Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic is the third installment of the popular series of turn-based strategy games with RPG elements, launched in 1999 thanks to the Triumph Studios development team. The storyline once again takes us to the fantastic land of Evermore, where all magical life forms are repressed by the Phobian Empire - a rigorous theocratic state, created after the great war in an atmosphere of real threat from the terrifying monsters from the dark Shadow World. An opposition group of heroic wizards, inspired by the dethroned Merlin, decides to put an end to the bleak situation.
Three completely new nations have been introduced to the collection of twelve basic races (each of them equipped with a bonus city upgrade and one combat squad that has not been shown anywhere before) - wandering Nomads, sinister Shadow Demons and mysterious Syrons. In addition, the authors implemented several dozen additional spells, artifacts (there is an option to design your own items) and landscape types.
The extensive single-player campaign (five episodes and sixteen levels) is perfectly supported by a package of nineteen standalone scenarios and a random map generator (four creation modes) and a feature-rich editor (boards, portraits, etc.). The whole thing is complemented by an improved audio-visual setting (especially cutscenes, as well as background music tracks) and a modified user interface, making it easier for inexperienced people to start playing.
