This publication presents the results of a competition that was initiated by the Kolloquium Nordrhein-Westfalen to promote the artistic and creative use of steel as a material, and that was held in the department of metal design in the Design Faculty of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hildesheim. Diverse pieces of jewellery and small-scale sculptures were created as a result, which either make use of the brittle hardness of the material or else override these properties. They open up unusual insights into contemporary applied metal art, situated between artistic uniqueness and design-orientated craftsmanship. Jewellery and objects by four award winners are presented, as well as work by students and graduates. The presentation is enhanced with works by established artists, which complete the spectrum and the possibilities of designing with steel. Georg Dobler - Schmuck Jewellery 1980-2010 - Et Al. - Bog - Arnoldsche - Plusbog.dk

Since the beginning of his creative work in 1980, Georg Dobler, the jewellery artist and lecturer at the University of Applied Arts and Science in Hildesheim, has engaged in working with geometrical forms. Also in the mid 1980s, when he first drew on naturalistic elements, provoking an outcry in the jewellery world, his work was still bound by geometrical dimensions. It was exactly because naturalism was viewed as outmoded, however, that Dobler was viewed as a pioneer by the next generation of auteur jewellery designers. The artist complements his casts from nature (exotic plants and beetles) - Dobler sees himself as a collector of structures and forms - with large, facetted stones as an artistic addition. Yellow to orange-glowing lemon citrine and tender lilac amethysts combine with the metal surfaces to create a shimmering play of colours. Pure silver is seldom found in Dobler''s work; his trademark is rather black chromium or oxidized silver surfaces that shine in iridescent black.Georg Dobler is not only a pioneer, he also finds inspiration among the great artists of early modern art. Thus in the mid 1990s he drew on the abstract paintings of a Piet Mondrian, Wassily Kandinsky or Kazimir Malevich, who ignited his fantasy and inspired his compositions. Text in English & German.Exhibition in the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg, November/December 2010 and further venues in Pforzheim, Hanau, Bielefeld and Berlin in 2011.

Winfried Krueger - - Bog - Arnoldsche - Plusbog.dk

Winfried Krueger - - Bog - Arnoldsche - Plusbog.dk

Winfried Krüger (born 1944) belongs to that generation of jewellery artists who witnessed the birth of avant-garde jewellery in the 1960s. The skilled goldsmith liberated himself from precision, fineness and other virtues of his craft in order to allow free rein to his creativity. For Krüger jewellery is ever-present. From the tread of a shoe via the launch pad of a firework to the set of a science fiction film - he finds inspiration in all of these things. Translated into metal, extraordinary artworks are then created, which in the examination of ideas, form, materiality and surface show a modern, innovative understanding of jewellery, which he has imparted to his students over twenty years as lecturer at the technical college for design in Pforzheim.Despite this, Winfried Krüger has, as far as publishing his work is concerned, played hard to get. For the very first time this monograph presents the artist''s work in a comprehensive retrospective, whose focus rests on the work from the last twenty years.Winfried Krüger is represented in numerous prestigious museums and collections, including Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim (DE), Designmuseo, Helsinki (FI), Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg (DE), Stedelijk Museum''s-Hertogenbosch (NL), Musée des Beaux Arts de Montréal (CAN), Die Neue Sammlung - The International Design Museum Munich (DE), Galerie Marzee, Nijmegen (NL), Musée de design et d''arts appliqués contemporains, Lausanne (CH).Text in English and German.

Documents on Contemporary Crafts 1-5 - Norwegian Crafts - Bog - Arnoldsche - Plusbog.dk

Documents on Contemporary Crafts 1-5 - Norwegian Crafts - Bog - Arnoldsche - Plusbog.dk

Documents on Contemporary Crafts is a book series published by Norwegian Crafts in collaboration with Arnoldsche Art Publishers. The series provides a critical reflection of contemporary crafts in a wider context and in doing so asks questions about the ties between contemporary craft, fine art and design, thus helping to redefine the concept of crafts as such. The five volumes discuss such topics as skills, materiality, curating, collecting, perception and New Materialism. The more than thirty contributors range from leading craft theorists, such as Jorunn Veiteberg, Glenn Adamson and Liesbeth den Besten, via academics outside the craft tradition, such as Roger L. Kneebone, professor of surgical education, Trevor Marchand, professor of social anthropology, and Margaret Wasz, consultant psychological therapist, to emerging voices like Sarah R. Gilbert, Marianne Zamecznik and Stephen Knott. No. 1: Museum for Skills . Skills are essential to the crafts discourse. Yet in an art world that for the last 50 years has become increasingly focused on conceptual strategies, we have seen the tendencies of deskilling and outsourcing. In Museum for Skills , the contributors analyse the current situation for skills by drawing on experience from the fields of brain research, surgery and anthropology. No. 2: Materiality Matters . If materiality is a quality-related concept in both contemporary crafts and contemporary art, are we talking about the same notion? Or is there a fundamental difference between, on one hand, a maker''s confidence in his or her materials, and on the other, a contemporary artist''s use and adaption of a given material? No. 3: Crafting Exhibitions . Curatorial discourse has been an increasingly important aspect of contemporary art. The curator took on a new role as the ''author'' of the exhibition. Crafting Exhibitions introduces some of the processes that go into making an exhibition, from developing concepts to the physical realisation. The contributors offer different approaches to exhibitions. No. 4: On Collecting . Collections make up an important part of the contemporary arts and crafts infrastructure. Collectors and museums help improve the financial situation of artists. Additionally, to be included in the ''right'' collection or museum can give an artist a high level of recognition and preserves the art works for the future. On Collecting offers insights into collecting from different perspectives and sheds light on some of the structures that determine the ''collectability'' of works of art. No. 5: Material Perceptions . Contemporary craft objects can be perceived for instance, as works of art in ceramics, glass, textile, metal and wood, or as functional, handmade and everyday objects. Material Perceptions investigates contemporary crafts as representations of reality that do not rely on the concept of autonomy, unravelling the dualism between aesthetic objects and everyday things. Norwegian Crafts is a non-profit organisation founded by the Norwegian Association for Arts and Crafts in 2012. Norwegian Crafts initiates and produces exhibitions in collaboration with Norwegian and international institutions, curators and artists. The aim is to strengthen the position of contemporary craft from Norway internationally, contribute to the development of the artists'' careers and stimulate further exchange across national borders in the field of crafts.
