, concomitantly, to examine the theoretical principles required if such form is to remain both intelligible and beautiful.
