RAGE 2 is a continuation of the post-apocalyptic FPS developed by the id Software team and released by Bethesda Softworks in 2011. In the case of the "two", most of the work was done by the Avalanche Studios team (known primarily thanks to the Just Cause series and the Mad Max game), and id Software mainly supervised it and sometimes suggested its own solutions. Bethesda Softworks remained the publisher.
Like the previous installment of the series, RAGE 2 takes us on a journey to a post-apocalyptic Earth ruined by an asteroid. The sequel begins 30 years after the events of the first part and continues them directly. The uprising against the Authority was a success, but the ominous dictatorship, pushed underground, in a few decades rebuilt its former power and is again preparing to conquer the entire wastelands under General Cross.
The player takes on the role of Walker (or Walker - you can choose the gender of the character), i.e. the last representative of the Guardians from Vineland, whose task is to protect free people from mutants, bandits and other threats. Using technology derived from Ark - capsules in which people specially trained to rebuild civilization after the apocalypse have been hibernated - the hero (ka) stands up to another fight with the Authority, trying to destroy it once and for all.
RAGE 2 puts at our disposal a vast open world, which consists of not only rocky canyons and sandy wilderness dotted with the remains of human civilization, but also, among others, jungle and swamp areas. As before, we move around the map mainly with armed vehicles, visiting, among others trade cities, bandit outposts, mutant lair, arenas or racing tracks, where a wide range of optional attractions awaits the player.
In fact, the exploration is just an addition to the mechanics of the first-person shooter, which is somewhat reminiscent of the Doom series - it is very dynamic, effective and bloody. In combat, we use several different types of weapons (including shotgun, rocket launcher, hypermunch, gravurer shooter; we carry all of them with us and gradually improve during the game), and they are complemented by gadgets - primarily the helicopter known from the first RAGE . wingstick) - and nanotrite powers. The latter allow the player to perform tricks such as a double jump, telekinetic thrust, creating a whirlwind that overpowers enemies or a dash.
The gradual improvement of the hero's skills and equipment plays an important role in the game. This is achieved by various points and resources obtained in the course of searching locations scattered around the open world. Thanks to this, we thoroughly expand the character's abilities, making it an unstoppable killing machine. Vehicles are also modified, although they are of secondary importance in the game in relation to the "pedestrian" shootings.
RAGE 2 features a single player mode only - it is not possible to complete the campaign in coop mode. However, a network component has been included in it, allowing, for example, to fight other players for places in online rankings in various competitions. In addition, the game was regularly updated after its premiere, receiving challenges that changed every week.
RAGE 2 is based on the Apex Engine technology that Avalanche used in its earlier projects, including the Just Cause games. This engine was chosen over id Tech (which powered the first RAGE) due to its ability to generate vast and detailed open worlds.
