Prior to the start of this campaign, a massive Yellow Turban rebellion had swept through China led by the Zhang brothers, who used Taoist divination to predict the fall of the Han dynasty. However, this initial rebellion was ruthlessly crushed and millions of civilians suspected of being sympathisers were slaughtered without mercy. As the campaign begins, the Zhang brothers are already dead, and only three significant enclaves of Yellow Turbans remain. Playing as one of these factions, you can change history, rekindling the movement and uniting China under a rightful, virtuous and just Emperor. YELLOW TURBAN FACTIONS The Yellow Turbans’ beliefs blend Taoism and shamanistic principles, and these spiritual aspects are a recurring theme throughout their faction gameplay. Many of their features relate to the three Taoist domains of Land, People and Heaven, or the Three Treasures (or virtues) of Taoism: Frugality, Compassion, and Humility. Reflecting these concepts, the playable Yellow Turban factions are led by the characters He Yi (People), Gong Du (Land) and Huang Shao (Heaven). Each has their own playstyle and unique bonuses. Yellow Turban factions construct a mix of adapted Han buildings and their own unique structures. Their technology tree is divided into three scrolls from the Book of Great Peace, each of which references the three Taoist domains and contains verses of Taoist scripture. It is structurally and mechanically very different from the default tech trees used by other factions. Playable Yellow Turban factions improve their Faction Rank as their campaigns progress. These represent the journey to enlightenment, the achievement of The Great Peace, regaining the Mandate of Heaven, and appointing a just Emperor. Progression requires the player to study the verses in the Book of Great Peace, construct religious building in their settlements and improve the virtuous characteristics of the characters under their control. CHARACTERS The Yellow Turbans have three playable heroes representing their factions. Each has their own playstyle, unique building chain and faction bonuses: * He Yi is a Yellow Turban commander from Yu province. Like the original founders of the Yellow Turban movement, he is a Healer, and empathises with the suffering of the common people. He is able to rally vast masses to the cause of the rebellion. Representing the domain of People, He Yi espouses Compassion. He fields veteran Yellow Turban warriors and strong berserkers in battle, and has access to the Healer’s Lodge unique building chain, a multifunctional building boosting population growth and replenishment and generating a small income from the sale of medicine. * Gong Du is a Veteran. Originally a bandit leader in the Changsha area, he aided Ou Xing in his rebellion against Sun Jian. He is a former military commander, and something of a charming brigand: well-liked and popular with the troops. He is dedicated to claiming the spoils from the tyrants he overthrows.

The Total War: THREE KINGDOMS – Mandate of Heaven Chapter Pack depicts the events of the Yellow Turban Rebellion, enabling players to engage in the conflict from either rebel or loyalist perspectives. Introducing a number of new characters and playable faction leaders, the campaign begins in 182CE, but players can choose to continue well into the Three Kingdoms period, with familiar characters entering the campaign as the timeline progresses. THE HAN DYNASTY As part of the free Total War: THREE KINGDOMS game update for all players which activates when Mandate of Heaven launches, Han Chinese factions may adopt the new Empire government style (Emperor Ling of course has this from the outset of the campaign). The Emperor and his allies are in an alliance where the Emperor holds total power. The Emperor has mandated powers to prevent his allies from voting on diplomatic deals such as war and peace. However, as this is effectively an abuse of power, such actions may cause schisms in the alliance… In Mandate of Heaven, Liu Hong (Emperor Ling) has a unique form of this Empire government style, in that he must request these mandated powers from his imperial allies in order to battle the Yellow Turban threat. In addition, he may also construct the Imperial Palace, a grand undertaking in both time and resources, which delivers powerful factionwide bonuses to the Emperor, and houses the single most powerful garrison in the game! Victory Conditions The victory conditions of all Han factions match those of the 190CE campaign. Timing in this period is crucial however, given the power-blocs in play. It’s very much about picking your moment to start your race for the throne and finding rebel-held commanderies to attack opportunistically. The only exception is Liu Hong (Emperor Ling), whose victory conditions will change depending on how he reforms his government. HAN FACTIONS LIU HONG (EMPEROR LING) Liu Hong is Emperor of the Han Empire, and presides over a swiftly deteriorating situation. Rebellions are rising and there is discontent amongst his own vassal warlords. His court is controlled by corrupt and self-serving eunuchs who are quick to silence any who question them. The formidable Empress, his wife, fights tooth-and-nail against the eunuchs’ power-grab, but her efforts are hindered by the Emperor's inaction. The vast Han vassal lands are Liu Hong’s to maintain, but the situation is rapidly falling apart, and controlling all of them may be impossible as discontent and open warfare erupt… Unique Faction Mechanic: The Imperial Court Within the Imperial Court, three factions vie for supremacy. * The Bureaucrats: Led by the eunuchs, their supporters seek to centralise power into the hands of the politicians. * The Warlords: Supporters of this group seek a decentralised government where each local leader controls their own lands, answering only to the emperor. * The Dynasts: This group seeks all power to come from the imperial family itself. NEW HOSPITALS Pebberley Reef Wigbert “Wiggy” Silverbottom has funded this hospital on the coast of Pebberley Island. Currently, we’re not exactly what you would term ‘official’. We’ll need to clean the place up a bit before the island’s medical authorities are willing to recognise this as a hospital and give us a medical license. Wiggy’s using the hospital to make good on all those times he’s offered someone a job without thinking it through; for some reason he thought it’d be a good idea for them to work as our janitorial staff. We won’t have access to a pool of highly trained medical janitors. Instead, we’ll be able to hire other, random, totally inexperienced people. We’ll need to get training, or maybe just hire loads of them, as Pebberley receives some of the most erratic and unique weather in the County. Overgrowth It’s hard to believe, but a community used to live at the heart of this jungle before it got angry with them and, you know, ‘over grew’. People who had lived here for millennia were forced to leave their home and live down the road a bit. The plants here are pretty judgemental, for vegetation, but might respond positively if you care for the people and restore balance to the area. When we arrived, we found incomprehensible word and number sequences written into the bark of some of the trees. Try as we may, we just couldn’t make any sense of “Cure 10 Patients”, you should probably take a look. Good luck and, remember, the trees are watching! Topless Mountain The incredible natural plateaus of this area are perfect building foundations. They’re just so flat. Much more suitable than those pointy Pointy mountains they have in the north. The ancient people certainly thought so, that’s why they did lots of building here back in the ancient times, with their ancient tools. The transport out here is a nightmare, as you can imagine, and tourists that make it this far tend to have gotten sick on their travels, so big groups (we’re calling them ‘waves’) of sickly sightseers will be turning up all at once. Whilst you’re treating them, Wiggy’s crew will be excavating the ruins. It might be worth keeping an eye on their progress: the more they find, and restore, the more boneheads we’ll get turning up at the hospital. The people of Pebberley Island have been suffering from some very unusual illnesses indeed. Perhaps we can help! Contains 34 new illnesses (10 of them full new visual illnesses), including some of the following: * Wanderust Prolonged feelings of sameness have led to dull, tedious pain and a craving for adventure. The sufferer's tendency to search for relief in highly precarious, unimaginative, activities mean that they pose a great risk to themselves and others until they experience some kind of payoff. * Blank look The sufferer's facial features have receded out of existence and must be coaxed back with subtle, hydraulic machinery. Since Dong Zhuo’s death, Lü Bu has flirted with a number of allegiances, swiftly falling in (and out) with the warlords he finds around him. Having found further opportunities by taking Cao Cao’s land while he was away avenging the death of his father, he now flees from Cao Cao and his allies, seeking further means to prove his battle prowess and defeat the supposed heroes of China. Meanwhile in the South, Sun Ce mourns his own father’s death, Sun Jian. Vowing to defend his legacy, he seeks expansion into the South, but can he keep his people safe and prove his worth beyond his father’s legacy? With the world in turmoil, it’s up to you to carve out a path for your hero, and lay waste to anyone that stands in your way. LÜ BU The legendary warrior Lü Bu may be fearsome in battle, but he is hasty when it comes to the intricacies of rule. At the start of his campaign players will find themselves locked in combat with Cao Cao’s main army. Fight your way out of Chen to survive and rally your forces for the next inevitable showdown. This is the only DLC in which Lü Bu and his faction become playable. Unique Faction Mechanics: * Momentum: Lü Bu’s faction centres around Lü Bu himself defeating enemies as faction leader. Defeating enemy characters grants momentum points which enable a variety of powerful actions and bonuses. * Greatest Warrior Panel: Lü Bu’s faction has access to the ‘Greatest Warriors’ panel, featuring legendary warriors from the Three Kingdoms period. Defeating these legendary warriors with Lü Bu unlocks various permanent bonuses for the faction. Unique Story Events: * Experience the historic conflict between Cao Cao and Lü Bu * Lü Bu’s shifting allegiances: will you join Liu Bei, and later betray him? Lü Bu’s fractured faction: Will your generals betray you? * When playing as Lü Bu you also have access to two new units; * Camp Crushers (two-handed sword infantry) * Flying Riders (armoured shock cavalry) SUN CE The military general Sun Ce is a vassal of Yuan Shu at the start of this campaign, as his father Sun Jian was before him. In Sun Ce’s campaign the player must grapple with decisions around the overlord; should Sun Ce stay loyal or should he rebel? With a desire to push South and conquer his homelands, Sun Ce has a fraught journey ahead of him. Unique Faction Mechanic: * Legacy Of Wu: Sun Ce has a list of ‘ambitions’ and completing these goals grants permanent bonuses to his faction. This includes tasks such as conquering lands in the south, gathering high-level characters into his court and getting vengeance for his father’s murder. * Reckless Luck: Sun Ce’s reckless behaviour lets him expand his kingdom with unmatched speed and ease. But the luck that keeps him alive can’t be sustained forever. If his luck runs out, Sun Ce dies. By completing his ambitions, his death can be delayed and, perhaps, avoided. Unique Story Events: * Guide Sun Ce’s unbridled ambition and reckless confidence into conquering the South. * Experience Sun Ce’s conflict with Yan Baihu and Yuan Shu. * Prove your worth, and Sun Jian’s old generals will flock to your faction.
